Instagram Makes Regular Shoes Look Ten Times More Awesome

$

So let's face it: #nofilter basically doesn't exist anymore. These days, featured users on Instagram are just killin' it in the hipster department. iPhone photography has been elevated to a whole new level, and the Instagram app is the perfect way to promote it. It's hard to believe that some of the pictures found on the app are authentic, especially with all the Photoshop hysteria that frequently surfaces in the fashion world.

If you're an avid Instagram user (er, stalker), you may have picked up on certain trends throughout your feed or on the popular page. This week, it was all about the footwear, but not limited to basic shoes. From rain boots to ice skates and Vans, we present the most hipster shoe shots of the week. Some of these photos make a pair of Keds look ten times cooler than they actually are...

And this week, our favorite stars made it easy by wearing so many adorable and affordable pieces. Olivia Munn looked effortless and comfortable in an $85 striped dress, while Taylor Swift's $20 Rosie the Riveter headband left us longing for another era.

Love is in the air!

Nina Agdal rocked a teeny bikini while vacationing in Barbados with her boyfriend, The Wanted's Max George, on Friday (Nov. 29). The 21-year-old model and the 25-year-old singer enjoyed some fun in the sun before jetting back home on Saturday.

While in Barbados the couple, who began dating in September, went spearfishing and relaxed on a yacht.

Agdal was previously linked to Adam Levine before "The Voice" coach proposed to fellow model, Behati Prinsloo.

Fashion Kills!

"I can afford a blemish on my character, but not on my clothes," says Shelby Carpenter, played by Vincent Price in Laura, Otto Preminger's 1944 film.

When actors are questioned about the process of getting into character they invariably cite that the right pair of shoes or gloves, a strict corset or a comfy cardigan will help them shape and inhabit their fictional persona far greater than any notes from the director. In Dressing Dangerously: Dysfunctional Fashion in Film, a new book by Jonathan Faiers, the author explores this knife-edge relationship between fashion and film, and documents the tiny sartorial details that can tailor the narrative as much as the script.

Faiers' own narrative covers and uncovers every area of the screen wardrobe. There is the iconic trench coat as worn by Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca and Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys, the symbolic red dress that brands Bette Davis a 'scarlet woman' in Jezebel, the 'wages of sin' fur coat coveted by Doris Day in That Touch of Mink and even accessories as weaponry - a high heel court shoe in Single White Female, a scarf in Dial M for Murder. Also featured is Cary Grant's torn tailcoat in Bringing Up Baby alongside the monogrammed bathrobe of Joan Crawford (played by Faye Dunaway) in Mommie Dearest that helps depict the actress as a self-obsessed monster. The soiled garments that feature in a chapter entitled Stubborn Stains focusing on the meaning and consequence of cinematic wardrobe malfunctions (Sissy Spacek's blood-stained prom dress in Carrie or Tippi Hedren's ink spotted blouse in Marnie) would no doubt need more than a cap or two of Vanish to shift.

Faiers presents his evidence, incriminating or otherwise, with flair; the author originally studied fashion design at St Martin's School of Art and is now a reader in Fashion Theory at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton. The book is a roll call of the criminally stylish, including David Niven in The Pink Panther, Sharon Stone in Casino, Richard Burton in Villain and Marlene Dietrich, who insisted on being costumed by Christian Dior for Alfred Hitchcock's Stage Fright.

Hitchcock in turn instructed costume designer Edith Head to purchase the wardrobe for Janet Leigh in Psycho for next to nothing from a local store - the same kind of clothes that her secretary character could afford. In an era where buzzwords such as 'realness' and 'authenticity' are king, this confirms how the right item of clothing can help convey a believable character even before the actor has opened his or her mouth.

Dressing Dangerously tells its own sorry story with Faiers displaying the forensic fastidiousness of a sartorial sleuth, sniffing around in the underbelly of the wardrobe. The same kind of meticulous study demonstrated by costume designers who closely examine historical and vintage clothing in an effort to identify and replicate the areas experiencing most wear and tear.

My favourite artefact at the V&A's Hollywood Costume exhibition (October 2012-January 2013) was the famous little tramp outfit worn by Charlie Chaplin. The pinched jacket and baggy trousers assembled by the actor himself perfectly captured the tragedy of the down and out loner. And although the black and grey costume was shrouded in the darkness of the gallery, a closer inspection of the trousers offered up ragged embroidery that resembled an appropriate shabbiness.

In this book the author is, quite literally, hanging out cinema's dirty washing, as in the case of Patrick Bateman (the vicious WASP serial killer portrayed in American Psycho with ultra-cool detachment by Christian Bale), who takes his blood stained Brooks Brother shirts to his neighbourhood Chinese laundry.

