Kanye West Is Planning To Keep Quiet, At Least For Six Months

$

Apparently, Kanye West is tired of the world criticizing him for sticking his foot in his mouth. The rapper went on a 27–minute–long rant at his Toronto show, saying he'll stop speaking negatively for "six months, at least."

His oddly–musical stream of conscious described how West is looking forward to 2014, and even 2024. "I decided to completely focus everything in 2014 on all the new ideas and all the creative outlets," he said.

The rapper referenced the disagreements he has had with Nike, and promised to move forward from it with a positive attitude. "I'm not [going to] ever bring up Nike again. And the only way I'll bring them up is in a positive light," he said. "Because I actually appreciate the opportunity to have been able to make my own shoe with them, and if I didn't have the opportunity I wouldn't have my deal I have with Adidas right now."

West has become well–known in recent years for his controversial actions and statements. While he isn't willing to change who he is, he noted his need to keep it quiet for a while. He explained that his fans are one big family and he is the "crazy cousin." He joked that every family needs someone to play that role.

His rant might have gone a little overboard, but his sentiments seem positive. "I just really feel like I want to be expressive with my work, with my music. I want to be expressive with this opportunity I have with Adidas, and just go home to my family," he told his audience.

Will Kanye manage to keep his mouth shut in early 2014? We'll believe it when we see it.

If you have an incredibly high tolerance for West's antics, check out the full video of his below:

Prince William's First Interview Ever Is Too Cute (VIDEO)

Attention Prince William aficionados: We have seen his first interview, and it's just as adorable as we thought it would be.

Back in 1994, William addressed a group of press gathered to meet him, Prince Harry and cousins Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie as they hit the slopes. The well-spoken 12-year-old was already a little man, checking to see that his young cousins were OK amid the incessant flashbulbs. (For the record, the girls' awkward, frozen expressions were the cutest things ever.)

But the best part had to be when he was asked how his skiing was going, to which young Will quipped, "I'm improving" -- a sign that his self-deprecating sense of humor is nothing new.

Watch the video above to see Will and the rest of the kiddos back in the day.

He grew up so fast...

2 Ways You'd Never Think To Wear Glitter

$

Glitter makeup is synonymous with New Year's Eve. But no one wants to look like a shiny disco ball when puckering up at the countdown. While the agony of removing all that sparkle at the end of the night makes it even less exciting, you can wear glitter makeup without looking like or making a mess.

In the video above, PopSugar Beauty reporter Kirbie Johnson and Gloss Beauty Studio owner Natalie Saraf shows us two stunning new ways to sport glittery eyes and lips.

For the eye makeup...

1. Sweep translucent powder underneath your eyes to catch falling bits of glitter.
2. Apply brow gel along your lash line, then dip a small angled brush into the glitter.
3. Tap off excess product and lightly press the glitter onto the brow gel. Don't drag, as this will create a clumping effect.
4. Finish with a shimmering winged-out eye and brush away the translucent powder.

For the lipstick...

1. Apply concealer to your lips to tone down your natural lip color.
2. Use a nude lip liner to outline and fill in your lips. This will keep glitter and lipstick in place.
3. Smooth on a red lipstick.
4. Mix a tiny amount of Vaseline with red glitter and blend onto your lips with a brush. Be sure to work your way from the center out.
5. Dab any loose glitter in the middle to really make your lips pop.

If glitter makeup isn't your thing, there's always sparkly nail art...

12 Moments That Restored Our Faith In Fashion In 2013

$

With all of the high-brow exclusivity and the unrealistic standards of beauty, it can be easy to forget why we love fashion so much. Fortunately, 2013 offered up some fantastic people, organizations and moments that made us proud to follow the style beat.

