While sporting a pair of full-sleeve tattoos today wouldn't cause many people to bat an eyelid, this hasn't always been the case for women with a penchant for body art.

But as these fascinating vintage photos show, tattoos aren't just a current fashion trend and have been bravely worn even as far back as the 1920s, when a women with an inking was practically unheard of.

The pictures are part of a new book titled 100 Years of Tattoos, which features over 400 photographs, many published for the first time, showing the body art movement throughout history.

And, as expected, the ladies featured look incredible...

A great style role model isn't just about the togs you wear - it also has a huge amount to do with your 'tude. And if there is one woman who has a fantastic attitude and general don't-give-a-toss outlook, along with great fashion sense, it is Helen Mirren.

As Helen turns 70 this weekend, we want to salute her fashion savvy, which acts as a beacon of inspiration in the world of older women's fashion.

In fact, on the subject of ageing, she said: "Sex appeal becomes less relevant with age, which is a good thing. Everything changes as we get older, and we have to applaud that fact, don't we?"

But also: "Being me right now is sort of amazing."

One thing's for sure Dame Mirren, we definitely want to be in your gang. Here's a selection of our favourite looks...

She can totally do prints

Here, Helen pulls off a Dolce & Gabbana number perfectly. Some might be scared by the bold print, but it's saved by structured shoulders and a flattering, sculpted skirt. She's also nailed the accessories with a duck egg coloured D&G bag and muted shoes.

Another great look from the The Hundred Foot Journey opening...

She's not afraid to show her legs

Who says you have to cover up while on holiday? Certainly not Queen Helen, who looks classic in white with some killer turquoise pumps.

White outfits can totally go with white hair

So it helps that Helen is the picture perfect image of poise, but this white Badgley Mischka dress is spot on.

The flattering sleeves that melt into a cape at the back is a clever addition and best of all - the classic Mirren take: going sans necklace because there's plenty of embellishment on the dress.

She knows how to rock a red lip

Dressing conservatively doesn't have to mean boring

Lace panels and sleeves can be a godsend for those wanting to carry off a conservative look with a bit of edge. Here Helen pulls it off at the Broadway opening night after party of The Audience.

Nykhor Paul Instagram: Model's Open Letter To Makeup Artists About Dealing With Black Skin

$

0
Two weeks ago, Nykhor Paul joined the chorus of black models exposing inequality in the fashion industry by sharing her struggles on Instagram.

The South Sudanese beauty posted an open letter addressing all the "white people in the fashion world", specifically makeup artists who don't know how to work with models with darker complexions.

The 25-year-old asked, "Why do I have to bring my own makeup to a professional show when all the other white girls don't have to do anything but show up?"

Read the full letter below:

Dear white people in the fashion world! Please don't take this the wrong way but it's time you people get your shit right when it comes to our complexion! Why do I have to bring my own makeup to a professional show when all the other white girls don't have to do anything but show up wtf! Don't try to make me feel bad because I am blue black its 2015 go to Mac, Bobbi Brown, Makeup forever, Iman cosmetic, black opal, even Lancôme and Clinique carried them plus so much more. there's so much options our there for dark skin tones today. A good makeup artist would come prepare and do there research before coming to work because often time you know what to expect especially at a show! Stop apologizing it's insulting and disrespectful to me and my race it doesn't help, seriously! Make an effort at least! That goes for NYC, London, Milan, Paris and Cape Town plus everywhere else that have issues with black skin tones. Just because you only book a few of us doesn't mean you have the right to make us look ratchet. I'm tired of complaining about not getting book as a black model and I'm definitely super tired of apologizing for my blackness!!!! Fashion is art, art is never racist it should be inclusive of all not only white people, shit we started fashion in Africa and you modernize and copy it! Why can't we be part of fashion fully and equally?

A photo posted by nykhor (@nykhor) on

But while the post received a huge amount of support for speaking out about undercover racism, many users also labelled Paul racist herself.

