10 Things You Do That Make You Look 10 Years Older

$
0
0
There are lots of expensive treatments and remedies for those who want to lock horns with the aging process and do battle. We think there is an easier way. Here's our list of 10 things that you may be doing that make you look older -- so just avoid them.

1) Wear elastic waist pants.
If you need an elastic waist for comfort, it's probably time to face the music that you likely need to shed a few pounds. Elastic waists are what our grandmas wore. With few exceptions -- we're thinking Hue skinny jeggings here under a big sweater and worn with boots -- elastic waist pants are for oldsters.

2) Use drugstore reading glasses.
There is no shame in admitting you need to wear reading glasses, but do look beyond the Dollar Store. Think of your reading glasses as a fashion accessory, not something that serves as a headband when you look up from the computer to converse. Spend a few bucks and get some stylish frames.

3) Wear wire-rimmed sunglasses.
We hate to be the ones to break this news to you, but John Lennon is dead. When it comes to sunglasses, we say "go big or go home." Big sunglasses also do a wonderful job of covering any crow's feet lines and will make sure you don't get more of them from squinting in the sun.

4) Use eyeglass ropes.
We may all need to wear reading glasses, but why advertise the fact that you also misplace yours so often that you need to tie them to your body? They are not fashionable. They scream "old biddy." Librarians may beg to disagree.

5) Don animal prints only if you mean it.
Animal prints are tricky business. On the right body, they ooze sex appeal; and on the wrong body, they draw double glances and snickers. We prefer to err on the side of caution and leave the leopard and cheetah skins to our pre-teen daughters, unless we are in Las Vegas, where anything short of dressing like Elvis works for us.

6) Own "travel" clothing.
The problem with travel clothing is that it's intended for people who fear wrinkles. The wrinkles they fear happen to be on their clothing, but that's not the point. Travel clothing looks like travel clothing. There are worse things in life than wrinkles. And they are travel clothes.

7) Travel with hard-cover books.
Yeah, we love the printed word as much as the next person. But lugging 10 pounds of books on the plane with you instead of downloading them on a reader just dates you. Electronic readers are easy to use and actually better than a book because you can discreetly adjust the size of the type and don't need to use a boarding pass as a bookmark.

8) Wear a Speedo.
Unless you are Diana Nyad and need to swim with sharks from Cuba, chances are you can find a swimsuit more flattering to your figure. For one, Speedos and any other suit with a shelf bra built in, are meant for women without actual breasts. Speedos are for people who want to swim laps, not lounge poolside with a margarita in their hand. Younger women have figured this out; some older ones, not yet. And older men in Speedos? Don't get us started.

9) Wear comfort shoes.
Oh yes, we feel your pain. Foot pain is what drives otherwise rational American women to wear their Reeboks in Paris. As we age, our feet expand, develop bunions, we get Plantar Fasciitis and a host of other painful foot problems. But old-fart footwear is a dead giveaway to age. Nobody is saying you must torture yourself in a pair of stiletto heels, but more and more brands are offering stylish shoes that are comfortable.

10) Act like a Luddite.
Technology is here to stay, folks, and if you truly don't know how to use it to improve your life, then you are missing out on a lot. Take a course, ask a kid, but move out of the Dark Ages. Truth is, we don't really think you are as much a true Luddite as someone who just thinks it's amusing to pretend you are. (We see you on Facebook, buddy.) But nothing makes you appear "old" the way it does when you say you don't know how to use your smartphone. The TV remote? Now, that's complicated.

Lupita Nyong'o is popping up everywhere -- and we love it! After wowing us on one of W magazine's amazing "Movie Issue" covers, the "12 Years A Slave" star has now landed a major fashion campaign.

SCROLL DOWN FOR PHOTOS

Miu Miu has tapped the Kenyan beauty along with actresses Elle Fanning, Elizabeth Olsen and Bella Heathcote for its Spring 2014 campaign. The four gals look amazing in the images shot by Inez & Vinoodh, while all dolled up in the Italian fashion brand's signature quirky, bold threads.

"The actresses' poses, full of personality, convey their diverse points of view, effortlessly translating the new spirit of the Miu Miu woman," the brand stated.

Agreed. And we're just psyched that Lupita's "it" girl magic is not being overlooked.

But the Golden Globe-nominated actress isn't letting her style star status go to her head. "Being considered a fashion star is wonderful," she told USA Today. "It's definitely a bonus thing. It was in no way my agenda when I started."

