Art Installation Stitches Up Fashion Waste

This year, Hornsey Town Hall in London's Crouch End, opened its doors as part of a year-long community and arts initiative to bring this award winning landmark building back into use.

Built in 1935 to house the local council, it is an incredible example of modernist architecture, stripped of the fripperies and classicism of Victoriana and built to embody civic pride and hope. Ironically, after the council moved out in 1966, this robustly municipal building saw years of closure and broken promises about opening it up for public use.

Today, it couldn't be more different. The town hall is full of the hum and excitement of art, music, theatre, dance and workshops, and for local people, it still feels thrilling to be able to just walk in and access their local architectural heritage.

It is somehow fitting that it is here, in this reclaimed building, that artist Daniella Bowyer is running an intriguing community project creating a bold art installation from reclaimed textiles that challenges unethical practices in the fashion industry.

At a series of free workshops supported by the fashion reuse charity TRAID, the public have been invited to help sew together waste textiles to make a huge river of colour, pattern and texture. As part of its sustainable education programme, TRAID has also invited local schools to take part giving young people the chance to investigate the impacts of fashion outside of the classroom. The final piece will flow through Hornsey Town Hall symbolising the river of surplus and waste which usually goes unseen by the consumer.

It's a piece inspired by Bowyer's own preoccupations, as an artist and mother of a little girl, with the environmental impacts of our economic choices, with the systemic pressures that define people as consumers rather than citizens, and particularly, with how fast fashion fuels over-consumption.

2015-10-09-1444392687-3734158-working.jpg
Adults & children stitching together textiles for the installation ©Daniella Bowyer

Her own upbringing in a cash strapped household meant that unlike a lot of her wealthier peers, she was usually dressed in clothes from charity shops. "The subject of fashion has been on my mind since I was growing up." she says. "As a teenager, I felt slightly embarrassed around my wealthier peers but my Dad always said fashion was for mindless followers, and he was right."

When Bowyer had her daughter, like many parents, her concerns about the future sharpened and she has become acutely aware of how over-consumption is ravaging our planet. She emails me with some thoughts around her art piece and talks passionately (which she describes apologetically as 'a bit of a rant') about fast fashion's expert exploitation of our desire to fit in and feel current, particularly children and young people.

"Our planet is being destroyed piece by piece by our economic choices. The pressure on extremely young children to be in fashion is utterly contrived by the fast fashion industry. It exploits children's vulnerabilities to fit in, and teaches them to have a disposable attitude to belongings. The throwaway society we are encouraged into - only made possible by cheap labour and poor quality clothing - results in more poverty and an endless feeling of 'lack'."

Bowyer believes we can reclaim this power by understanding that we can change it. She says "No-one HAS to buy cheap clothes. We can make a different choice. Our obsession with new is killing us and our planet. Soon, we won't be able to breathe, either psychologically or literally, if we don't re-educate ourselves and make more intelligent choices."

Her art piece - both the making process and the final installation - is designed to allow participants to connect with the problematic nature of our fashion consumption. The process of stitching together waste materials, followed by the final installation of a river of textile spilling through a public building for the community to interact with, inspires us to see the makers behind our clothes and the waste the industry is predicated upon.

"The workshops create a space for people to explore and discuss the realities of where their clothes really come from and who is involved. Consumers become workers, the viewer become the artist and a process of experiential learning comes about. A realisation they are temporarily experiencing what it is to be a faceless worker of the garments we wear. There is a dark poetry in it."

Help create the installation at free fortnightly workshops at Hornsey Town Hall, The Broadway, Crouch End, N8 9JJ. All materials included. Drop in any time between 11 - 4pm on Sat 24 and Sun 25 October; Sat 7 and Sun 8 November; Sat 21 and Sun 22 November; Sat 5 and Sun 6 December. The final piece will be installed at Hornsey Town Hall in December. Follow @traid @DaniellaMariaUK

10 Signs You're Still a Nineties Girl

$

0
The Nineties are having a 'moment'. TFI Friday is back, chunky-soled shoes are part of the zeitgeist and Nineties nostalgia has made that tricky decade spent navigating adolescence seem way cooler than it ever was at the time. So if you're currently experiencing flashbacks to that lost weekend at Creamfields or shoehorning your 'I saw Oasis at Knebworth/got mashed at the Hacienda/was spotted by a talent scout at the Clothes Show Live' stories into every conversation, chances are, you're a Nineties girl at heart.

1. You're beyond excited that Nineties fashion is 'in' again and discover there is the wardrobe of a Shoreditch hipster stashed in your loft. You knew one day you'd be glad you hung on to that satin slip dress from Snob and those Dr Marten's cherry reds.

2. You're secretly thrilled Alex from Blur turned out to be a middle-class cheese peddler, he always seemed like such a nice boy. Now you can't get enough of his over-priced chèvre.

3. Although you claim to have quit the white stuff, you can't quite get your head around 'sugar-shaming'. After all, growing up on a diet of Pop-Tarts and Hubba Bubba never did you any harm.

4. You audibly gasp at recent pictures of Johnny Depp. That paunch, those ill-fitting suits and yellow teeth... he used to be so pretty.

5. And yet Bez has aged so well...

6. You consider selling your 'vintage' FCUK and Morgan skinny tees on Ebay. They were tight enough the first time around, there's no way you'll still be able to breathe in them now.