The model took to Instagram again earlier this week to address the issue with another inspiring open letter, below:

Dear white people in the fashion world! All women are beautiful in their own skin whether you are black, white, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, or Indian. Beauty is diverse and it deserved to be appreciated and honored by true artist who are free of prejudice or racism. I am not a racist, I am a human being expressing herself about the lack of diversity in the fashion world. Black models have never been a priority in this industry and they never will be if we don't addressed the root causes. Clearly there is a serious issue facing our world and we as a people are choosing to hide from the truth. We are a society that is too sensitive to the truth but we are hurting and have been for generations. You can't speak your mind as a black person without someone labeling you as an angry black woman, I mean how would white women feels if every time they tried to speak what's happening to them someone calls them names? How would a white girl feel to walk in my shoes as a blue black African girl in this western world? Learn to handle the truth without using racism as an escape goat every time so we can have a healthy dialogue about us and the issues facing us today. I am a child of Africa with many shades of darkness and have no hate for another human being in this world because I was raise to love all things life under God light. I am blue black and proud of it, I am beautiful in my own skin no matter how dark and scary people might feel around me. Embrace your blackness!!! #RefugeeGirl #SouthSudan #WeAreNilotic #Modellife #NiloticQueen #NiloticGirl #BlueBlack #Akobogirl #BlackModelsRock #Africangirlsrock #BlackBird #BeautyandPeace #WalkingArt #Africanstakingover #onepeople #onetribe #OneAfrica #ILOVEAFRICA. @marieclairesa

Beauty blogger Segun Garuba from Lotions, Potions & Me told HuffPost UK Style that she agrees with Paul's statements about how darker skin tones are often an afterthought.

"As a blogger, I'm frequently invited to new product launches, only to arrive and find that they don't have any of the darker shades available! Which means I have to make a special request to the PR or the brand itself to see the shade at a later date." she said.

"Its frustrating and annoying and leaves me feeling excluded from the very industry I'm passionate about."

In her second post, Paul writes that "Beauty is diverse and it deserved (sic) to be appreciated and honored" - and we think the fashion industry needs to take note.

Style Lessons I've Learnt as a New Mum

$

One of the toughest things I've experienced, as a new mum, is to learn the fine act of balancing things. It is natural and all too common to forget about yourself and your needs when you are busy taking care of a tiny person, going about in life and handling zillion other things. However, style is not just about vanity it is also about confidence. Hence, as a new mum it is important to honour some of your needs. Here are some of the style lessons I've learnt as a new mum.

Make an effort:

When you are sleep deprived and exhausted beyond words it is natural to let go. But one thing I've learnt is that sitting around in comfortable yoga pants whole day would just leave one feeling miserable. Taking even ten minutes to myself to put on some lipstick, wear a nice dress or some kohl is happiness in an instant. It sounds simple but can shoot your confidence and put a spring in your step.

Don't throw away your old wardrobe:

Do not get disheartened and simply throw your old clothes thinking you will never be able to fit. Go through your wardrobe with a fine tooth comb, there would be things like a shirt which can be used for layering. Pack your favourite items because you will eventually fit in them.

Recycle and re-style your old stuff:

Breathe some new life to your old clothes by re-styling and recycling them. Your old shirts, cardigans and sweat shirts are great for adding a layer and perfect to hide any sins. When picking new things, look for elasticated waist-it is an invention that I thank God for every day. Get some inexpensive t-shirts in a plethora of colours to mix with things in your wardrobe.

Persevere and don't give up:

Your little one will spit on you and cover you with dribble. But that does not mean you have to give up dressing. As stated in the first point, dressing up enhances your confidence. And if you can achieve some happiness with something as simple as a dress then why not? It is definitely worth it.

The cost of weekly manicures can add up fast, while DIY nail art and transfers can be super fiddly (and pretty much impossible if you're even the slightest bit cack-handed).

But it looks like some sort of beauty genius has found a solution...

A new Facebook video, uploaded by Hong Duong Le from Korea, shows a nail design machine in action - printing an intricate pattern on nails in a matter of seconds.

The video shows a woman placing her finger in the machine, using a touch screen to pick a design. She then waits while something that essentially looks like a jet printer moves back and forth across her nail.

Bam! In less than a minute, she's got a rad flower design - with no chance of smudging.