Well get used to it, sista!

Here's a look at Lupita and the other stunning starlets striking a pose for Miu Miu!

Hitting the Slopes in Style!

I don't know about you but for me skiing is as much about the outfit as it is about the snow! When I'm gliding down the mountain I want to look good doing so and when I stop for a Vin Chaud I want to look the part!

Long gone are the baggy ski pants and bright coloured snow jackets, it's all about the fit and style. If you can add a touch of faux fur or sheepskin then more points scored!

My current skiwear consists of a pair or Sweaty Betty Black ski pants and a Black fur trimmed jacket that I picked up in Mallorca of all places or a GEOX Taupe fur trimmed, belted jacket. They have gold zip detailing which adds a touch of opulence.

When I'm "apres skiing" I team my outfit with a pair of black Long-haired Goat skin fur boots! Super comfy and extremely warm - Yetty style!

2014-01-10-Boots.jpg

I always ski with a helmet and of course I have added a faux fur trim to this! If you don't have a trim for yours wearing your ski goggles around the helmet makes it look better and less "crazy Frog" like!

This year I have been looking for a new pair of pants. My advice for buying skiwear would be to stick to classic styles and treat yourself to a Moncler jacket. These jackets are truly timeless pieces that you will have for years to come.

2014-01-10-Monclerjacket.jpg

Another piece I love is this jacket by M. Miller. Similar to my Geox, the raccoon collar is removable and the belt detail will really show off your figure for a sophisticated look.

Below are some more pieces I love to give you some ideas. Enjoy the slopes this year, look good but most of all be safe!

Take A Fashion Lesson From The Stars Who Managed To Make This Week's Best Dressed List

$

This week's best-dressed list was filled with stars who managed to make simple black dresses extra special. Melonie Diaz shone in a LBD with an interesting neckline, while Queen Latifah chose the perfect silhouette for her body type.

Though many celebs hit it out of the park this week, the gold star belongs to English singer Paloma Faith, who managed to make a spring color palette work in the dead of winter.

Check out our picks for best-dressed and let us know what you think.

Melonie Diaz in Cushnie et Ochs

diaz

Now this is a LBD. The interesting straps combined with her deep red lipstick and slicked-back hair are making this a fashion moment to remember.

Naomie Harris in Michael Kors

naomie harris

This ensemble is perfection. Though many shy away from cardigans, this particular one looks modern when paired with a printed high-waisted midi skirt.

Sandra Bullock in Alex Perry

sandra

Orange and pink are great colors for a brunette. The illusion neckline with lace detailing is very pretty, and her nude pumps make her look long and lean.

Paloma Faith in Burberry

paloma faith

Pastels are going to be huge for spring, but it's so nice to see them in the middle of winter. The English singer looks very ladylike in her pink lace dress, which is nicely contrasted by her oversized winter coat. Her metallic heels make the look edgy, while her wavy strands and bold brows are an added bonus.

Lea Seydoux in Prada and Miu Miu

lea

There is a lot going on in this outfit, but somehow it works. The French model stuck to a similar color palette for her entire look, so all the embellishments and prints don't clash. She was also smart not to overdo her makeup or accessories.

Kate Beckinsale

kate

The actress showed off her best assets (those toned arms) in this halter style dress. A+, Beckinsale.

Lupita Nyong'o in Elie Saab

lupita

The detail work on this dress is really magnificent. The gold color pops against her skin tone, and her matching shoes don't detract from the breathtaking ensemble.

Nina Dobrev in Jenny Packham

nina

It's not often that you see a turtleneck on the red carpet, but they can be so incredibly sexy. Though the look is very covered up, the tight fit of the dress ensures that there is still some sex appeal.

Jennifer Hudson in Kaufmanfranco

jennifer

How is she possibly going to top this ensemble? This wrap-style dress is extremely flattering, and she picked all the right accessories to enhance her outfit -- her strappy shoes elongate her legs, the chunky watch toughens up the look and the bright pink lipstick adds a nice pop of color.

Queen Latifah in Angela Dean

queen

It's so nice to see Queen Latifah dressed up -- the woman cleans up well. The drapey top half of her dress is balanced out nicely by the tight skirt.

Celebrities Made Really Bad Wardrobe Choices On This Week's Worst Dressed List

$

On this week's worst-dressed list, many stars picked dresses that were all wrong for them. Allison Williams struggled to make a light blue dress sophisticated enough for the red carpet, while Jessica Chastain could have benefited from spending a little more time picking the right shade of yellow for her skin tone.

