The Road To Fashion Week - Fashion East, The Organisation Supporting Emerging Talent

$

It’s impossible to know how many young, talented designers have been chewed up and spat out by the fashion industry.

The most successful will see their products grace the pages of Vogue while celebrities scramble to be pictured with their latest handbag slung over their shoulders, or snapped wearing their dresses. But for every success story, there are a hundred designers whose visions we never see, whose dreams and drawings remain undiscovered and who simply aren’t able to generate the exposure and finances required to take their businesses to the next level.

That’s where Fashion East comes in. The not-for-profit organisation, which celebrates its 15th birthday this year, was founded by journalist and PR guru Lulu Kennedy, “Basically, what we do is select designers we believe in the most and who need some support and then we give them sponsorship, a show, advice and mentoring,” explains Kennedy. “We give them a small bursary as well, which doesn't get very far. The equivalent would be a music industry showcase.”

Designers like Richard Nicoll, Roksanda Ilincic, Holly Fulton, Jonathan Saunders and Gareth Pugh are just some of the designers who have flourished and evolved under the guidance of Fashion East.

Behind The Glamour - What It Really Takes To Launch A Fashion Label

Kennedy sees her protégées as children who she’ll nurture and advise before sending them out into the big, wide world of fashion. "I'm just a foster mum,” she explains. “The designers are with me for one or two seasons and then I let them go. I can't grant them wishes. They make things happen. They've got to put the work in,"

So how exactly does Fashion East help its chosen few? Designers are given a bursary, use of a venue, a complete catwalk production show package, professional catwalk photos and video footage. For one season, they’re mentored by Kennedy and taught about PR by her crack team of PR professionals, and are taken to a sales show room in Paris for the opportunity to showcase their work to the world’s top fashion buyers.

The selection process is tough. Unsurprisingly, spaces are limited – the organisation works with just three womenswear designers and three menswear designers each year – and potential candidates, who must not have been running their business for more than three years, start by submitting an application form which requests information on their vision and goals along with their career history.

If they’re lucky enough to make it onto the coveted shortlist, they must then submit samples of their work and attend a meeting with Lulu, who will decide with her panel members which designers will make the cut.

One of the organisation’s success stories is 24-year-old Mary Benson, a bespectacled (and achingly cool) designer who grew up on one of Leeds’ toughest council estates.

mary benson

Benson discovered her calling after being given a sewing machine when she was 15. While her fellow teenagers were getting drunk on cheap cider and hanging out on street corners, she was earning extra pocket money by making handbags and clothes, which were sold to friends.

Before she was out her teens, Benson’s designs had been stocked in Leeds’ top boutiques and she’d appeared on the TV series Mary, Queen of Shops. After making enough money to cover the cost of a fashion degree at the University of Westminster, Benson applied to Fashion East.

The lights went up on her first runway show this spring, and her designs have already proved a hit with celebrities like the likes of Rita Ora, Paloma Faith and Radio 1 DJ Gemma Cairney. Like most of the designers Fashion East works with, for Mary, it’s not about the glitz and the glamour. It’s about making a living doing what she loves most, and having the opportunity to bring her vision to the wider world. And thanks to Fashion East, she’s doing exactly that.

Bestival Fancy Dress: Summer Of Love Outfits That Stole Our Hearts

Bestival fancy dress always offers a welcome relief from the uniform of denim shorts and waistcoats seen at music festivals over the summer.

This year things could have been different, as the "Summer of Love" theme played right into the usual festival tropes of care-free hippy fashion.

We needn't have worried however, as the ensembles Bestival goers created this year were every bit as extravagant and outlandish as we hoped for.

Monochrome Nails: Tattoo-Inspired Manicure Ideas To Try At Home

Monochrome nail ideas are inspired by everything from paintings and pop art, to nature and ancient symbols... but this tattoo-inspired manicure is the coolest we've seen so far.

A photo posted by Maddy Ayers (@maadnails) on

East London-based freelance nail artist Maddy Ayers (Maad Nails) told HuffPost UK Style how to get the look in four simple steps:

1. For this monochrome look, start off (as always!) with a base coat – here I went for Bourjois.

2. Then paint all fingers white, except the middle one which will be black. I used two Essie polishes for this – Blanc and Licorice. Make sure you apply a couple of coats to give an even colour.