The 54-second clip, uploaded on 13 July already has over 31m views, and we're hoping the popularity will mean we'll get these magic machines over here asap. Au revoir, Shellac!

Trainer Porn: Converse All Stars Chuck Taylors Get A (Comfy) Redesign 98 Years On

If the UN were a pair of trainers, it would be the mighty Converse All-Stars Chuck Taylors.

Everyone owns a pair (or knows someone who does) and they straddle all types of social hierarchies from ageing creative type to young backpackers setting out on their first gap year.

So the news that iconic Chucks are getting a redesign after 98 years has trainer obsessives twitching with excitement.

What prompted the change? The comfort factor.

converse
The new look Converse All Stars

According to Gizmodo.com: "The biggest update to the Chuck II, as it’s officially called, is the inclusion of a material called Lunarlon. Developed by Nike, it’s a lightweight and bouncy foam that the company uses in its running and basketball shoes, but Lunarlon will now be incorporated into the Chuck II’s rubber sole.

"You probably still don’t want to run a race or shoot hoops while wearing them, but the Chuck IIs should still feel comfy after a long day’s wear."

Why There Needs To Be An Empowering Movement For Plus Size Men

As anyone who has had to break in their Converse at the expense of bunions and pinched feet, this will come as a welcome addition.

Even CEO Jim Calhoun acknowledged the comfort problem by saying: "I love them, I just wish I could wear them for more than a couple hours.

"Kids are growing up in a world where they know comfort, expect comfort, and won't stand for discomfort."

Die-hard fans may worry about the new look, but the main aesthetic changes are the non-slip tongue and the perforated suede liner. Translated: your feet won't stink as much. (And who could argue with that?)

More than a billion pair of Chuck's have been sold, and it accounts for a big chunk of the company's revenue.

Using parent company Nike's technology means that they'll appeal to a newer, younger market, but also fit that comfort factor older fans may be getting from other shoe brands.

Suki Waterhouse Interview: Advice From Kate Moss And What It's Really Like Modelling With Cara Delevingne

$

Suki Waterhouse is one of Britain's hottest young fashion models, having landed huge campaigns for Burberry and Redken, along with a handful of Vogue covers.

While some models struggle with the long hours and gruelling schedules, Waterhouse is having the time of her life. In fact, she may even branch out into the music industry (more on that later).

Talking about her latest Vogue cover shoot with model pals Cara Delevingne and Georgia Jagger, "It was two nights of sleepovers and a lot of fun, it's always a celebration when we get together - it didn't feel like a job."

The 24-year-old's latest role is as the new brand ambassador for Amazon Fashion and the face of their new autumn/winter 2015 campaign, which she described as one of her "favourite ever shoots".

"We shot it in the Amazon Fashion Photography Studio with Cass Bird, it’s really rare you get a photographer that takes you on a journey for the day," she said, speaking exclusively to HuffPost UK Style.

suki waterhouse
Suki Waterhouse at the Amazon Fashion Photography Studio launch party in Shoreditch on 23rd July

On the best fashion advice she's been given

"I think it was Kate Moss that once said 'just because someone gave it to you, you don’t have to wear it'. That happens quite a lot for me, people saying 'you have to wear this to this' and I'm like 'no I dont want to!'.

I don't have a stylist in England, but I do in LA - there's a big studio full of stuff and you just go on a riot. Then someone comes and tapes your boobs down and its perfect."

On fashion disasters

"I have them all the time! I think you've got to make mistakes - they’re a must. I look at pictures of myself from even a couple of months ago. Sometimes its great, sometimes its not but at least I'm trying."

On the realities of being a model

"People touch you up all the time, not sexually, but they’re fondling your boobs and putting underwear on you."

On her future plans

"Fashion design is definitely something I want to go into and I’m working on my own project at the moment. It's just in the beginning stages and I want it to be really perfect so I’m going to work on it for a while."