7. Why has buying festival tickets become so difficult? Forget photo ID ticketing, circa 1990 all you needed was a field, a strobe and a bloke with some decks.

8. Buying music has become way too easy. Gone are the bootleg CDs, excitable Saturday queues in Our Price and pilgrimages to the vinyl mecca that was Tower Records. The Apple Store just takes all the fun out of it.

9. You secretly panic that brown lipstick might make a comeback too. It never suited anyone apart from Winona Ryder. Same goes for gamine pixie crops and heroin-chic.

10. You're desperate to see the Happy Mondays at the Brixton Academy, then remember this time around you'll have to book a babysitter and probably a week off work to recover.

The Power of the Face Workout

© AB Kellow

We all know that working out regularly is good for our bodies, but what about our faces too? And what is the best science for the perfect facial?
Through studies it has been proven that there can be a difference between chronological age and biological age- we've all met a fabulous 50 year old who looks not a day over 35 but has boundless energy and a certain glow to her face.
It has us questioning; how did she do it? And more importantly where can I get it?
That's where I discovered Face Gym, a new invigorating workout that targets the muscles in the face to tone, tighten and lift. Exclusive to Selfridges, here are my top ten facts on the all-conquering new facial...

1-
Facegym makes your face glow by literally working out the face. The best bit is you don't have to move a muscle with their wonderfully trained therapists doing the hard work for you!
Using similar techniques as circuit training for the body, it combines cardio with laser pulsing and radiofrequency to make the skin shine, polish and keep working after you leave.

2- The science for this is specific. The founder Inge Thomas used to work anonymously as the Financial Times Spa Junkie so really knows her stuff. After reviewing and writing about many facials and procedures, a lot of which she found to be unsatisfactory and only 'masked' over the issue, she decided to go back to basics.

3- FaceGym uses ancient massage techniques from centuries ago, popular in Chinese culture, but they haven't gone completely vintage! Combining it with modern impact ultrasounds, radiofrequency and specific serums created by Inge herself, the facial hits target areas; including hydration, sculpting, lymph drainage, and acne lift. There is also beauty-boosting facemasks to go with these.

4- There are around 50 muscles in the face alone and it takes 43 to frown, with a leisurely 17 to smile, and all that daily usage is prone to sagging especially as we age. That's not to say happy people don't sag, but with different exercises the whole face can be kept toned and firm.
As with any workout, it's all about the maintenance and Inge recommends regular sessions.

5- Massaging, knuckling and plucking the marie antoinette lines, buccal cheeks, mouth and chin are the main targeted areas with FaceGym. I daren't tell my lovely therapist Jessie that it was much needed as I had been to a birthday party the night before and had had a couple of glasses of champagne (naughty I know). But when leaving Selfridges beauty bar no one would have known as the hydration was fully restored and I had quite a few comments on it's instant glow! No one knew I'd been out on the razzle dazzle!

© Mark Albertsen

6-Toxins are also released in this workout facial. The Lymphatic Drain can detox the complexion; this is done by stimulating the lymph system which moves fluid out of your tissues into lymph nodes where bacteria, viruses and microorganisms are destroyed.

7- Just like your body holds tension so does your face. It's hard not to make facial expressions when your stressed or running around trying to do a zillion tasks, but FaceGym eases that so you look and feel healthy. I almost fell asleep at one point especially when she located the stress points and stretched my neck!

8- FaceGym is not just for women, they even have The Chairman Workout, a gentleman's best friend with beard trimming and deep sonic cleanse included. Its prices also can fit one's budget, ranging from £35 for 30 minutes and upward.

9- Their facial menu is to die for. Just like you would at a gym (or a restaurant) you can pick the workout and scrumptious creams to go with it. I tried the Holiday Express facial which included workout, lymph draining, face gym lift, radiofrequency, impact ultrasound, collagen boost and power serum to finish.
With names such as The Jet Lag Cure and The Hollywood Lunchtime lift, how could one resist?

10- The FaceGym techniques were invented to build strength. I am a big advocate of going makeup free and with the glow afterwards, you will definitely dare to bare!
Inge consulted queen of facials Sarah Chapman and acupuncturist Robert Klein to create the ultimate in unique face workouts.

Tokyo Fashion Week: Japanese Designer Takafumi Tsuruta Shows The World What A Diverse Catwalk Looks Like

The fashion industry's attempts to embrace greater diversity have often been accused of tokenism, but that certainly wasn't the case at the tenbo spring/summer 2016 show at Tokyo Fashion Week.

Models in wheelchairs and with canes took to the catwalk on 13 October, alongside transgender models and models of varying ages, proving the long-held idea that models have to be a certain shape or size is a myth.

"It is just natural for me that there are models with different personalities," said designer Takafumi Tsuruta, according to ShinyShiny.

"You may think such a world is like a utopia, but it is the real world we live in. I want to showcase it through fashion."

Tenbo's brand mission statement is to create clothes that are inclusive of "all people of the world".

As well as challenging the lack of diversity seen on other catwalks Tsuruta's show also had a political theme:

"The theme is 1945," Tsuruta said, when asked to sum up his 2016 spring/summer collection.