A so-called "plus-size model" broke through and got the mainstream's attention... and respect.
Robyn Lawley has become the unofficial poster child of the plus-size movement, sparking conversation on everything from "thigh gaps" to the validity of the label that separates her from mainstream models. Her empowering, inclusive message -- to love your body whether or not you have curves -- has been heard loud and clear, especially as she nabs top modeling gigs for the likes of Ralph Lauren and Vogue.

Lululemon was accused of discriminating against curvier shoppers... and was forced to change its tune.
After making comments implying that not all women's bodies are built for his brand's yoga pants, Lululemon founder Chip Wilson issued an apology. "I'm sad for the repercussions of my actions," he said in an online video. "I'm sad for the people at Lululemon who I care so much about, that have really had to face the brunt of my actions. I take responsibility for all that has occurred and the impact it has had on you. I'm sorry to have put you all through this."

Retailers finally started to give curvier women the trendy clothes they deserve.
"When I'm working in the real world with real women and we're shopping, we find that fashion seems to end when you get any larger than a size 12," Tim Gunn told The Huffington Post. "How ridiculous is that?" Fortunately, it seems designers have started to hear women's pleas. More and more options have become available this year, with global retailers like Mango, ModCloth and H&M catering to plus-sizes. Nancy LeWinter, editorial director of OneStopPlus.com, told us, "I think 10 years ago, plus-size women were OK settling. Today, plus-size women are far more clear about what they want and don't want."

A magazine proved that a no-photoshop policy is actually possible.
Verily, a fashion and lifestyle magazine, hit its stride this year, pleasantly surprising the world with its no-Photoshop policy. Contributing Editor Ashley Crouch told us that the magazine was built on the principal that "the unique features of women, whether crows feet, freckles, or a less-than-rock-hard body, are aspects that contribute to women's beauty and should be celebrated -- not shamed, changed or removed." Amen, sister.
verily

Someone finally asked plus-size women what they want to be called.
As contentious as the term "plus-size" has become, it seems nobody had been asking the 60 percent of American women identifying with the plus-size market what they'd like to be called. Thankfully, Sonsi.com, a retailer from the same parent company as Lane Bryant, decided to poll the women themselves. The national survey, which polled 1,000 women sizes 14 and up, found that 28 percent prefer the term "curvy." After that, respondents were split: 25 percent said they prefer "plus-size" and 25 percent would prefer "full-figured." So there you go.

Stores placed "disabled" mannequins in their windows to better reflect the shoppers who peer in.
Pro Infirmis, an organization for the disabled, created a series of mannequins based on real people with physical disabilities in a project entitled "Because Who Is Perfect? Get Closer." The results are breathtaking.

Real women of all shapes showed off their bodies in lingerie... and were applauded for it.
When Chrystal Bougon, owner of plus-size lingerie store Curvy Girl, launched her "Regular Women" campaign, she asked customers to fearlessly submit photos of themselves in lingerie to "show that women with rolls, bumps, lumps, scars, stretch marks, surgery scars and natural breasts that have nursed babies can be stunning and beautiful." Women came out in full-force, and a national media conversation was started.

Magazines were exposed for their flagrant use of Photoshop...
It took one Jennifer Lawrence GIF to show the world how much unnecessary Photoshop goes into the images we see in fashion magazines. When a June 2011 Flare magazine cover of the actress resurfaced along with the aforementioned GIF this year, the Internet saw a striking before and after contrast, highlighting how much even the most beautiful stars aren't safe from retouching. The negative response was a strong indicator of what people really want: natural, realistic images.

... and real women, including teens, lobbied for change.
Inspired by 14-year-old Julia Bluhm's successful petition against Seventeen magazine's use of Photoshop, SPARK Summit asked Teen Vogue to do the same. "These photoshopped images are extremely dangerous to girls like us who read them, because they keep telling us: you are not skinny enough, pretty enough or perfect enough," the Change.org petition read.

