Another Magazine Commits Blackface, Stop The Madness! (PHOTO)

For the ten millionth time: STOP PAINTING WHITE PEOPLE BLACK!

We were hoping we wouldn't see another instance of Blackface in 2013 -- or the rest of all eternity, for that matter -- but thanks to Metal magazine that sadly isn't the case.

SCROLL DOWN FOR PHOTO

In this latest example of racially insensitive debauchery, the Barcelona-based publication painted male model Abel Van Oeveren's face entirely black for it's "Transmission" feature in the Fall/Winter 2013 issue. The editorial, which was shot by Johnny Dufort and styled by John Colver, gives no indication as to why they opted for the paint job -- although there is never a valid excuse for the offensive act.

Nevertheless, the fashion industry (and beyond) can't seem to resist bronzing, painting and dipping themselves in a darker hue.

In 2013 alone we saw Vogue Netherlands and Numéro magazine produce Blackface features. And we definitely can't forget fashion designer Allesandro Dell’Acqua and Elle France's beauty editor, Jeanne Deroo, dressing up in minstrel-inspired ensembles.

Just make it STOP!

When 2013 hit, the world was already smitten with Kate Middleton. But that didn't mean the Duchess of Cambridge couldn't have yet another banner year.

Between giving birth to the future King of England and bravely playing volleyball in a pair of sky-high wedges, Kate cemented her place in our hearts as the most glamorous yet down-to-earth royal out there... and here are 17 photos to prove it.

Mila Kunis And Ashton Kutcher Spotted At Iowa-Penn State Wrestling Match

It looks like Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis might be spending the holidays in Iowa again this year.

On Saturday (Dec. 21), the couple was spotted watching a wrestling match between Kutcher's alma mater, University of Iowa, and Penn State, while surprised fans snapped photos of the two:

Kutcher and Kunis spent the holidays last year in Kutcher's hometown of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and it looks like they might spend Christmas with Kutcher's family again.

With Kutcher's divorce from Demi Moore finally finalized, the actor has been more open about his relationship with Kunis. The former "That '70s Show" co-stars began dating in April 2012, and there have long been rumors the two are ready to make things more official in the new year.

The 24 Pieces That Should Be Required Reading For Women From 2013

Thought-provoking, hilarious, heart-wrenching writing by women was everywhere this year -- despite some suggestions to the contrary. So for the second year in a row we've curated a list of pieces we felt reflected some of the most insightful female voices of the year.

To make the list, a piece had to be published this calendar year and be available online. It had to have inspired debate, conversation and awe, both at our office and on social media. No list can possibly capture all the terrific writing by and about women, but we hope that this one inspires you to take a look (or look again) at some true gems.

I’m Daisy Coleman, The Teenager At The Center Of The Maryville Rape Media Storm, And This Is What Really Happened
Daisy Coleman, xoJane

When she was 14 years old, Daisy Coleman, a varsity cheerleader from Maryville, Mo., was sexually assaulted by a popular high school football player while she was passed out -- and then tossed in her snowy front yard in freezing temperatures. Despite strong evidence, charges against her assailant were dropped. After months of press coverage, and a Twitter campaign launched by Anonymous (#Justice4Daisy), Coleman spoke out for the first time. “I'm different now, and I can't ever go back to the person I once was,” she wrote. “That one night took it all away from me. I'm nothing more than just human, but I also refuse to be a victim of cruelty any longer. This is why I am saying my name. This is why I am not shutting up.”

In My Head, I'm Always Thin
Daphne Merkin, Elle

"In admitting to being overweight, I feel like I’m admitting to something truly heinous," writes Merkin, an author who is not exactly shy about opening up -- she's written unflinchingly about her battles with depression and in a famous New Yorker piece revealed her love of S& M. But fat, it turns out, is more taboo. Merkin's brilliant meditation on appetite, invisibility, and the ways we often delude ourselves when we look in the mirror will resonate with any woman who has struggled with body image issues. "I don’t see myself ... with quite the same piercing clarity, the same objectifying gaze as I imagine others do," she writes. "Because it would be too painful and, at its most extreme, lead to my never leaving the house for fear of public scrutiny."