"It is a tough subject, but I thought I can express it through fashion."

Diversity At Fashion Week: 79% Of Models At The Spring/Summer 2016 Shows Were White

$

A report into the diversity of models walking the runway at the spring/summer 2016 Fashion Weeks has revealed that 79.4% of the models were white.

Chelsey Jay of Models Of Diversity, told HuffPost UK Style she was saddened but not surprised by the finding.

"It truly is disappointing that year after year the fashion industry continues to prove that it may be current in terms of looks on the runway, but is not current when it comes to its old fashion, dated vision on inclusion," said Jay.

"It is so damaging to society that the industry still allows for white dominance on the runway.

"People being fed this in media will, without even realising it, in their mind place people of colour on a lower platform then white people, because that is what is being filtered to them as 'the norm' with this disgraceful tokenistic injustice."

Models at London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2016

Business of Fashion (BoF) looked at a "representative sample" of catwalk shows this September and surveyed 117 key shows from New York, London, Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks.

They found that of the 3,875 model bookings made during these four weeks, only 797 were "models of colour" (categorised as black, Asian, non-white Hispanic and "other" - including those of Indian and Middle Eastern descent).

Black models were the highest represented minority, accounting for 10.2% of bookings, followed by Asian models at 6.5%, "other" models at 2.3% and Hispanic models at 1.6%.

BoF points out that this is actually an improvement over last season, - albeit a very small one - when 80% of the models walking the runways were white.

This finding will come as little surprise to many who attended the shows, but will hopefully serve as a reminder to the people booking the models that the audience is taking note of the lack of diversity.

During London Fashion Week HuffPost UK Style reporter Rosy Cherrington spoke to attendees to ask their opinions on the amount of diversity (or lack of it) on the runway and discovered it was an issue many people felt strongly about.

As HuffPost UK executive editor Poorna Bell said: "Surely the whole point about catwalk shows which is to inspire, transcend and turn fashion into art that literally walks, is that it should not be tethered or affected by something like the colour of a person's skin?

"The main barrier to change is people giving excuses as to why this is and continuing to hide behind them.

"Because honestly, in this wonderfully diverse age, when people from all colours, sizes and orientations move more freely in the world, and when you have someone as respected as Naomi Campbell who has been modeling since the 80s saying this isn't right, then what excuse really is there to not change?"

The latest Business of Fashion figures may show there's still a lot of work to be done for Fashion Weeks to fully embrace diversity, however HuffPost blogger and image researcher Lou Mensah believes there is cause to be optimistic:

"Although the BoF report indicates that there may be some way to go, I think that the diversity innovation process has begun," she says.

"The debate surrounding diversity is increasing each season, and it is crucial that the fashion industry keeps up by reflecting more than one narrow aspirational body and skin type as the ideal.

"Let's remain positive. Change takes time, but I am hopeful that with passionate trailblazers within the diversity movement continuing to work hard to highlight the need for change, I think that we will see a truer reflection of society on the catwalks in the near future."

Victoria Beckham Flashes Bling Ring And Rocks Monochrome Trend On German Vogue Cover

Victoria Beckham has landed herself another Vogue cover.

The 41-year-old proudly displays a rather large rock on her wedding finger, as she strikes an unusual pose with her left hand in front of her face for Vogue Germany's most recent issue.

Reportedly having 13 engagement rings worth £4 million, we assume this was one of Beckham's favourites and it was obviously worthy of a front cover.

The photo was revealed not long after Beckham slammed recent rumours that her marriage was in trouble.

Beckham was also eager to share behind-the-scene snaps of the shoot with her Instagram followers.

"Loved working with #BooGeorge for @voguegermany November cover," she wrote in a photo caption.

In one shot, Beckham can be seen wearing a tailored white shirt with black braces and high-waisted trousers, her hair blown moodily across her face.

Beckham also shared a behind-the-scenes video, in which she wears a high-waisted black skirt with her white shirt, and rocks black on black with a wintery coat and bag.

Basically, we're all coveting a monochrome wardrobe right now - it would certainly make picking an outfit in the morning easier.

An Instagram artist has highlighted the changing faces of three of the Kardashian-Jenner sisters.

The time-lapse videos, which feature a Photoshopped doctor's syringe on the faces of the reality TV stars, were created by a user known as Saint Hoax.

Despite some seemingly dramatic changes, the short clips themselves appear to have no other purpose other than to scrutinise the looks of the women.

Chanel Mademoiselle Prive Saatchi Gallery Launch: Cara Delevingne and Rita Ora Toughen Up Tulle And Feathers

Cara Delevingne and Rita Ora mixed soft feminine fabrics with sharp styling at the launch of the Saatchi gallery's Chanel exhibition.

The gallery opened its doors for the grand opening on Monday 12 October, which saw Karl Lagerfeld taking in the display alongside Vanessa Paradis, Lily Rose Depp, Daisy Lowe, Georgia May Jagger, Lara Stone and Lily Allen to name but a few.

chanel

The Mademoiselle Prive exhibition celebrates the history of the iconic brand through the eras of both Coco Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld.

It spans three floors of the Saatchi Gallery and features Chanel's stunning haute couture pieces alongside the fashion house's re-issued 1932 "Bijoux de Diamants" high jewellery collection - the only jewellery ever created by Coco Chanel in 1932.