Models didn't take themselves too seriously.
No one can make us laugh like Chrissy Teigen can. The stunner continues to prove that models don't have to be stuck-up, aloof figures. Between her hilariously candid Twitter account, her real talk about model diets and her down-to-earth take on her own style, Chrissy's redefining the role of models... in the best way possible.
chrissy

The industry started an honest discussion about eating disorders.
When it comes to prompting a dialogue about eating disorders in the industry, sometimes it's best to start right at the source: the sketches which inspire the clothes marketed to women. Star Models, a modeling agency based in Brazil, released ads depicting a fashion design sketch of a model contrasted with a picture of a "real" model with those same unweidly proportions. The resulting images made for a powerfully graphic anti-anorexia campaign.

Abercrombie & Fitch said it didn't care for heavier shoppers... so shoppers of all sizes hit back with amazing parody ads.
After Abercrombie & Fitch's CEO said he only cared to sell his clothes to "cool," "good-looking" people (and not "larger people," as industry expert Robin Lewis suggested), blogger Jes M. Baker decided to show the company what "Attractive & Fat" looks like in the brand's clothes with a series of parody ads. "I challenge the separation of attractive and fat, and I assert that they are compatible regardless of what you believe," Baker wrote.

But the fashion world's not always so peaceful...

Here Are The Most Controversial, Most Exciting And Most Improved Style Stars Of 2013

$
0
0
Welp, as 2013 comes to an end and we think back on the year in fashion, there are plenty of major moments that stand out. Some were better than others, of course; but by and large, this past year saw some pretty amazing looks.

So to celebrate the end of the year, we're giving out our own Style Awards to the stars who kept us on our toes, the ones who inspired us to push boundaries with our own wardrobes and the ones we could always count on to look drop-dead gorgeous.

Here are the most important woman in fashion this year:

Kate Middleton: Most Reliable

kate middleton

Sure, Kate Middleton might not wear the most exciting outfits, but she always looks stunning, no matter the circumstance. She knows which colors and silhouettes suited her body, and her style choices are some of the most imitated in the world. And hey, the woman looked flawless mere hours after giving birth -- and if that's not impressive, we don't know what is.

Miley Cyrus: Most Controversial

miley

If there is one thing we can all agree on, it's that Miley Cyrus is never predictable. She always throws us for a loop in the wardrobe department, whether she's twerking in flesh-colored lingerie or wearing pasties on the red carpet. With a single outfit she can inspire thousands of articles, tweets and copycats.

Rooney Mara: Most Avant-Garde

rooney mara

Having a uniform is one way to ensure you always look great and feel comfortable. Mara has done just that with her black and white-centric closet. While you may never catch her in, say, a beautiful cobalt blue, she finds other ways to push limits, like wearing extreme architectural shapes and avant-garde silhouettes. This girl is ahead of her time -- we're all going to be dressing more like Mara in 2014, mark our words.

Naomie Harris: Most Surprising

naomi harris

Where did she come from? Yes, we know she played a Bond girl in "Skyfall," but since when did she become so trendy? It seems like every week Naomie was on the red carpet, making the fashion gods proud. We're not sure where her style chops came from, but we do know that she is one to watch in 2014.

Sandra Bullock: Most Improved

sandra

Seriously, who is her new stylist? Lately Sandra has been on fire, and we're not exactly sure what changed. Every single outfit she wore on her "Gravity" press tour was stop-in-your-tracks sexy. We don't know what new tricks you've been testing out, Sandy B., but please keep it up.

Solange Knowles: Most Exciting

solange

Black, white and gray are staples on the red carpet, but sometimes we crave bright hues and bold patterns -- and no one brings them more than Ms. Knowles. She knows how to mix prints better than anyone we know, and she isn't afraid of neon shades and a strong lip color. Most importantly, her outfits always make us smile.

Zoe Saldana: Most Effortless

zoe

You knows those girls who always look so perfectly put-together but like they didn't even have to think about it? That pretty much explains Zoe Saldana in a nutshell. It's like fashion is in her blood.