Dig Deep: Beyond Lean In
bell hooks, The Feminist Wire

Though we generally see Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In as the catalyst for an important conversation about women in the workplace, hooks' critique of Sandberg's white, moneyed, privileged perspective is a must-read for anyone interested in having a larger dialogue about these issues. "Instead of creating a space of female solidarity, Sandberg exists as the lone queen amid millions of admires," she writes. Writers like hooks inspire us to start talking.

What's Wrong With Me?
Meghan O'Rourke, The New Yorker

This harrowing account of the author's mysterious autoimmune illness is also an exploration of the serious limitations of a health care system that often treats young female patients as the ‘worried well.’”

The Fairy Godmother of Rock
Jada Yuan, New York Magazine

This masterful profile of the Witchy Woman showed us that Stevie Nicks offstage -- in all of her complicated, neurotic, feminine glory -- is everything we always thought she was and more. Yuan hung out with Nicks for hours (jealous) and captured her singular outlook and charm. This is one of the most entertaining and insightful portraits we read this year. J-school students take note: This is how it's done.

I'm Not Ambitious, And That's OK
Elissa Strauss, Salon

Strauss reminds us that while it's all well and good to strive for career and financial success, perhaps it's important to strive for sanity as well.

The Opt-Out Generation Wants Back In
Judith Warner, The New York Times Magazine

In 2003, Lisa Belkin wrote a controversial New York Times Magazine cover story called “The Opt Out Revolution” about a small group of educated and affluent women who were leaving high powered careers to stay home with their children. A decade later, Judith Warner caught up with a different cohort of women who had “opted out” and found that while most didn’t regret having had time with their children, being out of the workforce resulted in financial insecurity, marital discord and great difficulty reestablishing a career.

Women Are Bitches
KMA Sullivan, The Rumpus

Sullivan writes about the “exhausting” and “relentless” misogyny that exists in the literary circles she travels in “from men who are otherwise kind and educated, who would never think of themselves as chauvinist assholes.” Sullivan suspects that these “reasonably aware and well-intentioned” men harbor sexist attitudes that create room for “unreasonable, ignorant assholes to say and do what most of us (men and women alike) would deem shockingly destructive.”

The Barbecue
Margaret Wheeler Johnson, HuffPost Weddings

Many a bride-to-be has written about the stress and insanity of wedding planning. But Wheeler Johnson's take on the lead-up to her Big Day is among the best we've ever read.

Your Friends And Rapists
Sarah Nicole Prickett, Medium

In this meandering (in the best sense of the word) piece at about the author's rape at age 19, she turns the lens on herself -- but also on the "dick culture" that encourages (and often finds funny) pictures of passed out young women who have been raped. (See: Daisy Coleman, Rehtaaeh Parsons, Steubenville). "I am not interested in what motivates a rapist," Prickett writes. "I am interested in what permits him."

Sunday Sauce, Saving Me
Jessica Valenti, The Toast

In this beautiful essay, Valenti mediates on food, memory, longing and creating family traditions.

Should You Send A Lady A Dick Pic? A Guide For Men
Erin Gloria Ryan, Jezebel

In a pitch-perfect send-off to the Anthony Weiners of the world, Ryan cleverly breaks down all of the possible reasons a man would think to send a dick pic -- and then explains why it's almost always a bad idea.

When Your Brown Body is a White Wonderland
Tressie McMillan Cottom, tressiemc.com

Cottom sets aside discussions about the overt sexiness of Miley Cyrus’ VMAs performance to focus on the less-discussed racial implications of the singer's twerking against a backdrop of curvy, black, female bodies. This essay is not only beautifully-written, but deeply important.

The Perfect Wife
Ariel Levy, The New Yorker

Edith Windsor, the plaintiff in the Supreme Court case which declared the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) unconstitutional, has become a gay rights icon -- and for good reason. This brilliantly-reported profile about her relationship with her wife Thea Spyer and her dogged fight for marriage equality will inspire even the most hard-hearted of readers.