Faiers also asks us to reassess our own sartorial screw-ups - the things lurking at the back of the wardrobe.

In fashion I have long been a fan of damaged duds from the ripped and torn blazer belonging to Johnny Rotten to the mammoth moth hole knits designed by Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garcons, the felt penned graffiti on the aforementioned blazer or the spray canned brocades and sequins of Alexander McQueen's infamous Le Poupee collection in Spring/Summer 1997. For Spring/Summer 2000 Vivienne Westwood offered a collection titled Summertime that was a riotous mix of pretty cotton sun dressed marked with readymade red wine and grass stains indicating that the wearer might have a few good stories to tell should their memory allow.

While some of the language featured may linger in academia, the author happily admits that this book simply provided him the opportunity to sit and watch his favourite old films. The collection, both obscure and blockbuster, that Faiers has drawn together with such authority and obvious enthusiasm for the subject matter offers a tremendously comprehensive roster that will prove an essential and intriguing resource for any student of fashion, costume or indeed film lover.

And, if nothing else, Dressing Dangerously will make you think again when at the end of a particularly difficult day you moan that your shoes are murder.

Holly Ledbetter, Tisch Dance Major, Shares Her Time-Saving Styling Trick For Curly Hair

For women with curly hair, nailing down a hair care regimen that gets you out the door each morning in a flash takes trial and error. But Tisch dance major Holly Ledbetter reminded us that simplicity is key.

"I'm really low-key when it comes to beauty -- the biggest beauty thing I do is try to get sleep. I get ready in five minutes in the morning because I have to get up so early for class everyday," said Ledbetter. "I use TRESemme [shampoo] for curly hair and I don't put any product in afterwards. I just let it go wild!"

You're probably thinking that's easier said than done, especially coming from someone who lives mostly with her hair in a bun. But her thick and healthy curls are the only evidence we need to put down the blow dryer and flat iron.

Zappos Enlists André Leon Talley To Up Its Fashion Cred

$

Great news for Zappos shoppers: Your online destination just got a little more fashionable, thanks to André Leon Talley.

The former Vogue editor has been tapped by Zappos to be the artistic director of Zappos Couture, the luxury segment of the shopping site. According to Women's Wear Daily, Talley will oversee fashion shoots, videos and trend selection starting next year. As of now, you can pick up high-end brands like Armani, Balmain, Calvin Klein and Burberry on the site, but it seems Zappos has its eye on upping the ante when it comes to its high fashion offerings.

"We're really looking to become the destination in online luxury shopping," Jennifer Sidary, head of couture at Zappos Couture, told WWD. "For us, we still have a lot of brands we're looking to acquire for the site and we hope that with André's partnership it will help us develop relationships with these brands."

Zappos' not-so-secret agenda seems to be a good strategy for the site, as it's managed to master customer service and maintain a pretty laid-back reputation in the public eye, despite being acquired by e-commerce giant Amazon. It's even tapped into the social media market, and the company has worked closely with Pinterest to offer customers lists of the "most pinned" items.

The one area where it's still making a concerted effort? Its fashion cred. During the most recent New York Fashion Week, Zappos partnered with IMG Models for the #ZAPPOSRECHARGE Experience, wherein it collaborated with style world bigwigs like Betsey Johnson and Leandra Medine, aka The Man Repeller.

Luckily, Talley seems like just the man to make this high-fashion element an integral part of Zappos' DNA. He certainly has a lot of free time since leaving Vogue last year and taking up an editor-at-large position for Numéro Russia. There were those reports about Talley getting his own late night talk show, but it seems he's firmly planted in the fashion world for now.

And fortunately, Zappos' shoppers will reap the benefits. Tell us: Would you buy high-end goods on Zappos.com?

Gisele Bundchen Practices Yoga With Daughter Vivian And It Couldn't Be Cuter

A photo of Gisele Bundchen and her baby girl, Vivian, practicing yoga together gives adorable meaning to the phrase, "Like mother, like daughter."

Bundchen posted a candid photo of herself and 11-month-old Vivian Lake sitting side-by-side as the supermodel did some daytime yoga. In the photo, the 33-year-old can be seen with her arms stretched upward, head tilted back and eyes closed. The little girl is smiling wide as she reaches up to the sky, attempting to mimic her mama's pose.

"Thank you auntie Fafi for capturing this special moment," Bundchen wrote on Instagram Saturday (Nov. 30).