Nicole Richie: Most Stylish

nicole richie

Nicole Richie has come a long way since her days on "The Simple Life." While she used to favor ill-fitting overalls and excessive amounts of pink, today Richie has transformed herself into a style icon, always embracing new trends and pushing the boundaries (we all remember her gray hair at the Met Gala). Mrs. Joel Madden is one star who always gets it right, and for this she earns the award for most stylish of 2013.

These Are The Model Photos You DON'T See In Magazines

Models may be admired for their grace and beauty, but they're not always picture-perfect -- and that's a good thing. Luckily, these ladies can be just as laid-back and silly as the rest of us, even when they're on the job.

Sure, the glossy images we see in magazines are airbrushed, perfectly-posed shots, but there are plenty of candid moments captured behind-the-scenes that make these stunners much more relatable. As proof, we decided to round up some top models, including first-namers like Gisele, Karlie and Cara, who aren't afraid to joke around on set.

Sometimes catwalks aren't safe, either:

This Vintage Vaseline Commercial Reminds Us Why It's The 'Wonder Jelly'

$

The editors here at HuffPost Style are split on using Vaseline. While we now know that petroleum jelly isn't as harmless as we once thought, nothing seems to soothe our dry, chapped skin quite like the gooey substance.

In the 1980s commercial above, we are reminded of the many uses for Vaseline. From lip balm to foot cream to makeup remover, this emollient product that's been around since 1872 can "fix" just about anything. (Who knew that it could also silence squeaky doors and shine up our worn leather shoes?) And it doesn't hurt that you can purchase a big jar of this stuff at the drugstore for under $5. We're still scraping the sides of our tub of Vaseline from last winter...

We may not be sold on the "100 percent pure claim," but we can attest to the "let it work wonders for you" tagline. Where do you stand on the Vaseline debate?

Healthier alternatives to petroleum jelly:

Along with the rest of the world, we freaked out when Beyonce released her new album, complete with 17 30-second video previews, earlier this month. But one of our favorites had to be the video for "Yonce," which featured some of the best supermodels: Joan Smalls, Chanel Iman and Jourdan Dunn.

Incidentally, they're all quite a presence on Twitter... and they're funny, intelligent and sassy to boot. Check out a sampling below.

There are few couples who elicit as much jealousy as Chrissy Teigen and John Legend can. The model-singer duo are pretty much the funniest, most down-to-earth (and in love) married pair the celebrity world has to offer -- in our opinion, at least.

So as much as we love Chrissy, we have to tell her: Girl, we want to steal your dreamy crooning husband. In honor of John's 35th birthday today (Dec. 28), we're taking a look back at some of their cutest, most jealous-making moments.

Not every 15-year-old aspiring makeup artist gets a personal visit from Gisele Bundchen, but Karina Xavier got just that this week.

The Brazilian teen, who's currently battling bone cancer, was surprised by the supermodel on Thursday at her house, where the two swapped makeup tips and ate pão de queijo (naturally). Through her blog, Chic By Karina, Xavier posts makeup and DIY tutorials, so it makes sense Bundchen would let Xavier do her makeup during the visit.

"From the moment you surprised me, until the moment you left, I was so shocked for you being here with me," Xavier captioned one of her Instagram photos of the event. "You are a great person and you will continue inspiring me."

Fortunately, the model seemed just as smitten. "You are warrior, an inspiration of positivity and courage," Gisele wrote on her own Instagram. "I will be praying for you. Sending you love and light always."

Click over to Xavier's blog to get all of the teen's tips -- including how to get Kylie Jenner's makeup and how to make DIY American flag shorts -- and check out her awesome day with Bundchen below.

Please Refrain From Calling Lorde A 'Teen Hottie,' She Might Vomit On You

At 17, Lorde is wise beyond her years, and if it weren't for people constantly bringing up the fact that she's a "wunderkind," we'd have a hard time believing she isn't actually 35.