Shine Theory: Why Powerful Women Make Great Friends
Ann Friedman, The Cut

In this terrific piece about "that feeling of resentment rather than joy at the personal and professional achievements of another woman," Friedman not only spoke the truth about this very real and toxic aspect of female relationships, she also proposed a simple and wise way to end it: Women should adapt a "I don't shine if you don't shine" attitude. Befriend accomplished women, Friedman says, and you will get much in return: "The associative property of awesomeness" as well as support and inspiration from a tribe of strong women.

My First Year as a Woman
Laura Jane Grace, Cosmpolitan

"Truth be told though, when it comes to what other people think about me, I say fuck 'em. That's the lesson that I want to impart to my daughter: It doesn't matter what people think of you -- you have to be true to yourself," wrote punk-rocker Grace (formerly known as Tom Gabel), reflecting on the first year of her transition to living as a woman. The rest of the piece is just as bold.

Difficult Women: How 'Sex and the City' lost its good name
Emily Nussbaum, The New Yorker

Nussbaum traces the glittery show so many love to hate these days (or at the very least, mock, and with some good reason) back to its oft-forgotten, revolutionary beginnings. "It originated the unacknowledged first female anti-hero on television: ladies and gentlemen, Carrie Bradshaw," Nussbaum writes. Closet "Sex and the City" fans, behold your vindication.

I Have a Character Issue
Anna Gunn, New York Times

After years of playing sociopathic meth-dealer Walter White's wife, Skyler, on TV, Gunn was all-too-familiar with the shocking amount of vitriol some fans directed at her character -- and by proxy, at the actress herself. "Could it be that they can’t stand a woman who won’t suffer silently or 'stand by her man'?," Gunn wondered, calling out all of the men who love to be angry at fictional (and real-life) women. "That they despise her because she won’t back down or give up? Or because she is, in fact, Walter’s equal?"

Michelle Obama, 'feminist nightmare?' How Lazy Journalism Hurts Feminism
Roxane Gay, Salon

"When can we stop talking about who's a bad feminist?," asks Gay. After reading her piece on the utter ridiculousness of picking apart FLOTUS' feminist and activist credentials, you'll be absolutely sure that time should be now.

You Can Only Hope to Contain Them
Amanda Hess, ESPN

Hess approaches a very real issue for female athletes -- their breasts -- with respect and substantial reporting. Now this is how you write about women's lives without resorting to stereotypes and lazy generalizations.

Why I F**king Love Teenage Girls
Meghan Harper, HuffPost Teen

We had never really thought about what, exactly, makes teenage girls so amazingly complicated. Until Harper broke it down for us. The piece starts out slow but keep going and soak in wisdom like this:"Teenage girls find a buoy for themselves in the sea of emotional ruin, and they hold on tighter than anyone else."

My Abortion
Meaghan Winter, New York Magazine

In their own words, 26 women spoke plainly and powerfully about their varied reasons for choosing to end a pregnancy. Their stories reminded us how often real women get lost in politically motivated debates about abortion.

The Riptide Of Titstare
Rachel Sklar, Linked In

Rachel Sklar connects the dots between a report about the state of the news business authored by three white men (and based on interviews with 61 people, 54 of whom were white men), the unveiling of an app called Titstare at Tech Crunch Disrupt, and the misogynist tweets of former CTO of Business Insider, Pax Dickinson.

Thanksgiving in Mongolia
Ariel Levy, The New Yorker

And finally, almost every person we reached out to for suggestions for this list mentioned Levy's stunning essay about the miscarriage she suffered while traveling abroad. Gripping, intimate, wrenching without one superfluous word or false note, this piece will be studied in memoir writing classes for years to come.

Holiday Party Hairstyles That You Can Totally Do Yourself At Home

Holiday season is in full swing and there are a lot of parties. This makes us ask the age-old question, "What shall I do with my hair?"

So I thought I would help you ladies get flawless holiday hair for every party you attend.

Voluminous Waves

jennifer lopez

My go-to for instant glamour and volume are hot rollers. Start by drying your hair with some mousse like Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Boost and Lift Foaming Air Mouse, as this will help add extra volume but without that crunchy, sticky feel. While drying your hair, make sure you heat up your rollers. (I personally love the T3 voluminous hot rollers set. There are eight rollers and they work perfectly for this style.)

