Admit It: We All Had Our 'Awkward Phases'

$
0
0
We've all had one. In fact, you'd be lying if you said you didn't.

We're talking about awkward phases. Those few months (or in our case, few years) when your haircut was awful and you had no idea how to get dressed. Maybe you convinced your mom to let you get bangs, or perhaps Justin Timberlake played a major role in your adolescence and you decided frosted tips were the way to go. Whatever made you so awkward back then, rest assured, you weren't alone.

We've all had style moments we wish we could block out (ours include pleated pants and a lot of velvet). But as the year comes to a close and we look back, we decided to reminisce on just how far we've come. We asked the editors here at HuffPost to submit photos of their awkward phases to compile a hilarious slideshow. Enjoy.

Think you were more awkward than us? Send us your photo to style@huffingtonpost.com.

Gillian Anderson Poses Topless For A Good Cause

Gillian Anderson, forever Scully, stuns in a new and revealing photo for the BLOOM & Fishlove campaign, which targets destructive fishing practices.

Anderson, 45, posed topless for the shoot with an eel strategically covering her chest.

The former "X-Files" star has been very active on Twitter, where she has nearly 80,000 followers, in broadcasting her various charities and causes -- Fishlove included.

"Amazing animals that live in the deep ocean are being systematically destroyed by massive fishing nets that catch or crush everything in their path," claims the petition that Anderson supports. "But in days, the European Parliament could vote to protect one of the world’s most precious deep-sea habitats - and we need to give them the public mandate to do it."

"On December 10th Members of the European Parliament can vote to ban the most destructive forms of deep-sea fishing in the Northeast Atlantic ... Let’s make sure they have what they need before this historical vote! If we come together right now to raise our voices - we can ensure one of the most wonderful ocean habitats in the world is protected. Sign the petition right now and share this with everyone."

Want Shiny Hair Like Naomie Harris? This Is What You Should Be Doing

Whether "Mandela" star Naomie Harris' hair is styled pin straight or loose and wavy, photographers always seem to capture the luminosity of the British actress' strands. But even we non-celebs realize that constant hairstyle changes can take a toll on the overall condition of one's hair.

So how does Harris maintain such healthy and shiny hair with all the style changes? We asked two of the ladies behind her most recent red carpet looks, Aveda Global Artistic Director for Textured Hair Tippi Shorter and Motions Celebrity Stylist Ursula Stephen, to share her secrets.

Keep scrolling down to find out!

naomie harris hair

Healthy hair starts with hydration.
There are many factors that can affect the hair (frequent styling, the environment and weather, etc.), so Stephen believes it is important to regularly condition. For girls with unprocessed, natural hair, she like the Motions Deep Conditioning Masque. "It's super hydrating and provides the nourishment needed during the winter months," says Stephen.

Shorter co-signs this hydration tip, adding how it's all in the preparation. "Naomie is very good about maintaining her hair health, which makes my job easier," she explains. "I use the Aveda Dry Remedy Shampoo and Conditioner and use the Smooth Infusion prep before blowdrying her hair. Before flat-ironing her hair, I use about four drops of the new Aveda Dry Remedy Moisturizing Oil (launching January 2014). Then I use abut two drops of the oil to finish her hair."

A great haircut and color really make a difference.
Harris has one of the most precise haircuts in Hollywood. Shorter recently cut her hair blunt throughout the ends, and it showcases extremely well whenever the actress wears her hair bone straight. Her trimmed ends also helps to prevent split ends and promote healthy hair growth.

Getting a clear hair gloss just before the winter and summer are always helpful to keep hair shiny and lush-looking, according to Shorter. The professional suggests using Aveda Blue Malva shampoo and conditioner to restore the rich tone to your hair.

Maintaining a nighttime hair routine ensures you wake up with gorgeous hair.
"Because Naomie doesn't wear a chemical straightener, she pulls her hair loosely into a low ponytail to preserve her blowout for two to three days," says Shorter. For women with naturally wavy or curly hair, she suggests doing the same, using a large scrunchie-type of band to hold the ponytail so the hair doesn't get marks. Using a few drops of moisturizing oil on your ends before bed will also keep your hair hydrated.

Versatility is key, but be sure to take the right precautions to avoid permanent hair damage.
One of our favorite hairstyles Harris has sported, besides her amazing blowouts, was the half-up, half-down braided 'do created by Stephen. The celeb stylist wanted to create something with a bohemian feel yet polished enough for the red carpet. She adds, "So I felt combining the two would be perfect -- you know, the best of both worlds."