According to Lagerfeld there is one person who wouldn't be too pleased to see Coco's designs alongside his own.

He told ITV that Coco "would have hated" what he had done with the brand.

He added that she was "never very nice" to other designers and so he was rather relieved that she never had chance to criticise him, - as he took over the helm some 12 years after her death.

A photo posted by CHANEL (@chanelofficial) on

Lagerfeld brushed off questions about his "moral responsibility" as a leading light in the fashion industry, saying he was merely concerned with giving people "something pleasant to look at" amidst all the trouble in the world.

The exhibition is open to the public - for free - from today until the 1st November. More information can be found at saatchigallery.com.

Pixiwoo Autumn/Winter Makeup Tips: Vlogging Duo On Popular Trends And Their Beauty Idols

Autumn is officially upon us and now the days are getting darker, so are the colours in our makeup bag

We spoke to vlogging duo Pixiwoo to see what beauty buys they're pining over this season... because if they love them, we're pretty sure we will, too.

Think stand-out lips, bold brows and glossy eyes. Here's what Sam and Nic Chapman had to say...

A photo posted by Sam Chapman (@pixiwoos) on

What five autumn/winter 15 beauty trends do you think are going to be the most popular?

1. Red lip - Every year we see this and it just never seems to get old.

A photo posted by Sam Chapman (@pixiwoos) on

2. Black liner - Black liner is back again (did it ever go away?) Even if you have hooded eyes you can still rock black liner, as it's not all about the flick this season it's just the make the lashes look fuller.

3. Bold brows - Brows are still big and bold but they shouldn't be so perfectly drawn on that they don't look real - just make them look naturally thicker.

4. Blusher rather than contour - The over contour has finally gone (well at least for high fashion it has), its all about the 90s blusher now.

5. Perfect matte skin with a touch of strobing - Every autumn/winter we see matte skin showing its face and why not? This season it's with a touch of highlighter on the tops of the cheeks.

Nic, how would you say your personal makeup style differs from Sam's?

I like a much more polished 90s look than Sam, she has a far more Kate Moss style than me.

I love Victoria Beckham and Jourdan Dunn but at the moment we are both loving Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence.

They both look like the coolest girls that don't take themselves too seriously. Beauty is on the inside too and theres shines through.

Which were your favourite spring/summer 2016 beauty looks at London Fashion Week?

I loved a lot of the shows Balmain, Burberry, Chloe, Roberto Cavalli and many more all went for the gorgeous skin and brows with minimal make up and it was beautiful.

Topshop Uniques went all out with glossy eyes and red lips. I loved them all, but I think spring summer is all about minimal in my heart of hearts.

What new products launching this autumn are you most excited about?

I cannot get excited by all the brown and berry lips (I feel like every single brand is launching the same colours this season).

I remember them being popular in the nineties and it's making me feel really old! Suqqu have a beautiful Bordeaux liner which I'm obsessing about, this colour looks so flattering on all eye colours.

I also love the YSL Limited editions. The Kiss & Love collection is adorable, the lipsticks are imprinted with tiny little lips and No.13 Le Orange is a stunning and very stylish colour.

Now THIS is a Monday morning lipstick! @yslbeauty Kiss & Love edition in No13 Le Orange £26:00

There is a big debate about diversity in beauty and fashion at the moment. What do you think the industries need to do to become more inclusive?

Quite simply, the beauty brands need to stop making the odd token gesture product to appease those at both ends of the spectrum. In particular for darker skin tones, one to three shades is not an adequate shade selection.

Pixiwoo will be speaking at Stylist Live, a four-day event taking place in Islington on 15-18 October 2015. For more information visit live.stylist.co.uk.

London Fashion Week - Sustainable Fashion

It may be a couple of seasons since we sadly lost trail blazing showcase Esthetica and my favorite place to be found during LFW, but it's pioneering spirit lives on. Amongst the sustainable stylings on offer this LFW were brands that stem from the Esthetica fold, alongside innovative new labels that are carrying the torch for the next generation of conscious brands. Here's my pick from London Fashion Week S/S16.

The breakthrough brand
Christopher Raeburn

Fresh from being crowned 'Breakthrough Designer of the Year' at the GQ Men of the Year Awards, Christopher Raeburn's Womenswear collection SARAWAK, inspired by female explorers and the jungle territory of Borneo, felt like his most feminine vision to date. Alongside his signature parachute inspired outerwear, Raeburn gave us beautiful featherlight dresses with sheer panels in naturally died silk, developed by Vanners, one of the few remaining silk mills in the UK.
The jungle vibes extend to his accessories and fans of Raeburn's animal bags will be delighted to hear the new addition to the menagerie is an adorable Orangutan! This collection also sees Raeburn teaming up with classic British brand Clarks to launch a debut footwear collection. Head to toe Raeburn for summer, what could be better!