After your hair dries, take a large section of hair near the front of your head and spray it with a little hairspray for hold. Using the smaller roller, wrap your hair around the roller and clip it into place. In terms of placement, you should place one roller on each side of your head, three down the middle and three in the back. Once your entire head is in hot rollers, let them set. (This is the perfect time to do your makeup.)

Remove the hot rollers after they've cooled down and give your curly mane a good brush. You should have J.Lo-worthy hair that's full of bounce, body and waves. To finish this look, set with one of my new favorite beauty finds, Oribe Soft Dry Conditioner. This is great for shine and reducing flyaways.

Sleek Ponytail

freida pinto

Another go-to holiday look that I love is the super slick ponytail. The parting can be on the side, in the middle or just pulled back with no part (think Robert Palmer "Addicted To Love").

The height of the ponytail also changes this style depending on if you choose to go low, middle or high. If you want hair products that will give you that glossy, not greasy look, try Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Color Gloss Creme, Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Oil or Bumble and Bumble Brilliantine.

Messy Updo With A Headband

keira knightley

Another way to make your holiday hair stand out is with a great hair accessory. I love a beehive or French twist with a headband. You can also accessorize a messy, braided updo with a floral headband. I also love a half-up, half-down hairdo with a jeweled barrette. To do this, take the roller set look and pull the front and sides back to the center. Use a barrette to hold in place. Claire's has a great selection of hair accessories that are also affordable.

I hope these holiday hair tips will help you be the belle of the ball. Happy holidays!

9 Outfits That Were Ruined By Bad Makeup

Putting together an amazing outfit when you don't have a wardrobe stylist, makeup artist or hairstylist can be pretty tricky. But for the celebrities with personal glam squads who still miss the mark, we have two words of advice: Fire them.

Why pay someone big bucks to help you get red-carpet ready and end up not looking your absolute best? *Kanye shrug*

From unkempt brows to badly-placed blush to the wrong concealer shade, here are nine instances where the makeup ruined what could have been a great outfit. Learn from these mistakes, ladies!

Zosia Mamet

zosia mamet

It is true that your eyebrows are what frames your face, and when they are poorly filled-in or groomed like Mamet's, it throws everything else off. The "Girls" star's heavy eye makeup and dry, parched hair also distract from her chic floral pants ensemble.

Ginnifer Goodwin

ginnifer goodwin

We love a great jumpsuit, but Goodwin's heavy foundation and bright blush were too much to take in with the graphic black and white print. She would've been good to go with just the winged eyeliner and and purple lip color.

Hailee Steinfeld

hailee steinfeld

This colorful House of Holland dress is a fun and flirty number for the young actress, but she went a bit overboard with the navy smokey eyeshadow that is brushed up to her brow bone.

Emeli Sandé

emeli sande

Sandé's golden complexion looks washed out from wearing a highlighter/concealer shade that's too light. It doesn't help that her face is practically the same color as her blonde hair, and her lower half appears more bronzed because of her red and black minidress.

Hannah Bronfman

hannah bronfman

We love that Bronfman isn't afraid to rock the colored eyebrow runway trend on the red carpet. But it seems haphazard with this pink retro-inspired frock and strappy sandals.

Pixie Geldolf

pixie geldolf

This silver thin strapped dress is super sexy! We just don't understand why the British model and socialite wore it with gray eyeshadow, messy wine lipstick and those gold hoop earrings...

Lil Mama

lil mama

Lil Mama has really turned up the glam in 2013, but the rapper-turned-actress should ditch the neon green hair and spidery false lashes.

Bérénice Marlohe

berenice marlohe

Everything about this red lace ensemble was smoking hot... until we fixed our gaze on Marlohe's matchy eye makeup. The Bond girl could have skipped smudging her eyelids with the hazy red and black hues.

Jada Pinkett Smith

jada pinkett smith

Jada Pinkett Smith's rock-mom approved hair is awesome! What's not so stellar is how her bronze makeup and shaved sides of her head turn into a muddle mess with the gold detailing on her dress.

Imagining North West's First Christmas With Kim Kardashian And Kanye West

$

December 25 will not just be Christmas, it will be North West's very first Christmas Kristmas.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's daughter already enjoys the finer things in life, but knowing how much of a production Kristmas with the Kardashians can be, we couldn't help but let our imaginations run wild envisioning what the day might bring for six-month-old Nori.