However, Stephen says that you need to be careful not to overdo hair changes because your hair can only withstand so much, especially when heat styling. If you have natural hair like Harris, and you want to achieve something straight and sleek, try the Motions Straight Finish collection. "It's a three-step system that lets you easily and safely straighten your hair, without damaging the natural curl pattern. So, when you want to go back to loose curls… all you have to do is wash and go," she says.

Isn't she lovely?

Ten Tips to Fake a Slimmer Figure

$
0
0
While exercise and healthy eating are the best routes to getting the body you want, sometimes we could all do with a helping hand, especially when a special event is on the cards. To look and feel your best with minimal effort, check out these tips for faking a slimmer figure.

Wear some slimming underwear

To drop a dress size instantly, take a tip from the celebs and choose some slimming underwear. While they might not be the sexiest of items once your clothes come off, underneath your outfit they will miraculously smooth out lumps and bumps and pull in any wobbly bits, giving the illusion of a firmer, slimmer body.

Dress for your body shape

Wearing tight, ill-fitting clothes is one of the worst things you can do if you are hoping to look slim. Rather than trying to squeeze into items that don't suit your body shape, take some time to think about what suits your figure. Dresses that are nipped in at the waist and skim over the stomach and thighs can flatter curvier figures, for example, while those with larger legs may want to avoid calf-high boots. Learn what emphasises your best parts for an instantly slimming wardrobe.

Pay attention to posture

Improving your posture and standing straighter and taller is one of the easiest ways to look instantly slimmer. Improving your core stability and the flexibility of your spine through exercises such as yoga and Pilates can improve posture. Also, try to pay attention to the general position of your body as you sit or move around, trying to pull your shoulders back and avoid slouching as much as possible.

Banish bloating

It's possible to cheat your way to a slimmer frame prior to a special event with some careful eating. To prevent bloating, on the day of your big event limit your intake of high-fiber foods, such as certain fruit and veg, beans and grains, which are renowned for causing intestinal gas. Also avoid salt, carbonated drinks and chewing gum, all of which can cause bloating and prevent you looking your best. Try also taking charcoal capsules, which can help to eliminate gas which causes bloating.

Get a fake tan

Not only can fake tan make you look instantly slimmer all over, a bit of strategic bronzing can also easily enhance specific body parts and create the illusion of a better body. To create the appearance of slimmer legs, apply a bit of bronzer down the sides of your legs and some shimmer lotion down your shins.

Learn how to pose for photos

To make sure you look slim in all your photographs, try the classic celeb pose of turning your body three quarters of the way towards the camera, with one shoulder closer to the camera and one foot in front of the other. This will make you body appear slimmer than if you were facing the camera face on. Try keeping your back straight with your shoulders back and your stomach in (just try not to suck it in too much, you won't be fooling anyone!).

Wear heels

While it is inadvisable to wear heels on a day to day basis, if you want to look slimmer for a big night out, swapping flats for heels can make all the difference. Heels make your legs look longer and they also make legs appear more toned. For a more comfortable alternative, try opting for kitten heels or wedges. Also, avoid shoes with ankle straps which can make legs appear chunkier.

Have a last-minute workout

While a regular workout routine is the best route to a slimmer figure, if you want to fake a better body in a short amount of time, some last-minute toning can help. Emphasise any muscles that may be on show (or your stomach muscles for flatter abs) with some last-minute targeted exercises, such as sit-ups, lunges and bicep curls. The rush of blood to your muscles will temporarily tighten them to leave them looking more defined.

Accessorize your outfit

If you're feeling self-conscious about perceived problem areas, try to divert attention with detail. If you're paranoid about your arms, a shrug can help to cover them up while adding some colour and detail to your outfit, while an accessory such as a scarf, brooch or necklace can help to draw the eyes up towards the face rather than on areas of the body you may feel self-conscious about.

Try a body wrap treatment

While having a body wrap will not result in lasting weight loss, this treatment can help you to look slimmer short term before a big event. There are many different types of body wraps, including moisturising and detoxifying wraps, but slimming wraps - where the body is slathered in detoxifying ingredients and wrapped in cotton bandages - can help to reduce fluid retention, helping you to temporarily feel and look thinner.

Amanda Seyfried Has The Hair Of A Mythological Greek Goddess

If we could click our heels and get one beauty wish, it would probably be to get Amanda Seyfried's hair on our own heads. (Sounds creepy, but we're being dead serious.) It's luscious and shiny, thick but not frizzy and always bounces in just the right way.

Basically, this actress has the hair of a mythological Greek goddess. Today, on her 28th birthday, we're paying tribute.