This isn't the first time the Brazilian beauty and her baby, born last year, have taken some time to stretch together. In October, the former Victoria's Secret stunner posted a shot of her morning meditation with Vivian right by her side.

10 Ways To Get Wine-Stained Lips Without Getting Wasted

Don't call us lushes, but there's a sultriness we love about wine-stained lips. The sexy tinge of color left behind after sipping on a few glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot can be utterly sexy. But if you're like us, we hate when the look starts to fade.

So we've rounded up ten lip stains -- from raspberry pink to red bordeaux -- that will help you to recreate that wine-stained look without getting wasted. Cheers!

Lip Stains

From top left, clockwise:

1. Physicians Formula Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Glossy Stain. Packaged in a tube with sexy lace, bow and high heel embellishments, this lip gloss and stain combo imparts intense color, a shiny finish that lasts for hours and an alluring scent. ($5, Ulta.com)

2. Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain. Made with non-drying and nourishing ingredients such as olive butter, avocado butter and beeswax, this lip stain goes on smooth to create a custom shade. Translation: You and your BFF could be wearing the same color, but have totally different lip looks. ($25, JaneIredale.com)

3. Bite Beauty Cashmere Lip Cream. The cream-to-powder matte finish is what initially sold us on this lip stain. But after we noticed that our highly-pigmented pout was still intact after a few cocktails, we had to stock up. ($24, Sephora.com)

4. L’Oréal Paris Colour Caresse Wet Shine Stain. Ladies, when we say that this is one of the BEST drugstore lip stains, we mean it. Between the easy-to-use brush applicator, rich color, lustrous shine and wallet-friendly price tag, it's a winner. ($10, Walgreens.com)

5. IT Cosmetics Vitality Flush Stain Stick Lip & Cheek Reviver. This lip and cheek stain is way more than just a double-duty beauty product that leaves behind a natural flush. It's made with hydrating ingredients like plum oil, jojoba and sheer butter, plus it contains vitamins A, C, E, acai and green tea, which are rich in anti-aging antioxidants. ($24, Ulta.com)

6. Pixi Lip Blush. We get nostalgic using this lip stain with its felt-tip brush -- it takes us back to our elementary school days. However, the translucent wash of color that it leaves behind without drying out our lips makes us feel and look like grown-ups. ($18, Target.com)

7. Benefit Cosmetics Liquid Benetint. This cult classic is the secret behind some of our sexiest stained-lip-and-cheek looks. When using Benetint, keep in mind that a little goes a long way. So keep a light hand when handling this bottle. ($30, Sephora.com)

8. Vincent Longo Lip & Cheek Gel Stain. To get the most color payoff from this gel stain, be sure to dab it on to moisturized lips. The results? A lit-from-within glow that will make your co-workers' heads turn. ($23, VincentLongo.com)

9. Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Vernis à Lèvres Glossy Stain. All we want for Christmas (well, maybe not all we want) is for our stockings to be filled with this luxe lip stain. The amazing range of shades makes it difficult to choose just one. So we'd take any of these long-lasting lip colors to dress up our holiday party outfit. ($34, Nordstrom.com)

10. Hourglass Aura Sheer Lip Stain. For those of you who want to ease your way into lip stains, this water-based formula from Hourglass dries down to a sheer color that you can build up to perfect your desired intensity. ($26, HourglassCosmetics.com)

For many of us,* the '90s didn't start until Britney Spears' debut album "...Baby One More Time" hit the shelves at Tower Records in 1999.

While that may be an exaggeration for some, Brit made quite the style impact during the last year of the decade, capturing the zeitgeist in some quintessential fashions. In honor of the singer's 32nd birthday today (Dec. 2), we're taking a look back at some of Britney's most awesomely '90s looks.

*We really loved Britney back in the day -- mainly because we wanted to wear all of these things, too.

Reese Witherspoon Cuts Hair Into Long Bob For Fresh New Look

Reese Witherspoon is the latest celebrity to get a fresh new 'do by going shorter this holiday season.

Witherspoon showed off her chic haircut this weekend when she stepped out Saturday, Nov. 30, in Santa Monica, Calif. The actress was photographed leaving a Whole Foods after grabbing some lettuce and almond nog, according to the photo agency that secured the snapshots. Her new bright blond style, which falls just above her collarbones, looked great paired with her green plaid button-down top.

This is the latest hair change-up for the 37-year-old, who went brunette back in March for her role in "The Good Lie." Her strands have been back to blond for some months now, and she still has her signature side bangs intact.

In November, Jennifer Aniston chopped six inches off her famous mane for a new look. Jennifer Lawrence also cropped her long locks in favor of a pixie cut last month and said she went short because her hair was "fried from being dyed too much."