Every year, the whole clan sleeps over at the Jenner's Calabasas home (which is convenient for Kimye, since they are living there while their home is being renovated), and as the Kardashian Krismas tradition goes, they wake up at 6 a.m. and unwrap presents, make breakfast, and then they watch basketball. Aw, how sweet.

But, let's go back to the presents for a moment. We know North was gifted some amazing designer baby clothes by some of the biggest names in fashion when her parents went to Paris, so we can only imagine what Santa might bring her for this most festive day:

North West Scores More Expensive Gifts From Kimye's Designer Friends For Christmas

$

0
Christmas came early for Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's six-month-old daughter North, whose closet just became even more enviable, thanks to the likes of designers like Hermès.

On Monday (Dec. 23) Kardashian took to her Instagram account to thank a few of her designer pals for some of the incredibly expensive Christmas gifts sent to six-month-old Nori.

Just as we predicted, North nabbed a pair of Hermès baby booties, and a cashmere baby blanket that retails for close to $800, from Michael Coste, who manages external relations for the brand.

North was also given an adorable pair of kitty shoes by designer Charlotte Olympia, which retail for about $320.

Stella McCartney also sent Kimye's only child a few outfits from her children's line, ensuring that North continues to give Jay and Bey's girl, Blue Ivy, a run for the title of most fashionable baby.

Lastly, Italian shoe designer Giuseppe Zanotti sent little North two pairs of baby shoes that had Kardashian raving, "Thank you so much Giuseppe for the amazing shoes you made for North! WE LOVE YOU @giuseppezanottiworld."

That's quite the haul for a baby, and since North is already used to receiving the best of the best from the world's biggest designers, we can't wait to see what Santa brings her.

Taylor Swift Shares Childhood Christmas Video On Instagram

Fresh off wrapping up her world tour, Taylor Swift has been keeping busy baking cookies, decorating her Christmas tree, and revisiting Christmas memories of yesteryear.

On Monday (Dec. 23), the 24-year-old shared a piece of her childhood on the Internet, posting a video of her four-year-old self chatting on the phone on Christmas day.

"Christmas 1993, on a very important phone call with Britany. @britmaack," Swift wrote along with the video.

In the clip, Swift doesn't seem particularly pleased to be receiving a phone call from her friend, whom she asks in a demanding tone, "What? Britney, what? What is it?"

Meanwhile, Swift revealed she also gets into the holiday spirit by listening to some of her favorite Christmas tunes.

"[There are] so many! Colbie Caillat has a great Christmas album I’m obsessed with. I love the She & Him Christmas stuff. Bing Crosby, of course. 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' by Mariah Carey. Beach Boys have great Christmas music," she told Entertainment Weekly when asked what her go-to song was to start the Christmas season off each year. "Train has this song called 'Shake Up Christmas.' I have so many favorite Christmas songs right now."

Kate Middleton Repeats Tartan Coat At Sandringham For Christmas (PHOTOS)

It's not Christmas until the British royals make their way to Sandringham.

Kate Middleton, Prince William, Queen Elizabeth II and the rest of the Buckingham Palace crew arrived at St. Mary Magdalene Church in King's Lynn this morning for Christmas Day services, decked out in their holiday finest. The Duchess of Cambridge arrived in a tan overcoat only to reveal that she was wearing a tartan Alexander McQueen dress coat, the very same one she wore in November 2012 to play field hockey -- yes, field hockey -- at St. Andrew's. The new mom topped off the look with a festive green hat by Gina Foster.

Walking into the church hand-in-hand with William, Kate and her hubby fielded questions about Prince George, who was notably absent from the festivities. "We've had a good morning with George and I can't wait until next year when he's bigger," Will said.

Prince Harry, recently back from his trek to Antarctica, joined the family at Sandringham bearded and solo (sorry, Cressida Bonas), while Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie looked very stylish in their coat/hat ensembles. As expected, there were no other Middletons in sight, but Kate's parents are predicted to join the royals for Boxing Day tomorrow.

Per tradition, gifts were exchanged during Christmas Eve so that the family can focus on religious services and the traditional turkey lunch during Christmas Day, which will take place at 1:15pm before the Queen's speech on television at 3pm.