The NEWGEN designer
Faustine Steinmetz

Continuing her fascination of reworking everyday staples of our wardrobe,
designer Faustine Steinmetz took denim jackets, sweatshirts and dresses and painstakingly remade them into an oversized, pleated, flower emblazoned collection. Surrealist Salvador Dali's inspiration abounded with the presentation trapping disembodied models in walls, arms and legs poking through inviting the guests to focus on the intricate craftsmanship and construction of the garments. Steinmetz's traditional approach to craftsmanship sees her hand weaving all her fabric in her east London studio and this season she also worked with Spanish denim mill, Royo, recycling old jeans to create her own upcycled pleated and shredded denim. This is cool, contemporary slow fashion at it's best, a proverbial tortoise to fast fashion's hare. She's one to watch.

The Knitwear Designer
Katie Jones
Knitwear designer Katie Jones presented another master class in how to upcycle with abandon, showcasing a riotous collection that was so colorful it blew her previous 'Granny Takes a Trip' out of the water. A Central Saint Martins graduate, Jones worked for John Galliano, Diane Von Furstenberg and Mark Fast before launching her label in 2014, showcasing as one of Estethica's Emerging Talents. Katie's passion for upcycling drives her brand but it is her playful sense of humor and kaleidoscopic use of colour that radiate throughout her collections that makes these pieces so special. Uber Blogger, Susie Bubble is a fan and Selfridges have just snapped up the collection, so watch out, the colourful star in on the rise.

A personal favorite is the Lipstick Print. Inspired by a Guy Bourdin advert in French Vogue, it was created in the 60's but still manages to look effortlessly modern. All the pieces are hand-woven and block printed.
Dame Zandra Rhodes comments: "We went for very simple garment shapes that can be both dressed up or dressed down and really show off the printed patterns that we have carefully chosen."

They will be available from People Tree.co.uk as early as February 2016.

Why Gender Neutral Clothing Can Harm Girls

$
0
0
With an explosion of gender neutral lines for kids & babies* have you ever wondered who these clothes are really benefiting? There is it turns out a dirty truth in the supply chain of some 'gender neutral' clothing: the empowerment of girls in the west on the back of the misery of the world's poorest women and girls.

Clothing is, at its Heart, a Business Propelled by Women & Girls

The garment industry is comprised of about 75% women. Clothing production is a complex process and women are heavily involved in all stages, including the growing of cotton, picking, cleaning, milling, spinning into thread, weaving or knitting into fabric, dying, printing, cutting, sewing, checking, labelling, packaging and sending. And most of this occurs in the developing world. The primary consumers of clothing (by volume of clothing purchased) are also women.

Women & Girls also Pay the Price for Cheap Clothing and Large Profits

Clothing may be a basic need, or even a pleasurable pastime, but it is also big business. A business that requires very low staff overheads, large & rapid production volumes in order to maintain very significant profit margins. It is not a model that lends itself to ethical business practice and female workers shoulder the burden of the model. In this industry (in developing countries where most clothing is made) pay is very low and hours are long (90 hour weeks during peak seasons), basic worker safety is not a requirement, the right to bargain collectively does not exist, sick leave, pregnancy leave, or maternity leave unheard off. Women are paid less for doing the same job, and are barred from the senior roles. Sexual harassment is unchecked, female children are often found working long hours for virtually no pay doing 'outsourced work' such as sewing on sequins. Forced labour in cotton mills is not uncommon in cultures where young women with little or no education need to first save a large dowry (payment) to obtain a marriage and subsequent economic security. In developing countries clothing brands are simply taking advantage of a lack of employment legislation, or a lack of enforcement of it, including any gender equity laws, to keep their costs very low. But locally made is not a panacea, because in developed countries clothing companies also profit from gender inequality - salaries being significantly lower in female dominated industries (like cutting and sewing) than in the equivalently skilled male dominated industries.

So in what has to be one of the great (but not greatest) ironies of fashion, the clothing industry which is predominantly propped up by a female consumer base, survives and thrives on the wide scale exploitation of other women.

Clothing Design and Marketing Reeks of Gender Inequality

It is not just in the making of clothes that women pay a heavy price. Recently there has been greater recognition that children's toys and clothing play a critical role in reinforcing the stereotyped messages of gender. Children's clothing is overwhelming designed and marketed in a way that tells girls to be pretty girlfriends, interested only in make-up and kittens; exploring science, business, trades and technology is out of bounds. For boys the messaging focusses on transport and science and reinforces the idea that caring and nurturing roles are a no no. The messaging contained in clothing simply reinforces for children the many other gender based divisions present in our society.

Given the issues both in the clothing production chain and in the marketing of kids clothing, gender inequality can ONLY be addressed by a focus on women's empowerment throughout the clothing production chain. BUT it is not.

GAP recently launched a range of gender neutral clothing for "girls who know being a girl means being anything you want", but given that GAPs gets a 'D Grade' for workers' rights' in their countries of operation, clearly it is only some girls GAP wants to help be anything they want. Those others, who they need for their profit margins, well GAP is not really interested in their potential. While some argue that being employed in the clothing industry is better than no employment at all for many young women, this is a nonsense argument that would have all unethical business practice, and violations of human rights in workplaces remain unchecked. Because really getting killed on the job due to your companies' cut price business model, being subject to constant sexual violence, being bound to indentured labour contracts, being locked into your workplace 24 hours a day for three year terms, is, it turns out not really doing much for the empowerment of poorer women.

What Can be Done?