Though many celebs messed up this week, the worst look belongs to "Big Bang Theory" star Melissa Rauch, who wore an unflattering hot pink gown to the People's Choice Awards.

Check out our picks for worst-dressed of the week and let us know if you agree.

Cate Blanchett

cate blanchett

With a few minor tweaks, this dress could have been a home run. The silver frock paired with the matching jacket is a little much; we wish Blanchett had opted for a topper in a different color or texture. Red shoes would have also been nice to bring out the bold lining on the inside of her dress.

Jessica Chastain

jessica

The color of Chastain's dress is simply unflattering. It's too bright and isn't quite the right shade of yellow for her milky complexion. Plus, the shape and the fit of the dress aren't helping matters.

Kristen Wiig

wiig

Wiig is usually someone we look to for fashion inspiration, but not this week. The comedian chose a dress that was too busy -- between the loud pattern, sheer sleeves and T-strap shoes, we weren't sure where to look first.

Lindsay Lohan

lindsay lohan

This fashion-forward dress is pretty spectacular, but Lohan just fades into the background. The short hemline begs for lower heels, as the ones she's wearing are far too sexy. A pair of tights could have also worked to break up all the exposed leg (and maybe keep her warm).

Allison Williams

williams

Williams' pale blue dress is pretty, but the floral appliqués and silhouette aren't quite right for the "Girls" actress. This sweet frock would have been much better on a younger star.

Lea Seydoux

lea seydoux

It's nice to see color on the red carpet, but not when it looks like this. The hunter green, orange and lavender clash (in a bad way), while her silk top, bedazzled skirt and suede shoes just make for an even more confusing look.

Marisa Tomei

marisa

We're all about the pajama trend, but when wearing the fad on the red carpet, you need to be extra careful. A statement necklace, bolder lip color and styled hairdo would have made it clear that Tomei didn't just roll out of bed.

Ashley Roberts

ashley

This is way too much cleavage for the red carpet, it's distracting for an otherwise pretty dress.

Heidi Klum

heidi

This is another case of too much skin on the red carpet -- a plunging neckline like this doesn't work on women with bigger breasts. Also the shoulder detail is a little bizarre and competes with the sparkle and print on her gown.

Melissa Rauch

melissa

It looks like "The Big Bang Theory" star wrapped pink bed sheets around herself. Her gown skews '90s prom and that head-to-toe color is blinding.

Cat Battle Armour Makes Cats Extra Evil

$
0
0
Let the catiatorial games begin!

Or just let your cat terrorize visitors while wearing this diabolical onesie from a medieval-minded Etsy user named "schnabuble".

Sure, this $500 suit of battle armour won't transform her into Battlecat overnight, but it's prickly enough to discourage the claws of the rough-and-tumble cat kingdom.

Check out this handsome brute:

The listing for this catsuit is almost as entertaining as the thought of a leather-bound feline pouncing on your friends' faces:

"Your cat will become an unstoppable force for slaughter in this fully articulated suit, shielding him/her from foes while allowing unimpeded movement across the battlefield or living room floor. The imposing torso section features several riveted, articulated plates and a terrifying rack of dorsal spines. Your cat's hindquarters are sheathed beneath exquisitely arrayed overlapping scales stitched to a soft leather backing, adorned with nickel silver dome rivets. Midnight black scales and plates are finished with a glossy protective coat and seamlessly join together like the petals of a deadly flower."

And even if your cat doesn't normally wreak violence on others, it sure will cut a sleek figure in your window -- a warning to those who would trespass on your domain.

And a reminder that, yes, even cats can get more evil.

Erykah Badu is taking us back...way back...back into time!

On Thursday, the eccentric songstress debuted a hairstyle that we haven't seen since the late 80's/early 90's -- a super tall high top fade. Badu tweeted and Facebooked the 'do, which was sculpted by celebrity hairstylist Chuck Amos.

Can't say we're shocked by Erykah's retro look, it's been awhile since her signature sky-high headwrap gave way to a wide variety of wild manes. She definitely likes to keep her look, er, interesting.

Check out a few of her most eye-catching looks from over the past few years in the photos below.

You may not be able to judge a book by its cover, but we certainly judged these London apartments by their incredible exterior. From floor-to-ceiling windows to the subtle chevron motif used throughout, Squire and Partners' Hanover Street is the opposite of boring, characterless apartment complexes that often dot urban landscapes.