Check out the royals in all their Christmas glory below!

Merry Christmas!

How's your Christmas tree looking this year? Probably not nearly as glam as these celebrities' trees.

Don't feel too bad. You probably didn't enlist the help of a professional decorator to make your home sparkle with the spirit of the season, now did you?

And while it's not a contest, these celebrities went all out when it came to breaking out the tinsel:

Leighton Meester's Old Clearasil Commercial Is Far From Embarrassing (VIDEO)

Long before she was Blair Waldorf or the future Mrs. Adam Brody, Leighton Meester was doing Clearasil commercials.

But remarkably, this wasn't a case of a celebrity enduring an embarrassing shoot to pay the bills (see: here) -- Leighton actually made acne wash look cool. Between her effortless ponytail and the way she charms her co-star in the ad, it's not hard to see why she was tapped to play the ultimate social queen for "Gossip Girl" in 2007.

Watch the commercial above, and don't even try to tell us your 14-year-old self wouldn't want to be Leighton.

She was always stylish...

Queen Elizabeth & Princess Margaret Were The Olsen Sisters Of Their Time (PHOTOS)

As any two sisters know, matching outfits might just be the most embarrassing punishment parents can inflict on their daughters. By the time the Olsen sisters came along in the '90s, their awkward outfit coordination became the standard by which parents could gain inspiration.

But turns out, there was a famous set of sisters that came before the Olsens to set the bar high in the matchy-matchy department: Queen Elizabeth II and the late Princess Margaret. Just four years apart, these royal sisters weren't twins, but they had complementing wardrobes that were no doubt copied by the Brit youngsters of their time.

Joan Rivers Says Jennifer Lawrence Should 'Grow Up'

$
0
0
Jennifer Lawrence is almost universally beloved, but she managed to make at least one enemy this past year.

It seems that "Fashion Police" co-host Joan Rivers is still holding a grudge against the Oscar-winning actress, telling the New York Post, "My New Year’s resolution is [ensuring] Jennifer Lawrence grows up and realizes how lucky she is and calms down.”

Clearly Rivers is still touchy over Lawrence's comments back in November that shows like "Fashion Police" tell young people to judge others based on "all the wrong values and that it's OK to point at people and call them ugly or fat."

Rivers, 80, initially responded to the 23-year-old's comments via Twitter, writing that the actress was "arrogant and a hypocrite -- apparently Lawrence loved Rivers' show when they were complimenting her during award season but began railing against it when she had a movie to promote.

Lawrence didn't respond to Rivers' tweets directly, but she did go on to tell Barbara Walters that she believes it should be "illegal to call somebody fat on TV."

The "American Hustle" star has been candid about her refusal to lose weight for roles, her distaste for dieting, and willingness to admit when she's been photoshopped -- yet Rivers seems to think her campaign is nothing but an act.

“I love that she’s telling everyone how wrong it is to worry about retouching and body image, and meanwhile, she has been touched up more than a choir boy at the Vatican," Rivers told the Post. "Look at her posters. She doesn’t have a nose, she has two holes. She just has to learn, don’t talk if you’re doing it.”

Prince Harry Is Keeping His Beard Because William Got To Keep His (PHOTOS)

Since we know the world has been waiting on pins and needles to see just how long Prince Harry is going to maintain his new beard, we have an update: It's still going strong.

The ginger facial hair made an appearance at Sandringham yesterday for the royal family Christmas celebration. So why didn't he go clean-shaven for the holidays? Harry reportedly joked that beards were a "royal tradition" ever since Prince William kept his overgrown stubble after a 10-day stint in Barbados for the Royal Navy back in December 2008.

But the "tradition" runs farther than William -- Prince Charles sported his own beard back in his younger, hunkier days. It's no wonder Harry took the Walking With the Wounded charity trek to Antarctica as an opportunity to show that he could grow manly facial hair just like the other men in the family.

Think Charles and Will had to moisturize their beards, too?

Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis Engagement Rumors Heat Up Again

$

After months of speculation, there are even more whispers that Ashton Kutcher is ready to make things official with Mila Kunis.