Waterhouse also told Vogue at the Amazon Fashion Photography Studio launch party last night, that she's working on a music project: "It's singing and I will definitely put something out," she revealed.

suki waterhouse
Suki Waterhouse behind the scenes at her shoot for Amazon Fashion

On her favourite fashion brands

"I loved the gold lurex jumpsuit by Gestuz I wore for the Amazon Fashion shoot, it's so comfortable and I'm very into that. I tend to shop at Carven, Sandro and Cos, then Alfies Antique Market and Kempton Park for vintage pieces."

On her signature 60s beauty look

"I can't actually do a flick, I can't do makeup! If you see me anywhere with it done, it's by someone else. I always think I shoud have picked it up because I get it done so much but I'm really bad.

In my everyday makeup bag I carry foundation, cover up, always a brow pencil and Burberry Kisses lipstick in the shade English Rose that I use as rouge as well. I also use Vaselline for a dewy look and I never use powder."

On her skincare regime

"I’m a big believer in vitamin C serum, I use one from the brand iS Clinicals. Twice a week I'll use a cleanser with salicylic acid in it - if you’re getting bigger pores or a bit spotty, it just tightens everything up."

On her haircare secrets

"I usually just use coconut oil when I'm in the bath but I do have the odd extreme hair conditioning experience - I recently had an Ayurvedic treatment where a doctor poured seven litres of oil on my head. I was like, 'are you joking'. I don't even remember because i passed out asleep. It's supposed to clear your mind too and, I have to say, it did."

Outrage As 14-Year-Old Dior Model Sofia Mechetner Wears Sheer Dress On The Catwalk

$

Young models are nothing new in the world of fashion.

Kate Moss was famously signed to Storm Model Management when she was just 14 years old, while Cara Delevingne first graced the pages of Italian Vogue at the tender age of 10 - albeit wearing a children's line of clothing.

But despite that, we can't help but be surprised by the pictures of model Sofia Mechetner walking in the Christian Dior Autumn Winter 2015 Haute Couture show.

The 14-year-old model was dressed in a sheer dress which clearly revealed her young figure beneath.

christian dior autumn winter 2015

We have blurred the appearance of Sofia Mechetner's nipples in the image above, as she is under the age of 16

Mechetner has reportedly signed a two-year contract, worth £170,000, to front Dior's catwalk shows and advertising.

Her deal comes despite the fact that leading boards in the fashion world, including the British Fashion Council (BFC) and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), have perviously issued guidelines to designers asking that only models who are at least 16 years old appear in catwalk shows.

The BFC has even banned models under 16 years old from walking in London Fashion Week entirely.

While Mechetner's appearance on the Dior catwalk has been described as a fairytale "rags to riches" moment by some news outlets, the designer's decision to feature such a young model in a revealing outfit has been less popular on Twitter.

Writing on Fusion, Nikita Redkar points out that using young models such as Mechetner can be seen as a form of child exploitation.

"Often, young models are forced out of school and into a cutthroat environment where they are competing with many older and established models. They are also treated like adults, face harsh judgment for their appearance - at an age where confidence is delicate - and receive meager benefits," she writes.

"Models who start their careers at a very young age are exposed to exploitation, unregulated pressures such as nudity, and educational sacrifices.

"Even though Mechetner has begun her career already on top, her fate could quickly change after her two-year contract is up."

Kate Moss has previously admitted that pressure to pose in sexualised shoots at a young age contributed to her having a "nervous breakdown" at the age of 17.

"It didn’t feel like me at all. I felt really bad about straddling this buff guy. I didn’t like it. I couldn’t get out of bed for two weeks. I thought I was going to die...It was just anxiety. Nobody takes care of you mentally," she told Vanity Fair.

"There’s a massive pressure to do what you have to do. I was really little, and I was going to work with Steven Meisel. It was just really weird - a stretch limo coming to pick you up from work. I didn’t like it. But it was work, and I had to do it."

Despite such a high profile model speaking out about the sexualisation of young models, it seems like the fashion industry has yet to learn their lesson.

Indian Acid Attack Survivor On Becoming A New York Fashionista: 'I Want To Make People Feel Beautiful'

Monica Singh has finally realised her dreams of becoming a New York fashionista - despite being the victim of a horrific acid attack.

The student from India, now 28, had been top of her class when a jilted admirer organised for an entire bucket of acid to be thrown on her.