And though she's already separated herself from the majority of her pop star peers, Lorde would like everyone to refrain from dubbing her a "teen hottie."

“The phrase ‘teen hottie’ literally makes me want to throw up,” the singer, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, told the New York Times in a recent interview.

We're not sure exactly who is calling Lorde a "teen hottie," but we agree it should probably stop right now. Take note, however, that it's all right to label her a "pop princess."

“I’m a pop princess at heart," she admitted to the paper. “Pop is about distilling what you want to say and making it easy. And the way I write isn’t about making things easy. It’s a weird juxtaposition.”

8 Style Stars On Our Radar In 2014, Which Fashionistas Are You Watching? (PHOTOS)

We've already waxed poetic about the stars we thought dominated the red carpet in 2013 and now we have our sights set on the new year. In 2014, there are 8 ladies in particular that are on our radar and we're these fashionistas will bring the fab!

Check 'em out below! Which style stars are looking forward to?

Jurnee Smollett has grown up before our eyes. The 27-year-old star isn't the little girl from "Eve's Bayou" anymore -- her sexy role in this year's "Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor" made that crystal clear. And her personal style is just as grown, sexy and sophisticated as she is!
jurnee smollett

Another child star who has blossomed into quite the young woman is actress Keke Palmer. We've seen her transform from a teeny boppin' Disney star to playing a Grammy-Award winning member of TLC. And while her acting skills have grown, so has her flare for fashion.
keke palmer

There was no denying Ciara's sartorial prowess this year. The singer/dancer has always turned heads, but in 2013 she kicked her style up a few notches. Now a fixture on the front row of Fashion Weeks around the world, our radar is permanently fixed on the star.
ciara

Teyonah Parris might not be a household name yet, but we think it's only a matter of time before that happens. The "Mad Men" actress is slowly but surely making her presence known on the small screen AND the red carpet.

We haven't been shy about our love for actress Lupita Nyong'o. On screen her performance in "12 Years A Slave" was incredible and off screen her style stole our hearts. We're dying to see what she steps out in during awards season.
lupita nyongo

This British bombshell is blazin' hot and is only going to get hotter in the new year. We're talking about "Mandela" actress Naomie Harris, of course! She has served up some major style moments over the past year and we can't wait to lay eyes on what she has in store for 2014.

Last but certainly not least, we will remain obsessed with the awesomeness that are our first daughters -- Malia and Sasha Obama. Style stars, indeed.

16 Beauty Resolutions You're Making Today (Including Taking Off Your Makeup Before Bed...)

$
0
0
It's officially the new year, and you've no doubt made plenty of promises to yourself already about what 2014 will hold. But did you forget to amp up your beauty regimen?

Before heading out last night to ring in the new year, we made sure to jot down some key changes that many of us are incorporating into our routines when it comes to hair, skin, nails and teeth in 2014. Get inspired by the list below -- we bet a few of these will look familiar.

You will not brush your hair when it's wet.

You will put on lotion after a hot bath or shower every single time.

You won't wait until your toenails are in the worst shape possible to get a pedicure.

You will shave your legs more regularly.

You will never leave the house with chipped nail polish.

You will use a clarifying shampoo every once in a while.

You will get at least 7 hours of beauty sleep every night.

You will start exfoliating your lips before wearing bright lipstick.

You won't pick at your nails.

You will leave the house without a speck of makeup... sometimes, at least.

You will actually attempt adventurous eye makeup.

You will brush your teeth after lunch (and after your mid-morning coffee, for that matter).

You will never ever go to sleep with your makeup on. No matter how sleepy and/or drunk you are.

You will learn how to do all of those fancy braids.

You will exfoliate your body at least once a week.

You will drink water. Lots and lots of water.

Cosmo Has One Outfit It Really, Really Wants You To Wear (PHOTOS)

Magazines are meant to inspire us, showcasing the most of-the-moment, aspirational styles we should be wearing.