With Kutcher's divorce to Demi Moore finalized and behind him, rumors that he and Kunis will soon be engaged have started flying once again.

"They talk about getting married and having kids," a source, who claims to be a "pal" of the couple, told Us Weekly. "An engagement is imminent."

The former "That '70s Show" co-stars began dating in April 2012, though it took months and plenty of paparazzi photos for the pair to stop claiming they are "just good friends." It wasn't until just recently that the couple, who were spotted in Kutcher's home state of Iowa just before Christmas, finally seem more comfortable sharing their relationship with the public. Earlier this month, Kutcher made the rare move of sharing an intimate photo of he and Kunis kissing with his Twitter followers.

Despite all this, we can't help but be skeptical of the latest engagement buzz, since alleged friends of the couple have been making the same claims since last summer, and there is yet to be a diamond on Kunis' finger.

While tons of our favorite stars have mastered the art of getting dressed solo, a certain kind of magic happens when both halves of a couple look great. We're talking about duos who consistently hit it out of the park and have the style chops to make the best-dressed list time and time again.

And 2013 was a very stylish year for some of Tinseltown's hottest couples. Some of our old favorite pairs made the cut for most fashionable of the year (you couldn't possibly exclude Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel from this list), but there were quite a lot of new faces too (special shout out to Naya Rivera and Big Sean).

Check out our list of the most stylish couples of 2013 -- and Brad and Angelina, you had better up your style game if you want to make the list next year.

'American Hustle' Costumes Offer A Portrait Of Swanky '70s Fashion

LOS ANGELES (AP) — From Christian Bale's burgundy velour blazer to Amy Adams' plunging sequin halter dress, "American Hustle" is a cinematic romp through the over-the-top styles of the 1970s.

Set in New York and New Jersey in 1978, the film tells the story of a pair of con artists (Bale and Adams) forced to work for a cocky FBI agent (Bradley Cooper) bent on bringing down powerbrokers and politicians. This decadent world of power, crime and big money comes to life through ostentatious fashions and outrageous hairdos. All the characters are reinventing themselves, and it shows in their clothes. "They had ideas, they lived large and they took risks," costume designer Michael Wilkinson said of the '70s styles that inspired his designs. "Clothes were less structured, had less underpinnings — it was like people didn't give a damn."

Though the Australian-born Wilkinson said his childhood was drenched in American pop culture, "I approached this as a research project, just like you would study about the Greek ruins or outer galaxy."

He scoured Cosmopolitan magazine, along with advertisements, movies and TV shows of the era. "Goodfellas" and "Atlantic City" were particularly influential films.

"And 'Saturday Night Fever' from 1977," Wilkinson added. "(That) had the most pertinence to Bradley Cooper's character. He's a guy from the Bronx, and he lived life as a black-and-white moral shooter working for the FBI, and wears a cheap polyester suit that doesn't fit him so well."

The character ups his fashion game after meeting the dapper con-couple.

"He ends up in a silk shirt and silk scarf, which are pop-culture references," Wilkinson said. "And then he wears a leather jacket to the FBI."

The designer relished in Halston's vintage vault, to which he was granted access for the film, and he dressed Adams in authentic pieces from the '70s.

"The lines (of clothing silhouettes) of the late '70s, with designers like Halston, were reinventing the wardrobe of women," he said. "It was about being comfortable in your skin and walking tall."

Hair is so prominent in "American Hustle," it's practically another character. Lead hairstylist Kathrine Gordon studied old issues of Playboy and high-school yearbooks from the '70s for inspiration.

She and Bale worked together to create his character's elaborate comb-over, complete with fuzzy, glue-on hairpiece. The film opens with a scene of its careful construction.

"I came up with this idea to stuff it," Gordon said of the comb-over she cut into Bale's real hair. "And then (director) David (O'Russell) rewrote the script, and I taught Christian how to do it on camera."

Adams wears styles reminiscent of disco parties, Studio 54 and "the Breck girl" ads of the era. Jeremy Renner, who plays a New Jersey politician, has a fluffy bouffant. Jennifer Lawrence, an unhappy wife in the film, wears bouncy, sex-kitten updos whether she's going out or not. And Cooper rocks a tight perm: He's shown wearing curling rods in one scene.