3. Using a striper brush or nail art pen, you can then start adding your designs (paint your designs in black for the white nails and vice versa). These patterns were inspired by Tati Compton’s stick and poke tattoos and are fun to mix and match, so pick your faves and go with those!

For any straight lines, use a striper with a small amount of polish on it and angle it almost flat along the nail. This way, following the natural line of the brush will keep it neat, so you don’t need to worry about shaky hands. For dots, use either the nib end of a nail art pen or a dotting tool (you can pick these up really cheaply online).

4. Once your designs are complete, cover with a thick layer of top coat (I like China Glaze for this). Then add a load of gold rings, and you’re good to go!

Duchess Of Cambridge Has A Fringe: Top Hair Stylists Offer Advice On How To Achieve This Signature Look

The Duchess of Cambridge has a fringe and everyone is talking about it.

She debuted her new look while returning to royal duties with the Duke of Cambridge.

Her latest cut includes a grown-out fringe swept to the side with shapely layers around her face.

This is how her hair has been transformed.

hair

It's not the most drastic of haircuts, but it's amazing how much a fringe can change someone's look.

Trevor Sorbie is a big fan, telling HuffPost UK Style: "I love this style on Kate, it’s youthful and has a definite boho vibe.

"It’ll suit all face shapes, it just depends on how you style it – when you blow dry a style like this I’d recommend styling the layers away from the face to open up the face shape for a more flattering finish.

"It’s a style that will work on most hair types, but it will be high maintenance to style in the morning."

Karine Jackson, former London hairdresser of the year, organic colour expert and current winner of Creative Head’s Most Wanted Hair Trend, says it is important to take your natural hair type into account before opting for this look.

She told us: "I really like what Kate’s done with her hair, it’s about time she changed up her signature style to make more of a feature of her hair.

"When hair is long and straight it can have a tendency to drag the face down and look flat so this style gives an instant lift.

"The shape around her face really softens her features, which is great if you have a square or long face.

"This style will work for any face shape but it would need to be cut and tailored around the jaw and cheekbones to work.

"If you’ve got curly hair, the layers will work but it won’t look anything like Kate’s new style. You’ll get an amazing soft bounce, making this cut a suit-all style for autumn."

Kendall Jenner Demos How To Shave Your Legs On The Go In NYFW Video

Kendall Jenner is fast proving her role as a beauty icon is well earned.

The 19-year-old model has been rushing between catwalks at New York Fashion Week and she has become a master of grooming on the go - managing to fit in a quick leg shave while in the back of an SUV on route to Diane Von Furstenberg's SS16 show.

As anyone who has tried to shave their legs in a hurry will know, dry shaving in this manner is likely to lead to a multitude of nicks and cuts, but Jenner expertly avoids any accidents by keeping her legs moistened with a bottle of Fiji water.

Kendall captioned the short clip to her 36.7million Instagram followers: "so much fashion, not enough week #YouGottaDoWhatYouGottaDo."

Model Billy Huxley On What He Wears At A Festival (Including Beard Grooming Advice)

$

Festivals are always mucky affairs - what clothes do you tend to pack with you? Style over substance or the other way around?

Style over substance definitely. I tend to wear dark skinny jeans with either a light-weight jacket or jumper because you're out all day and into the night, when it might get chilly. And a waterproof for sure.

You were wearing some pretty snazzy sunglasses - are you an accessories man?

Definitely. Shades and hats are essential. The first pair of sunglasses broke on day one, but luckily Diesel had left some spares in my tipi. I wore a hat every day at Bestival - beanies and caps.

When it comes to shoes, what kind of trainers do you tend to go for?

I'm a Converse man. I took a few pairs - black & white - they work well with jeans or shorts. The weather was good so I took a gamble and left the wellies at home. Too heavy, and Converse will always dry out!

What's the one thing you've learned about packing for festivals - what can't you do without?

Pack light, especially if you are going by speedboat like we did. There's always a lot of walking and you'll never wear everything you bring anyway. Just stick to the essentials, you can't really go wrong! And don't forget your toothbrush...