Nowhere is this more apparent than on Cosmopolitan's covers, where fashion editors spent the better part of 2013 making a case for crop tops. The latest cover model, Ariana Grande, is featured on the February 2014 issue, smiling (slightly uncomfortably) in a black crop top and matching skirt. Like we said, midriff-baring is a major theme for Cosmo -- the mag also put six other stars, including Lauren Conrad, Kim Kardashian and Kelly Osbourne, in similar looks this year alone.

With all of the appearances crop tops made on the Spring 2014 runways, we shouldn't be too surprised with Cosmo's affinity for the mildly risqué style. But the question remains: Has Cosmo convinced you to wear a crop top yet?

The Kardashians' New Year's Eve Was A Low-Key Affair

It's quite possible that you spent New Year's Eve the same way the Kardashians did -- surrounded by family.

In direct contrast to their Christmas Eve party, the Kardashian clan decided to keep New Year's Eve a low-key event -- just hanging out at home with some bottles of bubbly, silly hats, noisemakers, and dancing to Celine Dion.

"Spending NYE @ home w/ @KendallJenner @KylieJenner @ForeverMalika @robkardashian & friends was the way to go! #2014 I love you guys!" Khloe Kardashian tweeted to her 8.6 million followers, while her sister Kim wrote, "I hope everyone has a safe New Years tonight! Hillary Clinton's Bangs Welcome Mayor Bill DeBlasio Into Office (PHOTOS)

It's a new year, so that means two things: political inaugurations and freshly cut bangs.

New York City watched as Bill de Blasio was sworn in as mayor yesterday on the steps of City Hall. Naturally, our eyes veered toward Hillary Clinton, who attended the ceremony sporting a brand new haircut, complete with bangs (!). The shaggy 'do is just the latest in Hillary's hair experimentation, as she's been accumulating praise for updating her signature style and taking chances. (Even her scrunchies have been hits.)

Feeling déjà vu? That's because it was just a year ago that America watched President Obama get sworn in for a second term as First Lady Michelle Obama looked on through her new fringe. But since Mrs. O has already ditched the look, it seems she's passed the bangs torch over to Hillz.

It's only day two, but we predict 2014 will be another strong hair year for Hillary.

Prada Casts Another Black Model And More Brown Beauties Land Major Fashion Campaign (PHOTOS)

Hot on the heels of Balmain tapping Rihanna and Givenchy casting Erykah Badu along with a few other brown skinned beauties for their spring 2014 campaigns, now comes news that Prada has featured yet another black model for its upcoming collection.

The Italian fashion house recently made headlines after using Kenyan-born model Malaika Firth in its fall 2013 ads, which marked the first time in nearly 20 years a model of color was cast. This time around Cindy Bruna is lending her stunning good looks to Prada. The South of France native has also scored a spot in Burberry's spring 2014 campaign.

And another Italian designer, Philipp Plein, is also proving that black is beautiful. Plein has enlisted all black cast of models for his spring 2014, which include Awa Ceesay Nadja Giramata, Roger Dupé and Broderick Hunter, to name a few.

Looks like folks are starting to take heed to the fashion industry's glaring diversity issue and the campaign to solve it that's being lead by fashion activist Bethann Hardison. Let's hope this isn't just a passing trend.

Here's a look at Prada and Philipp Plein's colorful spring 2014 campaigns. What do you think?

New Year's resolution for 2014: Become a princess.

We say this every year, but this time, we really mean it -- especially after seeing Princess Marie of Denmark on New Year's Eve. The 37-year-old fluttered into Denmark's royal New Year's Banquet on husband Prince Joachim's arm, wearing a shiny silver peplumed gown, sparkly pink shoes and a diamond tiara. All of our glittery dresses from the big night have officially been put to shame.