When clothing companies with opaque supply chains and a fast fashion model start offering their 'gender neutral or unisex' kids clothes (which many other are jumping on) as a solution to the problems of gender inequity and female exploitation in the world, we should all laugh very very loudly and point out their complicity in creating & maintaining the problem in the first place. Then we should turn around and buy our kids clothing from places like Freedom Kids, Jack and Jill Kids, DUNS of Sweden and muka kids, small ethical businesses who understand that empowering girls (and boys) in the developed world can be done while also empowering their counterparts in the developing world through ethical, more transparent clothing supply chains. In addition, we should ask brands hard questions about their supply chains, ask them to prove with independently verified documentation and data (not pretty words) exactly how they making their production more ethical, more fair and better for women & girls.

* As the term indicates 'gender neutral or unisex' clothes for kids is clothing designed to be, completely neutral of any indicators of gender. No stereotypical gender based slogans, imagery or messages, the clothing is not marketed as being a particular gender, and the cut of the clothing means it can be worn by all children. Interestingly, until around 8 years boys and girls have the same body shape and size, so differences in clothing shape & size are entirely unnecessary physically. The terms are also used (somewhat oxymoronically) for clothing free of stereotypical 'feminine' messages marketed only at girls.

Jess Berentson-Shaw founded Muka kids' to make ethical & sustainable clothing more accessible. Muka kids has a marketplace to trade preloved organic, ethical & sustainable clothing. Through its partnerships with accredited brands it also helps make new sustainable clothing more affordable. Sales on the marketplace fund a micro finance scheme for women cotton farmers in India trying to pull themselves out of poverty.

One man went to some very organised lengths to prove his girlfriend wrong after she told him all hist-shirts were the same colour.

Imgur user Whoisnottwo posted the photo below yesterday with the caption: "Girlfriend is always telling me my shirts are the same colour. I had to prove her wrong."

View post on imgur.com

The photo has already racked up over 3million views and almost 800 comments, but the reactions so far have been pretty varied.

Some commenters could definitely relate to the situation...

"Are you...my boyfriend?"

"She's right, they're all blue."

Some loved the range of hues...

"50 shades of green/blueish-something."

"They reflect the many moods, the many shades, the many sides... of whoisnotwo. He calls this one; "Morning mist."

But some just couldn't get over the arrangement...

"The fact some colours need to be swapped around for a true gradient is driving me insane"

"You just couldn't switch those bottom two???"

These people had an alternative theory though...

"Plot twist: She's colourblind."

"Plot twist: The shirts are rainbow colored and we're all colourblind."

Whoisnottwo is yet to reveal what his girlfriend thought of the whole thing, but props to the the dude for knowing what suits him and sticking to it.

As if the next-level celebrity outfits we can expect from the theme aren't exciting enough, it's also been announced that Taylor Swift and Idris Elba will be co-hosting the event along with fashion industry icons Anna Wintour and Jonathan Ive.

Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld, and Miuccia Prada will also serve as honorary chairs.

According to Vogue, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute exhibit, which the gala celebrates, "will focus on the dichotomy between handmade haute couture and machine-made fashion."

Body-Shamed Model Writes Open Letter To The Fashion Industry

A fashion and beauty model has written a powerful open letter to her critics after being body shamed.

Charli Howard claims she was dropped by her top modelling agency for being "too big" and "out of shape" to work in the industry, despite being 5'8" and a UK size 6-8.

The London-born model, who has shot campaigns for Rankin, Rodial and Ciaté, along with editorials for magazines like Harper's Bazaar and Glamour, took to Facebook to publicly share her experience.

"I will no longer allow you to dictate to me what's wrong with my looks and what I need to change in order to be 'beautiful' (like losing one inch off my hips), in the hope it might force you to find me work," she wrote.

"I refuse to feel ashamed and upset on a daily basis for not meeting your ridiculous, unobtainable beauty standards."

charli howard

Howard, who has chosen not to name her former agency, also made an important point that the more models are forced to lose weight, the more designers will make clothes to fit smaller sizes, stating that being "ill" not an image she wants to represent.

"In case you hadn't realised, I am a woman. I am human. I cannot miraculously shave my hip bones down, just to fit into a sample size piece of clothing or to meet 'agency standards'," she wrote.

"I have fought nature for a long time, because you've deemed my body shape too 'curvaceous', but I have recently begun to love my shape. I don't have big boobs, but my bum is ok plus, a large majority of my clients are ok with this."

charli howard

Howard also revealed that even when she weighed seven and a half stone, hitting the gym for five hours a week, she "still wasn't thin enough" for her agency.

Howard concluded by writing that she loves modelling and will continue to do it, but only on her terms.

"My mental and physical health is of more importance than a number on a scale, however much you wish to emphasise this."

"Until (and if) an agency wishes to represent me for myself, my body and the WOMAN I've become, give me a call. Until then, I'm off to Nandos."

charli howard

Speaking to HuffPost UK Style, Howard revealed she hopes her story will help change the way models are treated by their agencies.

"I've been modelling since I was 17 and had very little self confidence anyway, so when you are feeling low in yourself, you just become accustomed to people telling you what's wrong with you and being mean," she said.

"But I think an interesting change is happening in the industry - Cara Delevigne and Ashley Graham have really brought to light agencies' treatment of models."

Howard also said she thinks social media sites like Instagram and apps like Swipecast will act as modelling agents in the future, as clients are more inclined to book through them due to the lack of agency fees.