Take a look at the slideshow below to see what we mean.

What We Missed About The Nancy Kerrigan-Tonya Harding Scandal 20 Years Ago

$
0
0
When I was a little girl, I adored figure skating. The flawless sparkly outfits, the graceful artistry and athletic technicality of the movements, and most of all, the skaters themselves -- specifically, Nancy Kerrigan.

She was the perfect ice princess with her Vera Wang-designed costumes and her long, ballerina limbs, and she made every double axel and triple lutz she landed look easy. (Plus she had beautiful brown hair and her name was the same as my mother's, which to a girl under the age of 10 -- who also had brown hair -- made all the difference.) She was the symbol of a Cinderella comeback story. In 1994, just weeks before the winter Olympics, Kerrigan was attacked by an unknown assailant who would later be identified as a hitman hired by fellow skater Tonya Harding's husband Jeff Gillooly, and bodyguard Shawn Eckardt. Kerrigan recovered and won the silver medal.

I was not alone in my early-'90s love for Kerrigan. Even before January 6th, 1994, the figure skater's star was quickly rising. After she won a bronze medal at the 1992 Olympics, Kerrigan signed corporate sponsorship deals with companies like Campbell's Soup, Evian, Xerox and Reebok. Her classically feminine image easily secured her a spot as "darling of the U.S. skating community," as journalist Christine Brennan called her in a Jan. 1994 piece for The Washington Post. During the media spectacle that ensued after Kerrigan's attack -- who can forget the iconic video of her crying out "Why?" -- my 7-year-old mind picked up on the media's most basic narrative and took it at face value. Kerrigan was good, Harding was bad. The end.

2014-01-10-kerrigan.jpg
Tonya Harding at the 1992 Olympics, Nancy Kerrigan at the 1994 Olympics.

I never thought to question that story until this week, the 20th anniversary of the attack, when I saw Nanette Bernstein's documentary "The Price Of Gold," part of ESPN's 30 for 30 series. Of course, the basic facts of the story remain the same. It seems likely, though it was never proven, that Harding had some sort of knowledge about the attack, and no amount of mitigating circumstances ever excuses violence. However, the film (and Sarah Marshall's fabulous essay in The Believer) paint a picture in which Harding is a far more sympathetic character than the mainstream media would have had us believe. It turns out that frizzy blonde-haired Harding, child of a broken home, who grew up in poverty making her own skating costumes was the skating world's perfect villain.

"The way things were painted was this very black-and-white thing," Burnstein told the audience at the Jan. 9 New York premiere of "The Price Of Gold." "[It was] the evil witch vs. the snow queen."

The Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan story played out like a Lifetime movie, and members of both the print and broadcast media ate it up like tabloid candy. It had a catfight element that we love so much, and a class-war theme (even though Kerrigan also came from a working-class family): "The Reigning Ice Princess Taken Down By The White-Trash Wannabe." Connie Chung, who was dispatched to the Olympics on behalf of CBS to cover the story, told the audience at the ESPN film screening that, in her opinion, this story set the pendulum of the news industry swinging in the wrong direction. "The feeding frenzy began to take hold," she said. "It became entertainment. CBS was salivating over this Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan story."

Marshall describes the media's image of Harding thusly and the reluctance of anyone to really question the dominant narrative of Harding's guilt:

She was trash: trash cheats. Trash wants reward without working. Trash is dangerous. Trash doesn't care about other people's dreams. Why question a story that made such easy sense, and provided so much to laugh at along the way?

But quite a few things were lost when we branded Harding as trash and threw her out with it. (She was banned by the U.S. Figure Skating Association for life after she pled guilty to hindering the prosecution in their investigation of the attack against Kerrigan.) Although I remember plenty of discussions about Harding and her bodyguard, I barely remembered hearing about her (by most accounts abusive) husband Jeff -- the one to implicate Harding in planning the attack in the first place, and the one whose version of events was widely-accepted by the American public. We also missed out on a critical examination of the ways in which certain odds were truly stacked against Harding due to her socioeconomic position, her looks and the powerful and athletic nature of her skating.

What I find most fascinating reflecting on the story two decades later -- and the way that my young-girl-self consumed it -- is the way that I so easily absorbed the skating world's definition of being a good woman. From age 7 I knew that I, too, should aim to be graceful, demure, well-dressed, upwardly-mobile, beautiful and feminine; all of the things that the media and the U.S. Skating Association wanted Kerrigan to embody. (Though, even she briefly fell from grace after griping about Oksana Baiul -- proof that no one is shielded from the wrath of the skating world.)