Sure, you can drink juice to reap the benefits for your skin. But what putting it directly on your face?

Sound strange? It shouldn't. Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) masks have been known to smooth and brighten skin thanks to the natural acids found in fruits. Natural beauty expert Katey Denno stopped by our offices recently to show us just how to whip up an AHA mask using fresh apple, grape and lemon juices mixed with organic cane sugar.

This sweet concoction not only acts as an anti-aging agent by hydrating skin, but it also gently exfoliates and cleanses, leaving you with a more even, glowing complexion. Putting juice on your face doesn't sound like such a bizarre idea anymore, does it?

Watch the video above to see Katey demonstrate this easy, hydrating AHA mask. (And don't forget to check out her face mask made up of yogurt, honey and grapes.)

The Kardashian Family Christmas Card 2013 Is Sort Of Bizarre

$

Another holiday season, another Kardashian family Christmas card ... and 2013's is, well, over-the-top.

In the photo, shot by David LaChappelle, the ladies of the Kardashian-Jenner clan pose in a carnival-inspired room, which features neon lights, pop art, graffiti and mannequins. (Not to mention tabloids cover the already-trashed floor.) The picture presumably represents the media circus the family is constantly in.

All the women wear black as they take on their individual personas -- Kim rocks a revealing gown while Khloe and Kourtney pose with Mason and Penelope. Kris wears a leggy look and a head-piece as she sits next to Bruce Jenner, who's trapped in a glass tube labeled, "cashier." Kendall and Kylie look glamorous as they stand atop a mountain of magazines.

Noticeably absent from the holiday card are most of the Kardashian men, Rob Kardashian, Scott Disick, Lamar Odom and Kanye West, as well as Kimye's daughter, North West. (Although, there is a floating baby above Khloe's head.)

L4L Clothing: Knitwear Collection AW13/14

L4L Clothing wrap up the year with their definitive knitwear collection for AW13 and the bitter cold months we're predicted to have early part of 2014.

Taking from the concept that nobody likes the Christmas jumpers knitted for them by their nan, we turned that idea on its head by creating the most sort after designs and weaved them into our creative process not just for the trendsetters of this festive season but well into 2014.
2013-12-02-turntupknit22.jpg

'TURNT UP' Fairisle knitted jumper with arrow detail on arms and breast.

Monochrome, colour block print, vintage Versace and Leopard print have all been popular themes this season, so myself and the team at L4L based our knit collection on them all.

The monochrome design crept in late summer 2013 through to autumn, mainly taking the form of baseball and hockey jerseys (see our Black & White Collection) what better way to finished the season off by making this in knit form!
2013-12-02-turntupdouble.jpg

The only way is up! with the bold Black and White knitted TURNT UP top.

2013-12-02-mondrianedit.jpg

The Mondrian inspired COLOUR BLOCK knitted top is bold, bright and for the brave.

The block print used in many-a-fabrics throughout the SS13 season, was here winterized to create a richer fabric via the medium of fairisle. Thus producing our favoured Colour Block knit shown above.
2013-12-02-RAWKNITWHITE.jpg

The ever popular lepoard print comes to life in the RAW knitted ensemble.

As well as our Lego Medusa knit popularized by vintage Versace, we also assembled our limited piece, the RAW Leopard Brick jumper. The detail on the sleeve using real Lego plates to recreate Leopard spots makes for that detail to make this knitwear stand out from the rest. As we all know in fashion, its a jungle out there!

'Plus-Size' Model Leah Kelley: We Need More Size 8 Models

$
0
0
While the fashion world scrambles to find a place for so-called "plus-size" models, it seems the models themselves are the ones least caught up in all of the labels.

Leah Kelley, a successful "plus-size" model at a size 12, tells Elle.com in a new interview that she's "fine" with the label -- namely, because it's an imprecise designation in the first place. "I'm tall, so my size 12 is stretched out, but it is my size, it is considered plus-size and I have no qualms about that," she said. "I have naturally thin friends, and they’re people too; they're beautiful on their own."

Kelley further explains her stance, arguing that the industry should embrace all body types, not just the polarized categories of "plus-size" and "straight-size":

"People say that I don't look like what a plus size model should be, but the world isn't only size 14 anymore than the world is all a size 0. The fashion industry as a whole should showcase the variety of types of bodies, not just tiny or plus size. What about a size 8 model? There are so many people who are a size 8, and there are no size 8 models!"