"More and more models are proving that you can be more than just a face, it's a great time to just be yourself," she said.

Howard is not the only one calling for change in the fashion industry - supermodel Gigi Hadid recently spoke out against her body-shamers, while model Rosie Nelson started a petition to to create a law to protect people in the fashion industry from the pressure to be "dangerously skinny", which has gained the support of MP Caroline Noakes.

Eight Bad Lifestyle Choices that Compromise Hair Health

$

Bad lifestyle choices definitely affect the condition of your hair. Copious amounts of medical studies unquestionably prove that apart from genetics and biological causes such as fluctuating hormone levels, the big culprit to hair damage takes the form of bad lifestyle choices. Thanks to a wider dissemination of medical information, more and more people can no longer ignore the medical facts that show altering one's lifestyle could lead to better hair and overall health. The growing awareness, especially among the younger generation, has fortunately brought about more serious considerations about lifestyle choices as an undeniable aspect of healthy and beautiful hair.

How your lifestyle affects your hair depends on how good or bad your daily habits are. Here are eight of the bad hair-damaging habits you might be guilty of doing, which could lead to hair loss. Read up to learn more about the bad effects of your daily habits on your hair. Educate yourself to overturn hair damage and loss, and remain on track to becoming a healthier and more attractive version of yourself.

1. Smoking

Hair loses its lustre and robustness as we age. It is part of the natural biological cycle of humans. However, smoking can accelerate the aging process, which could most likely lead to early balding in both men and women.

According to a study conducted by Ralph M. Trüeb, a medical professional who co-edited the authoritative book Aging Hair published in 2010, there are multi-factorial mechanisms concerning the effects of smoking to hair loss. One of these effects involves the process by which smoking damages the dermal hair papilla. The study concludes that smoking-induced damage to the DNA of the hair follicle could eventually lead to hair loss.

In this light, the effects of hair loss on human health can be clearly alleviated with a simple, yet for some people understandably difficult, lifestyle change: quitting the habit of smoking.

2. Stressing too much
2015-10-13-1444714972-9675043-worriedgirl413690_640.jpg

As part of the biological makeup of the human body, hair is quite sensitive to any changes that occur internally. Any inside biological disturbance, therefore, poses a threat that could lead to dull and thinning hair. Stressing too much affects the immune system and is one serious cause of a compromised crowning glory.

As defined in medical literature, the common form of hair loss caused by stress is called Telogen Effluvium. Stress in this condition forces the hair follicles to go into "resting phase" mode. In some individual cases, hair suddenly falls out even with mere brushing or washing!

Stressful things you do that make your hair damaged include a number of things, from excessive worrying to refusing to take a breather in the midst of a busy schedule. With the built-in stress that comes with our hectic modern lives, choosing to be a bit more relaxed can have positive effects to keeping and making your hair healthy.

3. Taking insufficient vitamins

If you are truly vitamin deficient, which could be determined accurately by a blood test, chances are the condition of your hair is visibly affected. Zinc and iron are some of the common vitamins related to hair health. Getting a sufficient amount of these nutrients can bring back the density of your hair.

A warning, though: the market is saturated with bold claims about reversing hair damage with excessive taking of supplements. You would think that if these claims were all true, then there should be no balding person to see anywhere in the world. Obviously, the case is quite the opposite. The reason for this is that there are a lot of unsubstantiated claims about vitamin deficiency and hair loss, compounded by the lack of related hair experiments performed on people in an appropriate and independent study.

Vitamin deficiency can be a concrete cause of hair loss, but avoid the urge of doing "self-treatments" by taking many vitamins in pill form.

5. (Not) eating healthy
2015-10-13-1444715158-2876464-17200661946_c698038429_b.jpg

Prevalent effects of a damaged hair on one's well-being include the dreaded blow to one's confidence and even depression. The good news is reversing hair damage, and by extension improving overall health, is achievable with something as easy and practical as following a healthy diet. Incidentally, recent reports show that there is a positive trend among younger consumers gearing toward healthy eating habits.

But don't be too hasty in concluding that a healthy diet can only mean having vegetables and fruits. Although there is a huge debate on the matter - with notable Hollywood-based vegetarian Kimberly Snyder arguing for a plant-based diet - that incorporating healthy sources of nutrients from animal products can help with hair restoration.

For her part, Lisa Caddy, a London-based certified trichologist (hair medical professional), warns that ferritin deficiency can badly affect hair growth. Ferritin is especially found in abundance in red meats and is a form of stored iron essential for human bodies to manufacture hair cell protein.

Whether you follow a plant-based diet or eat animal meat, ensuring that you have a general healthy diet can spell the difference between having a bad and good hair day.

4. Depriving yourself of sleep

Getting a good night's sleep is a sure-fire way to keep our health at an optimum level. Many doctors recommend a seven- to eight-hour snooze session. Bad sleeping habits negatively affect the body and this could manifest in the condition of the hair. How so? Lack of sleep weakens the body's ability to absorb nutrients, which are very essential for hair health. A weak body results in weak and damaged hair. Ensuring you get the recommended amount of sleep will not only enable you to avoid having unhealthy hair. It will also allow you to avoid being unhealthy, pure and simple.