The corrosive liquid burned through all seven layers of her skin and nearly killed her.

But spurred on by her father - who spent his life savings on 46 corrective surgeries over the last 10 years - she has battled back to hit her goals.

monica singh
Monica Singh

Last year she was accepted into the prestigious Parsons The New School For Design in Manhattan - where alumni include fashion icons like Tom Ford and Anna Sui.

She now has hopes to become a famous fashion designer herself.

She said: "Fashion has been like an energy booster for me. It keeps me happy, keeps me motivated and strong.

"People like Alexander McQueen and John Galliano were like gods to me. They are the type of people who design dreams. I would love to be a known fashion designer and have a career.

"My passion has always been to make people feel beautiful, like princesses, and hopefully in New York I will get the opportunity to prove what I can do."

monica singh new york
Monica Singh in New York

10 years ago, Monica, then 19, was in the first year of her undergraduate course in apparel design at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, in New Delhi.

But her life was dramatically changed by an acid attack whilst on a break in her hometown of Lucknow.

She said: "There was a guy who'd always admired me and always wanted to be my boyfriend but I was very much focused on my studies and making a career for myself.

"I denied his proposal for marriage and I think he took that denial very seriously and pretty hard."

But she could never have guessed at the callous revenge that was to follow.

monica singh
Monica Singh before the attack

Sat in her car with her window down in the heat, five hired thugs approached and threw a bucket of acid over her.

"At first I thought somebody had pulled a prank and thrown a coffee or a cold drink on me but slowly, slowly it started burning my skin all over, it became painful and I started screaming.

"I got out of my car and screamed for help because the burning was indescribable."

The acid, which also melted part of the car door, scorched her face and neck a charcoal-black colour and doctors initially did not know if she would survive.

She said: "Being a burn patient I was sleeping in a cage. I used to feel like I was already in a coffin.

"There was a time when my entire body was completely skinless. It was very painful and I used to scream but not as a person usually does.

"The screams used to come from my soul, I was screaming 'kill me now, I can’t bear this anymore'."

The support of her stockbroker father Mahendra, mother Savita, 52, and banker brother Nikhil, 32, has been pivotal in her recovery.

Her father spent his life-savings of £50,000 on 46 surgeries to repair the damage - with doctors using a new type of graft with skin from her back.

But Mahendra also instilled a belief in her to not give up and to continue her studies.

Monica said: "He asked what I wanted to do and I told him I wanted to go back to college and get a degree. He said that's all he'd wanted to hear and that he would do everything to make sure that happened."

After a long struggle she finally got her degree in 2009 and began work as a freelance designer and buyer.

And in January 2014 she went one step further when she was accepted to study fashion marketing at Parsons.

A crowd-funding campaign was launched to raise $50,000 (£32,150) to pay for her fees and she finally started in August 2014.

She said: "When I first got here I remember looking out of my window at the lights in Time Square and jumping up and down saying to myself 'I'm finally here'.

"We all have our share of sorrows and sadness. But if you can create something beautiful out of it then that is amazing.

"My dream is to do well through my education and career so that I can give something back to make my father proud and to show that even after what happened to me, I still went on to achieve my dreams.

"New York is somewhere where I can establish myself and I want to create a Monica Singh who can do what she wants to do and do it all herself."

Unfortunately, her father was unable to see her dreams realised as he died from organ failure two years ago.

As for the people who almost destroyed her life, they are yet to be brought to justice - almost a decade after the attack.

According to the Indian press, two of her attackers are in custody but three are out on bail.

In April 2013 a new law was passed entitling acid attack survivors to compensation from state government and the attackers but as the assault on Monica pre-dates this, she will not benefit.

For now she is focused on her studies, internship and making a name for herself in the cutthroat world of fashion as well as creating her own foundation for other victims of acid attacks.

Her housemate Kathryn Paul has been particularly inspired by her story.

She said: "When she first told me her story I was very shocked and had no idea that's what had happened.

"We both started crying and immediately made a connection.

"In the future I really do think she can do whatever she would like to accomplish."

Manolo Blahnik may finally appease the rift between handbag and shoe loyalists (you may love both but you'll always love one slightly more).