Wilkinson, whose film credits include "Man of Steel," ''Tron: Legacy" and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part II," said he especially loved playing with fabrics, colors and prints for Bale's charming con-man.

"I'm really proud of Christian Bale," the designer said. "It shows the possibility of an expression of personality in menswear. He explores his character in his clothes and he's a man of the world. He mixes prints!"

13 Royals Who Mattered In 2013 That Weren't Kate Middleton

Sure, Kate Middleton produced the next royal heir to the British throne this year, but there were plenty of other royals who were noteworthy in 2013. So we decided to round up all of the royals, nobles and princely family members who deserve their shot in the spotlight for what they accomplished in the past 12 months.

Herewith, the unsung royal heroes of 2013.

Queen Maxima If having one of the most fabulously colorful wardrobes in all of Europe wasn't enough, Maxima was upgraded from princess to queen consort back in April when Queen Beatrix abdicated the Dutch throne. Plus, she got her very first Vogue cover.

Princess Madeleine This year, the Swedish royal married her "prince" charming, financier Christopher O'Neill, in June and announced her pregnancy a couple of months later. The best part? Madeleine and Chris will be raising their little biskvi in the oven right here in the States, since the couple currently lives in New York.

Princess Eugenie & Princess Beatrice Dubbed the "evil stepsisters" of the 2011 Royal Wedding, these young ladies came into their own this year. Eugenie, 23, moved to New York City to work for Paddle8 auction house, while 25-year-old Beatrice has more than made up for that hat with some great outfits. And Bea's even sparking rumors about a possible engagement to longtime boyfriend Dave Clark.

Prince Frederik The heir apparent to the throne of Denmark may have had his fairytale ending back in 2004, when he married his Australian bride, but he's continued to live the dream, embarking on a royal tour of his Aussie wife's homeland. He and Princess Mary celebrated their ninth wedding anniversary this year, as they watch their four children continue to grow into the cutest little royals (seriously). Things are only getting better for Frederik.

Charlotte Casiraghi Between her personal triumphs and her Gucci modeling gig, Princess Grace Kelly's granddaughter had a lot of reasons to celebrate this year. Earlier this month, she and reported fiance Gad Elmaleh welcomed a baby boy.

Queen Rania What other queen would get her own Instagram account? Rania has always been a trendsetter, but this year she continued to be an inspiration for women, penning an open letter for CNN's "Girl Rising" project. "If one girl with courage is a revolution, imagine what feats we can achieve together," she wrote.

Prince Felix The Prince of Luxembourg had quite the year, marrying his girlfriend Claire Lademacher not once, but twice (check out Claire's stunning Elie Saab gown for round two). As the younger brother, he may not be the heir to the Grand Ducal throne, but it looks like he got his fairytale ending.

Princess Estelle The 1-year-old gave Prince George some serious competition in the cuteness department this year. As second in line to the Swedish throne, Estelle knows how to work it in front of the camera. Luckily, we've been able to see the adorable tot grow before our eyes.

Zara Phillips Just when you thought British royal baby hype was over, the queen's granddaughter announces her pregnancy. Zara has followed in the Duchess of Cambridge's footsteps, opting for trendy maternity designer clothes and even taking a break from her career -- though Zara's metier is in the equestrian field, of course.

Princess Charlene The former Olympian continued to bring her touch of modernity to Monaco, doing everything from inaugurating the principality's first Starbucks to rocking one of the sleekest beauty looks the noble world has ever seen. But between hitting up global fashion weeks, attending her brother's wedding and gracing top magazine covers, Char has finally started hinting that she's ready to have children. Cue the media bump watch.

Prince Hisahito This 7-year-old is third in line to the Chrysanthemum Throne of Japan, and he officially graduated from kindergarten this year. More importantly, he has the most impossibly adorable sense of style (see: his miniature pulled-up socks, loafers and leather tote bag).

Queen Mathilde Let's put it this way: She began the year as Princess Mathilde and ended it as Queen Mathilde. When King Albert II of Belgium abdicated the throne, Mathilde landed a queen consort role alongside her hubby Philippe. She's even gained the confidence to go experimental in the fashion department, for better or for worse.