It looks like THIS in the wind.

It makes the perfect, sleek ponytail.

And it cascades perfectly around her face.

It can be curly and carefree...

... or wear flowers that wouldn't dare fall out or fall apart.

It can attain that impossible state between wavy and straight that we only dream of.

Her waves are always perfectly in line.

When she turns her head, a single curly lock bounces.

And it sways in the wind like sheaves of golden wheat.

Her curly waves make Taylor Swift's hair look limp and lifeless.

It looks cute with mouse ears, duh.

And yeah, she knows it.

We love this chick:

Princess Diana's Favorite Dress You've Never Seen Goes Up For Auction (PHOTOS)

$

Most of Princess Diana's iconic dresses are as fresh in our minds now as when when she first wore them, from that black velvet gown to her famous "revenge" dress.

But Di had a floor-length, princess-y number in her arsenal that we somehow happened to miss: her "Diaghilev" gown designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, which went up for auction at the Kerry Taylor Auction House in London today. The late royal wore this white taffeta confection, inspired by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, to a number of events including a 1986 visit to the German Embassy, a performance at the Royal Opera House and the premiere of the James Bond film "The Living Daylights" in 1987.

"This dress was a real favorite of hers," Kerry Taylor told CNN. "It's the kind of dress that a little girl sitting down at school will draw when she's asked to draw a princess."

Indeed. The strapless gown, complete with gold sequins, crystals and pearl beading, seemed to be Diana's go-to "princess" dress. Luckily, the Emanuels designed the look with this in mind: The dress features removable sleeves and a matching headband, so Di could switch up the look as she pleased, adding a tiara or elbow-length gloves during different outings.

If you want to scoop up the dress, be prepared to part with quite a bit of cash, as it's expected to go for a whopping $130,000 at auction. Hey, at least you know you could get at least three wears out of the thing.

Another Reason To Be Jealous Of Lorde's Hair: She Can Go 6 Weeks Without Washing It

$

Some might think that Lorde's greatest achievement to date is landing a number one single at the age of 16 -- don't even try to tell us that "Royals" isn't stuck in your head at this very moment. But we think we've uncovered an even greater accomplishment on the part of the teen pop idol: jealousy-inducing, low-key hair maintenance.

That's right, Lorde's envious curls aren't the result of hours of styling or even washing. In fact, in a recent interview with Marie Claire, the 17-year-old admitted:

"I can go, like, six weeks without washing my hair."

And you thought you couldn't be more envious of Lorde's extraordinary mane. We do have a few follow-up questions, though: Does she use dry shampoo? What about a dab of baby powder in her roots? Or is life simply that unfair that we're slaves to our oily locks while Lorde does so little to maintain such an epic head of hair?

See the results of Lorde's low-maintenance routine:

Pamela Anderson said bye, bye to her famous long locks last month and now, it appears she's dyed her blond hair.

The 46-year-old bombshell debuted her brunette pixie cut as she made her way through LAX airport on Sunday night (Dec. 1), according to X17online.com. Although her hairstyle was hidden under a big gray hat, it was obvious that Anderson's platinum blond locks were replaced with a new brown 'do.

After running the New York City Marathon a few weeks ago, Anderson stopped by "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" to explain her changing looks.

"I just thought my hair had had a ‘life,’” she told DeGeneres of her decision to chop her hair off. “And I wanted to put that behind me and start fresh, and I thought it would be good for the marathon. And it was!”

10 Shopping Problems Only Tall Girls Have

$

We acknowledge that there are many perks of being tall. But with all the good, comes some bad, too. You try finding pants with a 40-inch inseam. You try finding cute high heels that aren't stilettos. You try finding a winter coat with sleeves that are long enough. What we're trying to say is, finding clothes that fit (and look good) can be very challenging for us tall girls.

So, to all the lengthy ladies out there, we totally get you. Here are ten shopping problems all tall girls face:

1. Your feet are too big to fit through the opening of skinny jeans.

2. Sales associates are constantly telling you, "Sorry, these shoes only go up to a size ten. But they fit really, really big." Lies. Straight lies.

Liz Lemon Eye Roll and Exhale 30 Rock Liz Lemon Eye Roll and Exhale

3. You exclusively buy elbow-length gloves, as normal gloves are too small to cover your hands.

4. You are constantly asking yourself, "Is this a dress or a top?"

5. You've come to embrace bracelet-length sleeves, because, let's be honest, that's the only option.

6. At the end of a shopping trip, your knees hurt from crouching to see your entire body in the mirror.

7. Buying nice-looking socks is a must as your ankles will inevitably be exposed in your too short pants.

8. You laugh when sales associates tell you that they hem pants for free. Like you'll ever need that.

9. One size fits all never fits you.

10. You almost always bypass the high heels and go straight for the flats. Hey, sometimes a girl doesn't feel like towering over her friends.