Is the beard a daily grooming thing and how do you do it when it's Portaloo Central at festivals?

I suppose the beard look is all part of festivals so I don't worry too much about it really - you don't want to look too groomed either! I do carry a beard comb though, just in case.

A diverse cast of non-models were set with the challenge of recreating iconic high-fashion ads and came away with more than just beautiful photos.

People of various genders, races and sizes discussed how they never felt represented in the media.

With professional photographers and a set created by BuzzFeed, the people were posed to replicate the iconic fashion ads.

After the photos were shot, they were given to graphic designers to turn into high-end fashion ads.

The participants were then shown their photo in comparison to the original advert and they were all completely shocked by the results.

"This photo shows me looking calm laying on a bed when in reality I was drooling all over my hands," one woman said.

"What you see is one single moment when in reality, there was so much going on," she added.

Ultimately, I Have Lost the Fringe War and Kate Middleton Will Too

$

A long spell of wet weather is always blamed for a multitude of dismays.

August, we have been told, was one of the wettest ever, with Scottish farmers apparently hit hard and George Osborne no doubt putting that excuse into his back pocket just in case the figures show we haven't done enough shopping on the high street.

This summer's wet weather has also hit another area - and that is my fringe. And it is for that reason that, seeing Kate Middleton step out WITH a fringe just as Autumn approaches, I found myself raising my eyebrows with the sort of hard-won expertise that can only be gained by those who, like me, may have enjoyed victory in a few fringe battles but ultimately have lost the fringe war.

For almost a decade, I have had, and loved, my fringe. What started as a long sideways fringe formed out of just a narrow section of the hair on the front of my head back in 2005, slowly become an 'extreme' fringe, cut dead straight, just below eyebrows with the hair from my crown even joining in.

2015-09-14-1442239516-9086948-IMG_4806NK.jpg

As someone who has otherwise had the same mid length brown hair since I was four, the fringe was my little bit of statement, the only proper 'hair style' decision I have made - ever. But most of the time I wondered, as Kate is no doubt find herself doing soon, how wise a decision a fringe actually was.

Yes, the fringe may have covered a multitude of sins: wrinkles, a chicken pox scar, very sparse eyebrows (a genetic anomaly, not the result of over plucking).

But 'the fringe' was also very high maintenance. Every day, it needed washing, blow drying, straightening and then the perfect combination of dry shampoo (stops fringe going limp and lank) and hairspray (keeps it straight and in position) if I was to be sure it would still be straight, bouncing and neat by the end of the day.

Still, it was prone to curling up at the slightest hint of drizzle or sweat, or to hanging in clumps on a windy day .

Hats were impossible, even when freezing cold. Because what do you do with your fringe when you put a hat on? If you put a hat straight on a fringe, it squashes it, leaving it like the hair equivalent on a deflated balloon stuck to your forehead. You can push your fringe sideways for the hat, which looks fine when the hat is on, but like roadkill when you take it off.

So this year, on our 'staycation' in Devon, with the endless August rain threatening and indeed destroying the fringe at every turn, I decided I'd had enough.

I have endured winters with a fringe and without hats because needs must, but a wet summer too was too much. The fringe had to go.

A deft brush stroke, one of my three-year-old's hair slides and it was clipped back. Leaving me feeling instant horror at being faced with the image of my face - in full. Having spent so many years peering at just half a face beneath a fringe, it just didn't look right. I wondered is my face abnormally long?

All I could do was rationally remind myself that pre-fringe I'd never considered myself a particularly large faced person so it was probably OK and I'd get used to it. Still, I spent the rest of the day as though the whole of Devon was turning to stare at my unfortunate horse face.

I scoured the internet trying to understand how hair, without a fringe, actually works. What does one even do with the front of their hair nowadays? I quickly found a whole trend of plaits going around the head (love this - but need the fringe to grow longer). I even called on the help of my friend Amy, a make up artist, who experimented with partings and showed me how to clip the fringe to one side in a way that suits a 38-year-old. I wasn't sure I liked the result, but I was determined to solider on and discover a new fringe-free empowerment.

The first real sign that life had changed (for the better) came one weekend when, back in London, I was out in Clapham, sans coat with hood, sans umbrella, and predictably, it was raining.