The shoe designer is set to launch his first ever bag collection - six different styles for Autumn/Winter.

For those of us whose Manolo fever was sparked by Sex and the City, this is very good news indeed. For those of us who don't have Carrie Bradshaw's style connections or rich arty Russian lovers, it's not so great in that the bags start from a whopping £1300.

Needless to say, the handbags aren't for every day use. These are Swarovski crystal-encrusted little clutches made from satin and crepe de chine, and can be snaffled at the store on Old Church Street, Liberty and Harrods at the end of July.

According to Blahnik, the inspiration for the embellishments came from Hangisi shoe buckles.

He said: "“This collection came up because it is something that I really wanted to do - I had no rush in getting this done.

“I like to make things beautifully and sometimes to get something right it takes time. At the moment I have no plans to make other accessories. For the moment I would like to enjoy the bags, and I am already thinking about more bags for next season!”

Speaking to Vogue.com, he also said: "I love ornaments in my shoes so why not add these to the bags too? These bags are an extension of some of the shoe styles I really like as I wanted to keep the connection between the shoes and bags."

Chief executive officer Kristina Blahnik, who is the designer's niece, said to WWD, "the designs are evening-focused, and future collections will have different colorways and crystals, such as sapphires or rubies." She confirmed the company is also looking at doing day bags as well.

Beatrice Borromeo married Monaco royal Pierre Casiraghi in a stunning Monte Carlo ceremony on 25 July, and we can't take our eyes off her dress.

Breaking tradition, the 29-year-old model and heiress wore a pink and gold lace Valentino gown before later changing into a floor-length white gown for her evening party.

Valentino Haute Couture paid tribute to Borromeo's delicate yet sophisticated dress by posting a photo on their Instagram.

The designers wrote: "The House of Valentino is pleased to announce that Beatrice Borromeo wore a Valentino Haute Couture dress designed by Creative Directors, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, for her civil wedding with Pierre Casiraghi on July 25th at the Prince's Palace of Monaco.

"The wedding gown was created in a pale pink and gold lace silk chiffon."

The sheer pink-tinted dress is laced on top with short, batwing sleeves and gracefully falls down to the floor with lace detail around the edges on the bottom.

The heiress wore pink-coloured floral headband to finish her look.

Borromeo and Casiraghi - son of Princess Caroline, making him seventh in line to the throne - were pictured together after their wedding look effortlessly stylish, but that's no difference to how they usually are.

The bride was later pictured in a floor-length white gown with a low neckline and cut-out sections below her chest.

However, considering this couple has such serious style credentials, we aren't surprised. Here are six photos that prove Borromeo and Casiraghi their fashion credits...

The black and gold

While Borromeo wows in a floor-length gown with matching gold jewellery, Casiraghi wears a simple yet sleek black and white suit with bow tie.

The formal with shades

Borromeo's loose, over-the-shoulder midi-dress with a detailed neckline is so simple, but so on-point.

Casiraghi sports three shades of grey with a deep purple patterned tie - a colour previously in fashion wasteland thanks to Willy Wonka. He totally pulls it off though.

The bold jackets

Most people look like plonkers in puffa jackets. Not these two. Old school, effortlessly cool. Paired with some shades, plain tees and jeans, it's clear they do casual well.

The white trousers

Matching straight-legged white trousers. Not that we condone wearing matching clothes with your boyfriend, but this just works. Mainly because of Borromeo's stunning top.

This couple just don't get formal wrong.

The teal tie and dress

If there's one thing we've realised, it's that Borromeo and Casiraghi definitely discuss how their outfits could match before they walk out the door. While Borromeo wears a lacey, teal mid-length dress, Casiraghi matches his suit to his girlfriend by adding a teal patterned tie.

Multimasking is one of those beauty trends that you won't believe you didn't figure out yourself sooner because it just makes so much sense.

We all know that different parts of our face have different needs. You might have an oily t-zone but dry cheeks, so one applying one face mask all over your face might suit one area, but not another.

Step in multimasking - artfully applying different face masks to different parts of your face. It's the secret to dreamy skin and Instagram agrees.