We bet these stars feel our pain:

3 Beauty Hacks To De-Stress Your Makeup Routine

$
0
0
Nothing throws us into a state of panic quite like a clumsy makeup mistake, like putting on mascara in a rush and ending up with scary smudge marks on our lids or getting too heavy-handed with powdered blush and looking red in the face.

Well, we can finally chill out. PopSugar Beauty editor Maria Del Russo comes to our rescue in the video above with three beauty hacks that de-stress our makeup routines. Here are the tricks we're committing to memory:

1. Spritz hairspray onto a spoolie brush before grooming your brows.
A little hairspray can go a long way when it comes to taming unruly brow hairs and helping the pigment from your eyebrow pencil or powder to adhere better.

2. Adhere broken lipstick pieces with a blowdryer.
Before you toss out your broken red lipstick, try heating up the fragmented pieces with a blowdryer. Use your fingers to seal the ends and place into the fridge (sans cap) overnight. In the morning, your lipstick should be good as new.

3. Keep unwanted glitter eyeshadow from sticking with translucent powder.
Brush on a thick layer of translucent powder before applying glitter eye makeup. Then use a fluffy brush to sweep away the stray flecks of shimmer where it shouldn't have landed.

More beauty tips you can use:

So our colleagues over at HuffPost Live, Caitlyn Becker and Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani, decided to delve deeper into rosewater's benefits. Aside from using it as toner on your face, they discovered that you can dab it on your eyelids to reduce puffiness in lieu of using cucumber slices. But the most surprising tidbit we found out? Rosewater supposedly helps with bladder infections.

Yes, really. Watch the video above to find out all of the crafty uses for rosewater.

It's only fitting that someone who coined the word "smize" is the owner of one very epic face. Tyra Banks is gorgeous, but it's the less-than-attractive faces she makes that really make us love her. Forget smiling and frowning and the occasional duck face -- Tyra can twist her mug into expressions we didn't know humans were capable of.

She's got so many ridiculously absurd faces, in fact, there are blogs devoted to documenting them.

And alllll that crazy is why we love her. In honor of our favorite "Top Model" and her 40th birthday today (Dec. 4), here are our favorite Tyra faces.

And sometimes, she just looks pretty normal:

Julianne Hough sported a completely fresh and brand new look yesterday (Dec. 3) at a viewing party for Beyonce's Mrs. Carter World Tour hosted by Boohoo.com. The blonde beauty, who just recently had a chic, wavy bob, now has long hair (extensions, possibly?) and soft bangs.

Though the actress posted a photo of the major change to her Instagram, she didn't explain whether this is for a role ... or just out of need for change.

These miniature creations are truly works of art, as Peleg pays attention to the most intricate details. Even the color of the lower lashes is factored in.

Joan Smalls Gets Glam For Elle's First Cover Of 2014 And Talks Fashion Diversity (PHOTOS)

Elle is ringing in the New Year with Joan Smalls!

The glossy has deemed the 25-year-old beauty "the future of fashion," and we couldn't agree more. While magazine covers are increasingly reserved for Hollywood starlets, Elle has bucked that trend for its January 2014 issue in favor of featuring the world's #1 model -- and a black one at that!

SCROLL DOWN FOR PHOTOS

This is definitely a big win in terms of diversity, considering the fashion industry has been struggling with a major race problem -- an issue that Joan has faced despite her success.

“People hide behind the word aesthetic. They say, ‘Well, it’s just that designer’s aesthetic.’ But when you see 18 seasons in a row and not one single model outside a certain skin color…? There are people in the industry who are advocates, who support diversity. And there are people who do not. I don’t get it," Joan told Elle. "Beauty is universal. These doors have to open.”

While Elle's French counterpart is dealing with some Blackface backlash, the American edition of the magazine has been making some major moves when it comes to diversity lately. Aside from ringing in the New Year with Joan, Elle was the first major fashion glossy to feature Kerry Washington on the cover.

This marks Joan's first cover for Elle, but we're sure it won't be her last.

During a celebration for the January cover on Tuesday night, editor-in-chief Robbie Myers said, “Joan is an Elle girl in every way -- she’s smart, charming, fit and totally in charge of what’s going on in her own life.”

Head on over to Elle.com for the full story and you can pick up the issue when it hits newsstands on December 17.