Standing on the pavement with friends deciding where to go, I became aware my partner was a little jittery. It turned out he was worried that we were standing around while my hair was getting wet (and yes I am cringing a little at the thought that I have become a person for whom conversations must be stopped and everyone must be re-located on account of my hair getting wet but that is what a fringe does to you).

2015-09-14-1442239829-9728153-image1.JPG

No, I was able to say, it's fine. I have no fringe! I have a clip! It doesn't matter if my hair gets wet! And so we stood there a while making a decision, and I arrived at the restaurant with my fringe not looking as it usually would following such a situation, like a mini skirt that had shrunk and warped in the wash, but looking like nothing because it Was. Not. There.

This, I thought, is a form of freedom. And it's true, life does seem a little bit easier. In the mornings, I no longer have to 'wash my fringe'. I no longer have to blow dry, straighten, and then spray on my heady concoction of dry shampoo and hair spray. I can wear a hat and take my hat on and off like a normal person. I can do the school run simply by pulling my hair back and dashing out.

I still think perhaps I looked better, trendier, more edgy, more creative with my fringe. But I am relieved it is on it's way out. A few more weeks, and it will be long enough for my clip to go too.

Kate may have all the benefits of royalty at her disposal, including hairdressers and stylists to make sure her fringe looks as perfect as possible. Still, my predication is that in a few months, her fringe will be no more. Going up against a fringe is a battle that I fear no-one, not even Kate Middleton, can ultimately win.

#BlackModelsMatter: 'Statement' Bag Makes Important Point About Diversity At New York Fashion Week

$

Carrying a "statement" bag doesn't usually involve making much of a statement, but one model and artist has used her arm candy to make an important point about diversity at New York Fashion Week.

Ashley B. Chew customised her large black handbag by writing BLACK MODELS MATTER across it in white paint.

Speaking to HuffPost UK Style Chew said: "Diversity in the fashion industry is very frustrating at times but it is getting better with some designers."

A photo posted by @ash_chew on

Chew's bag's slogan, which draws on the words of the Black Lives Matter movement, caused quite a stir as Chew said on Instagram: "People have lost their minds, my bag took more photos than I did in 11 hours".

Chew teamed her bag with a white tank top she designed in the style of a Pantone colour swatch with the work BLACKNESS.

"I individually hand silkscreen each shirt," Chew said. "These shirts sold out in hours back in April, but I'm thinking when I get home to Indianapolis, I will have to roll out another batch due to the attention both the shirt and bag have been getting. So many New York Fashion Week goers have been asking me!"

Chew walked the runway at the FTL Moda New York Fashion Week show, which was opened by model of the moment Madeline Stuart.

"FTL Moda are devoted to casting models of diversity no matter what disability, age, ethnicity, and overall appearance," Chew said.

"Its refreshing to walk a runway that celebrates all types of beauty, but this is not always the case. I have seen many shows over the years and the ethnic model ratio is still very poor with some shows.

"As a black model and fine artist it is disappointing sometimes to walk into a casting and seeing later in runways they didn't cast a model of colour.

"Overall there have been changes made, some in the industry have been absolutely fantastic with representing an entire spectrum of beauty."

A photo posted by @ash_chew on

The Huffington Post has recently launched our #NYFW4All and #LFW4All campaign to highlight moments in Fashion Week that include people of all skin tones, genders, sizes, shapes and personalities - and we are happy to say Chew is on board with our message.

"I would be honored to help in representing the NYFW4All campaign," she said. "Many of these models I look up to, myself, my art, my style is a reflection of the beauty of women of colour."

We applaud Chew's use of fashion to bring more attention to diversity and inclusivity to the catwalk.

Grooming Gossip

2015-09-11-1441982722-8878589-Ollie_Locke_Medium_Alex_Wallace_Photography_0005.jpg

It would be accurate to say that I'm on speed dial with my girlfriends when it comes to male related dramas! Whether it's good or bad, they come to me for advice - not that I'm complaining, as I love being there for them. There has been a recently flurry of a lot of my girlfriends having issues with their boyfriends in the grooming department.I've noticed that my girlfriends often say that the men that they are dating are not groomed enough, or too groomed!