I will always be a Nancy Kerrigan fan, but 20 years later, I can appreciate Harding's talent as well, and I can look at the media frenzy that surrounded these two women with a newly-critical eye.

Harding now lives with her husband and young son in central Oregon. You can hear the deep hurt and bitterness in her voice as she talks to Burstein in "The Price Of Gold" about the fallout she experienced from the scandal and the perceived injustices she experienced. Kerrigan will be a figure-skating analyst for NBC during the 2014 Olympics.

"In all likelihood [Harding] was involved and she obviously has created her own fiction," said Burstein at her film's premiere. "But to never be accepted for who you are in a sport because you couldn't grow out your bangs? I did have empathy for her." Guilty or not, Harding has probably been punished enough.

Even 'Plus-Size' Models Are Smaller Than Their Target Demographic

$
0
0
It's hard to believe that the very women who are meant to empower plus-size ladies by showcasing body diversity might just be posing yet another impossible standard. But it seems even plus-size models are alienating their target demographic.

Alex LaRosa, a self-proclaimed "plus-size model who's visibly plus-size," stopped by HuffPost Live on Friday to talk about the impossible standards that plague her sector of modeling just as much as the size zero benchmark plagues the straight size industry. She explained:

"In a world where you're telling women that plus-size is sizes 4 and up, you're causing body image issues. You're causing unrealistic expectations that every one -- every woman -- should be a size 4. To bring that into the plus-size community, where you're using sizes 8, 10 and 12, when sometimes the stores don't even start carrying the clothes until size 14, you're telling women, 'You want to look like these models. This is what you should look like, but it's never going to happen.'"

LaRosa herself has seen firsthand how critical people can be when she was the subject of a poll for PLUS Model Magazine last week. Two photos of LaRosa, one featuring her in a tight dress and another where she hides her curves, were placed side by side. Then Facebook users were asked to choose which photo they preferred. Surprisingly, votes were split 50/50 -- an indication that perhaps the standards in the plus-size community are going the way of the skinny-obsessed straight size world.

Watch LaRosa along with PLUS Model Magazine editor Madeline Jones and fellow model Tess Munster discuss the hot button issue in the clip above.

Amelia Earhart Was Just As Stylish As She Was Courageous

We all know the tale of Amelia Earhart: Female pilot overcomes odds and flies solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

But did you know she was stylish to boot? The pioneer perfectly embodied the styles of the 1920s and 1930s, rocking one of the best scarf collections we've ever seen (a perk of the job, we assume). When she wasn't flying, Earhart could be seen in the luxurious fur coats and drop-waist dresses of the era -- further proof that women can be equal parts brave and fashion-forward.

In celebration of Amelia Earhart Day today (Jan. 11), we're taking a look back at some photos that prove Ms. Earhart was one courageous, glam woman.

Hollywood's best and brightest gathered in Beverly Hills, Calif. on Sunday night (Jan. 12) for the 71st annual Golden Globe Awards.

Broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the awards celebrate the year's brightest stars in television and film. "SNL" alums Tina Fey and Amy Poehler host the show once again this year, and we're betting they will not disappoint. The awards show manages to separate itself from the rest with its reputation as a booze-fueled evening of unbridled frivolity, making it a viewer and celebrity favorite alike.

Lupita Nyong'o Golden Globes Dress 2014, Actress Looks Ravishing In Red Ralph Lauren (PHOTOS)

You'd never believe that it's Lupita Nyong'o's first time on the Golden Globes red carpet, because the Hollywood newbie just shut it down!

The "12 Years A Slave" actress, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress, looks ridiculously glamorous in a bold red gown by Ralph Lauren, complete with Fred Leighton jewels and red pointy-toed pumps. The off-the-shoulder creation boasts a cape design that's very reminiscent of Gwyneth Paltrow's famous 2012 Oscars dress by Calvin Klein.

We're a bit surprised Lupita didn't go for a Miu Miu (or Prada) frock since the 30-year-old stunner is now one of the faces of the Italian fashion house. But no matter what she wears, this gal knows how to shine.

As far as beauty notes, Lupita kept it simple with a shiny crimson lip and straightened her TWA (teeny weeny Afro) for a sleek natural look.

Check out her full Golden Globes ensemble below. We're huge fans -- what about you?