We first spotted Kelley after pal Robyn Lawley tweeted a picture from an impromptu photo shoot, and we knew she'd be a name to watch out for in the modeling realm. Her sentiments echo a lot of the dialogue out there these days -- in fact, fellow plus-size model Crystal Renn has even championed that sample sizes be a size 8, rather than a size 0, so that designers have the freedom to cast more diverse women.

Fortunately, this struggle is becoming less of an uphill climb as agencies like Jag and IMG put all types of models, even those that fall in that gray area of sizing, in the same casting pool. Plus, with major department stores bringing in plus-size mannequins, it seems that there truly is a demand by women to see a broader array of body diversity when shopping for clothing.

But the most important thing to remember, according to Kelley, is to embrace your natural size and not get caught up in fitting into a category. "If they just put 'model' in the headline of a story about me, some people say I'm too fat; other people say I'm too skinny," she says. "We're all fine as we are." Amen.

Lupita Nyong'o Wears Winter White Like A Bawse (PHOTOS)

While wearing white after Labor Day is no longer taboo, it still takes some sartorial savvy to pull the look off.

Actress Lupita Nyong'o, our new favorite style star, was a shining example of winter white done right on Monday while attending the 23rd Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York City.

The "12 Years a Slave" star looked lovely in a crisp ivory Lanvin frock with cream hued grosgrain bow and pipping details. She completed the look with a pair of red silk-satin pumps, also by Lanvin.

Although a strapless dress isn't the best cold-weather silhouette (she could have added a fab bolero or shawl), Lupita still looked elegantly appropriate in the ensemble. And let's not forget to point out her perfectly painted pout. This lady seriously has the best lipstick game in Hollywood.

Here's a look at Lupita's winter white getup. What do you think?

Your Pillowcase Might Be Causing Your Breakouts

$
0
0
After a tiring day at work, we can hardly wait to climb into our beds. A speedy nighttime beauty routine helps us hit the sheets in under 10 minutes, but we've recently run into a skincare issue that has slowed us down.

Waking up the next morning with inexplicable breakouts is forcing us to give our satin pillowcases the side-eye. If we're being really good about washing our faces before bed, then these pillowcases must be to blame for our acne, right?

Pillowcases can house dirt and oil.

Like anything else that transfers dirt and oil to your skin, pillowcases can be the cause of acne mechanica, according to Dr. David E. Bank, director and founder of The Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery.

"Acne mechanica is any type of acne that is the result of material or objects touching your face. When your pillowcase isn't laundered or changed regularly, a build-up of dirt and oil from the environment as well as your skin and hair touching the pillow is transferred back to your skin. This can clog pores and cause blemishes."

It probably doesn't matter what material your pillowcase is made of, but rather what's lurking on it.

Although some articles say that satin can cause breakouts, Dr. Bank believes this is not necessarily true. He explains, "No matter what material your pillowcase is, if it is not changed regularly, then it can have more grime, dirt and sweat. If you have any thick products on your hair when you sleep, the oils from your hair sit on the surface of your pillowcase and that can transfer to your face. However, this can happen if your pillowcase is cotton, silk or satin."

Beyond the actual material that your pillowcase may be made from, Clark warns us that there are also harsh chemicals used during the manufacturing process in order to bleach or color pillowcases. This doesn't make for a heavenly slumber for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Not everyone's skin is equally impacted by their pillows.

"Not everyone is going to break out from a pillowcase," says Ellen Clark, the founder and president of Control Corrective Skincare Systems. "But if you're prone to breakouts, whether it's because of hormones, genetics or stress, [pillowcases] can exacerbate an already delicate situation and cause micro-irritation."

But you can take preventative steps.

So what steps should you take to lessen your chances of getting acne from pillowcases? Here are three:

  1. Wash your face every night. Seems obvious, but this will help to prevent dirt, grime or makeup from getting onto your bedding. Be sure to consult a dermatologist first for them to assess your skin and recommend the best cleansing treatment.

  2. Sleep on pillowcases made out of natural fabrics. These materials themselves breathe better and transfer less oil. Also, if you are using acne medications containing benzoyl peroxide or retinol, these products can deposit onto the pillowcase. So make sure your fabrics are white because the topical treatments will bleach them and interact with the fabric.

  3. Launder your pillowcases every two to three days. This ensures you're not lying on a pillowcase with several days' worth of oil soaked into it or pooled on the surface. Dr. Bank cautions that liquid fabric softener and dryer sheets leave behind a waxy residue that is highly pore clogging. Avoid using fabric softener on your pillowcases. Fragrance-free fabric softeners aren't any better -- in this case, it's the softening agents that are a problem for acne-prone skin.