You can spot them from a mile off with their bed-hair, 5 o'clock shadows, and bitten nails! Not attractive in the slightest! For some, that's their dream guy, but the times are changing and men are becoming more and more 'metrosexual', but this can sometimes go off the scale and become overly groomed and using more products than their partners! With the beauty market getting bigger and bigger, there are more products on the shelf marketed to men to help them with their hair, wrinkles, tired skin or anything else in-between!

Now if us men are going to reach for the grooming cabinet and use a bit of help whether it be a bit of fake tan or perhaps shaping of the eyebrows we need to make sure it's subtle. I'm sure we have all been guilty of dodgy fake tan lines or going overboard with the tweezers! I've heard from experiences from my guy mates that they grab their girlfriend's fake tan and have ended up orange as a result! I would recommend taking a step back and picking products that suit your skin and hair type, you would be surprised about the results you'll receive if you choose the right products.

That is why there are experts to help us - it's ok to go for a spray tan and get your eyebrows done I just wouldn't advise a double appointment with the girlfriend in tow! I think the balance to this is trying to pull of the effortless chic look without looking like you have spent hours creating it! So if you want to be the man about town then you need to make sure that you're dressed smart, well groomed with that right amount of rugged! It's the age of the gentleman and the metrosexual, so put down your phones and get shopping for those perfect-grooming products for your man! I think buying the basics are perfect to slowly introduce your man into the world of beauty, maybe don't scare him off with complicated gadgets or multiple skincare products such as serums, masks and exfoliants! As that might scare him off!

A lot of my male friends really are not bothered about grooming and the more their girlfriends push them to care the less they actually do. What's the conclusion? Ladies, I say if the ground rules need to be laid down do it early doors! I think deep down we know you are all usually always right... although we certainly don't find it easy to admit!

This London Fashion Week, We're Uniting the Realms of Fashion and Technology

I cannot believe it is almost that time of the year again - London Fashion Week.

With just five days to go until the big night - Saturday 19 September, when friends, family and the media will gather to support my spring summer collection - the office is beyond crazy. Everything kind of builds to a grand crescendo as we frantically get every item of clothing finished to perfection, keeping everything and everyone involved in check. Little sleep, early starts, and lots of caffeine.

So much more goes into a fashion show than just the amazing clothes and to call it "full-on" would be an understatement. There are the shoes, the jewellery, the hair, the make-up, the venue, the lighting, the music... it's like putting on a big production all at the same time as well as actually developing the collection!

And as all of this preparation takes place, I obviously need to continue running my business. The fashion industry is high pressure and fast moving but nothing can be put on hold. My team and myself can't slack off for a moment - unless of course it's to tend to my gorgeous French bulldog Peggy who can often be found distracting everyone around the building. (She knows she's the real boss around here!)

So, yes, it's all a bit manic but it's rather fun manic. It reminds me of Christmas at our headquarters in east London because we send stuff down to the factories to get made; new fabrics and finished samples arrive and everyday there is something new to open.

As well as previewing my collection, my catwalk show is set to be extra fascinating this year, thanks to a project I've been working on with the techies over at Visa's innovation hub, Visa Europe Collab. We have a surprise for you all tucked up our perfectly tailored sleeves...

Being a self-trained designer, I am always trying to better myself and improve my skills, while being at the forefront of new ideas. Where design meets technology, the way the two different worlds work together, is a really interesting space.

So we've been collaborating on something in order to unite the realms of fashion and technology. I can't give too much away, but together, we have essentially created a new interactive retail experience as part of the catwalk showcase itself.

I enjoy exploring innovative ways to get products out to consumers and for you all to shop through new technology. Often when I indulge in a shopping spree, the worst part is the dreaded (boring!!) join-the-long-queue-to-pay process.

I'm not a particular impatient person, but you're telling me to line up for the changing rooms and THEN to endure another one at the till? No thank you. So much precious time utterly wasted... time that could be better spent browsing and shopping some more.

That's what inspired House of Holland's collaboration with Visa for this show - looking for a way to weave the latest payments technology into the emotion of the catwalk to give a truly different retail experience. It's a world-first, so stay tuned!