6. Harsh salon treatments
2015-10-13-1444715192-3782278-barber378816_640.jpg
Photo courtesy of Mrkkn via Pixabay

Have you ever experienced losing hair after a salon treatment? If so, you can bet the cause to be the harsh hair procedure you have been subjected to - from coloring and thermal straightening to perming. Harsh salon procedures can cause so much damage that the hair could literally start to fall out during and after the session!

By the same token, at-home styling such as wearing your hair in a very tight ponytail on a regular basis or wearing heavy braids, weaves or extensions can likewise result in serious hair damage and profuse hair loss. If you find yourself losing so much hair, especially along the hairline, then you might want to consider letting your hair down, as the saying goes.

The roots of the hair can only take so many chemicals and added strain from these procedures. You must avoid them at all costs, especially if you are already suffering from hair loss by the handful.

7. Pulling out your hair

More of a psychosocial issue, excessive plucking of the hair characterizes a debilitating condition called Trichotillomania. According to statistics, up to 4 in 100 people can be trichotillomania sufferers. If you are personally going through this problem or know someone who does, then an important intervention measure is to seek medical help. In some cases, psychological treatment and/or counselling can treat the problem. As a supplementary and beneficial measure, hair transplant procedures can restore your hair to its former glory.

8. Ignoring dandruff
Research suggests that not treating your dandruff can potentially lead not only to hair damage but also to hair loss. According to a study published by the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, the ingredient ketoconazole, which is found in some anti-dandruff shampoos, can help in reducing thinning hair. If you do not suffer from dandruff, a general rule of thumb is to choose a shampoo with gentle film-forming agents. A helpful tip to is read the label and find ingredients that include "acrylates" and "copolymers." These shampoos will be gentle enough for everyday use and will make your hair appear like it has more volume because dirt build-up was cleansed out.

Good lifestyle choices is an essential part of healthy, beautiful hair. In some cases, you might consider undergoing treatments, such as hair transplant procedures, if genetics and biological factors are the direct cause of your damaged and thinning hair. But whether or not there is need for you to undergo medical hair treatments, the imperative remains for you to let go of bad lifestyle habits in order to achieve and maintain overall health for your hair and body.

We Are Beautiful No Matter What They Say

Beauty, what is beauty?

Everyday the media bombards ourselves with images of beautiful and often unrealistic looking models, which in hand can put pressure on people and their appearance.

In a world where each and every one of us is beautiful in our own unique way, ask yourself this "do you feel represented in the fashion industry?"

The answer is blunt and simple "NO!"

Where are the disabled models, the models of colour, the plus size models?

They are often used as a gimmick not as a first choice to smile back at you from a billboard.

Thanks to Models Of Diversity change is on it's way.

MOD is a not for profit organisation set up by Angel Sinclair after appearing on Gok Wan's TV show Naked Beauty.

Angel noticed the array of different types of beauty and how this is not represented in the fashion industry and made it her mission to change the way beauty is perceived.

MOD holds major catwalks and hits the streets with petitions to help change the fashion industry.

Now if you missed out on the MOD catwalk show last Saturday don't fear as I have all the info after luckily being asked to take part and model!

Gracing the catwalk, we were blessed with Big Brothers sweetheart Gail Porter, Gogglebox babe Sandy Channer and not forgetting the beautiful and inspirational Vicky Balch, only four months after the tragic Alton Towers incident.

2015-10-14-1444807501-2288944-image.jpg

The energy behind the scenes was electric.

The team were all excited about the show with a real sense of family, which I am privileged to be a part of.

A personal plus for the day was having my daughter Tianii, (age three) by my side as she was also taking to the catwalk representing the little divas in the world!

What I love about a MOD show is the variety of models that are used, children, disabled, mature, models of colour, the list goes on.

Every model chosen represents the buying public, this is how it should be.

One perk of the day was make-up time by the Michael Perks make up artistry team I went from drab to fab with a tap of their magical skills to make me catwalk ready!

It's nearly show time, the crowds start gathering in Shepherds Bush busy market ready for a catwalk like no other.

The beautiful Gail Porter starts the show in a Grecian goddess floor length gown, the crowd went wild and the photographers all fighting for the perfect shot.

When it came to my turn to rock the runway I was more than ready to show my size 12 curves off to the crowd in a sheer top and high wasted skirt, I loved every minute of it.

The cheers from the crowd and the amazing energy was a true sign of what the public like, that is diversity and real people who they can relate to.

We had the lovely Sandy Channer sashaying down the runway to adoring fans, wowing them in a red knockout dress, Jessica rabbit eat your heart out.

Vicky Balch makes her first catwalk debut, sporting glittery crutches, a natural and a real hit.
Its amazing how far she has come in such little time, a true inspiration and a beautiful young lady.

If having a catwalk full of fit guys and girls wasn't enough, a performance by Stedman wowed the crowds, followed by some amazing dance acts!

The show was a massive success, all thanks to Angel and her team.

2015-10-14-1444807594-3137596-image.jpg

By opening up people's minds of what is beautiful, we hope to make a change and impact this on the fashion industry.

MOD are currently holding a petition, one in six people are disabled and we feel this should be reflected in the models that are used.

Please take a look and sign, make a difference today and help shape the future of fashion