Meanwhile, you can learn a bit more about what we've been up to here.

Plus-size model Ashley Graham stole the limelight at New York Fashion Week as she took to the runway to model her new lingerie collection.

Graham, who is a UK size 16, led a group of models down the runway to debut some pieces from her collaboration with Canadian brand, Addition Elle.

The underwear collection, called Black Orchid, is designed for fuller-figured women and includes pieces in black, blue and purple.

Graham is a fearless campaign for body diversity both in the fashion industry and the media and so it comes as no surprise that her fellow models were not only diverse in body size and shape, but ethnicity.

Posting a photo on Instagram after the show, she said: "What an amazing experience!! All the girls looked amazing."

The 28-year-old has recently been involved in campaigns such as #PlusIsEqual and dedicated a recent TED talk to celebrating her curves.

Standing in front of a full-length mirror on stage she said to herself: "You are bold, you are brilliant and you are beautiful. There is no other woman like you."

But she didn't stop there. While most women are preconditioned to berate their reflection, Graham has nothing but good things to say about her appearance.

"Back fat? I see you popping over my bra today, but that's alright I'm going to choose to love you. And think thighs? You are just so sexy you can't stop rubbing each other. That's alright. I'm going to keep you," she added.

"And cellulite, I have not forgotten about you. I'm going to choose to love you even though you want to take over my whole bottom half. You're a part of me and I love you."

All hail Ashley Graham.

Alexa Chung has revealed her go-to high street fashion piece for instant chic this season.

We usually see her in mini skirts, dresses or dungarees, but for AW15, the 31-year-old is taking inspiration from the 70s with a high waists, corduroy and bold colour.

When asked by The Guardian about her must-have item for this season, she said: "Red high-waisted cord trousers from Topshop."

Although the beauties from Topshop (below) are sold out, her go-to item has given us a few ideas.

Chung has rocked high-waisted flared trousers before, but they are far from the red statement trousers she'll be wearing this season.

Chung seems to have perfected her signature style, having won British Style Icon three years in a row at the British Fashion Awards.

A fan of breton tops, pinafores and brogues, these key pieces are now a staple in many women's wardrobes.

But as Chung said, there's not a "right way to dress".

She added: "People get bored and crave the opposite – that’s what fashion is about.

"I suppose it's the desire to create something new and move forward so if you just stick to how you feel the chances are you’ll probably collide with a few trends along the way."

Serena Williams unveiled her Spring 2016 collection at New York Fashion Week on Tuesday, proving she is not just a star on the tennis court.

The 33-year-old, who had an unexpected defeat in the US Open last week, was all smiles on the catwalk, sporting in a black fringe number from her collection, Signature Statement.

"Throughout my life, I’ve always believed in pushing boundaries... whether it’s in tennis, business, or fashion," Williams said in a statement.

Speaking to Vogue backstage before the show, she said: "I've always loved fashion. I was always that girl that played with my dolls, and I went to fashion school, so it's not just made up for me. It's actually something that I really enjoy and that I have a lot of fun with."

"I want [my customers] to feel empowered," she added. "I want them to feel beautiful.

"The collection works on every size person. You should [be able] to look good and feel good and love who you are and, at the same time, be stylish."

Gigi Hadid and Lily Aldridge were also spotted enjoying the show, sitting alongside Drake and Wintour.

Speaking about her relationship with the fashion editor, Williams said before the show: "Anna’s really been my mentor. She’s gone over this whole collection."

And we feel this Instagram really sums up how pleased she was with the collection.

Meanwhile the rumour mill continues to churn as William's 'boyfriend' Drake sat front row next to US Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

If that wasn't enough to hint at romance, the singer's very own track "Back To Back" played as the models strutted down the catwalk.

Backstage the hitmaker rushed to congratulate her after the show, kissing her hand in a heart-melting gesture.

Naomi Campbell has shared a topless photo on Instagram using the anti-censorship hashtag #FreeTheNipple.

The supermodel uploaded the photo as a sneak peak of her soon-to-be released Taschen two-volume books, which are an anthology of nude images by Paolo Riversi.

Instagram hasn't taken the photo down yet, but they have a reputation for censoring photos in which female nipples are exposed.