We're not always fans of the dresses from the annual event in Copenhagen, but Marie kicked off the year in style, showing us just why we love watching royals in all of their glam glory. Since it's already the second day of 2014, we officially have 363 days to use this as motivation to become princesses, too.

In the meantime, check out Marie's regal New Year's Eve getup below.

11 Ways To Revamp Your Clothes Without Spending Much (Or Any) Money

$

Holiday season has come to an end, which means one thing: Your wallet is seriously hurting.

Between all of the Christmas presents and hostess gifts you doled out, you probably don't have as much disposable income to spend on your wardrobe as you normally have... yet, you're already tired of your winter rotation of outfits. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to revamp your clothes without spending much (or any) money at all. Here are a few tricks:

Switch out the buttons on your coats. Who needs pricey outerwear when gold buttons can make any old coat look new?

Wear an oversized sweater over a dressy outfit. The cozy touch will add a cool, slouchy element to your closet staples.

Buy a cheap (read: on sale) pair of gloves. After the holidays, winter accessories always hit the sale racks, and you can scoop up a fun pair.

Rock colored or printed socks. Roll up those skinny pant legs and let those socks you got from Grandma show.

Try a bright shade of lipstick. Nobody will notice that you wear the same dress every week if you mix up your usual lip color with a punchy coral or pink shade.

Add a belt to a dress or tunic top. Take a cue from Michelle Obama and give your go-to outfits new proportions and visual interest with a waist cincher.

Wear heels or dressy flats with an outfit you'd normally pair with sneakers (or vice versa!). The resulting outfit will be an unexpected, quirky change from your usual style.

Bust out an attention-grabbing necklace. Sick of your button-down or your white T-shirt? Just add some major bling.

Pick up a punchy headband. Even the most boring outfits become praiseworthy with a fun headband.

Layer your jewelry. You can transform old necklaces into a DIY statement necklace or rock an arm party.

How To Go Gray Naturally

My friends tell me I should consider myself blessed, because at nearly 52 years of age, I’m just beginning to show my gray. And while it doesn't bother me — yet — I’m starting to think about color for the first time in my life.

The odds are, though, that I won’t go there, for a variety of practical reasons: the chemicals, the cost and the hassle of upkeep. But mostly I just don’t want to mess with Mother Nature.

I came close to coloring my hair last year, when my father passed away. My sisters and I contemplated dyeing our brunette hair red in solidarity: My father went into the great beyond at 84 with the same gorgeous copper-red hair with which he came into the world.

How Women Used to Grapple with Gray

Until recently, women fell into two basic camps: those who colored and set their hair until it didn’t, or couldn’t, move (think “helmet head”) and those who went gray naturally.

“Several decades ago, when women decided not to color their hair, they just grew it longer and pulled it back,” says Elizabeth Cunnane Phillips, a trichologist at Philip Kingsley salon in New York City. “You got away with having gray hair because that’s what the norm was — it was either done and colored or it wasn’t.”

Today, women who want to hide their grays have many options. There are demi- and semi-permanent hair color options that are ammonia-free, and therefore less damaging, as well as permanent color, a stronger cocktail of chemicals that keeps the color longer. (Semi-permanent color typically fades in about a dozen shampoos, while demi-permanent color lasts twice as long. These options are best for those whose head of hair is about one-quarter gray.)

Then there’s a completely different contingent of women ready to get their gray on but whose husbands don’t want them to. “I’m always intrigued by what dictates that,” Phillips says.

Either way, there’s no getting around the stereotype that gray is “distinguished” on gentlemen and “dowdy” on ladies. “The high-level women I consult with say, ‘I can’t let it grow out now. It won’t work in the boardroom,’” says Phillips. That’s true in reverse, too. “When the husband is in the boardroom and there’s a lot of social interaction, he often doesn’t want his wife to be gray,” she says.

Steps to a Color-Free Future

If you’ve been coloring your hair regularly but feel ready to take the gray plunge, realize that growing it out isn’t going to be a quick and easy process. First, get a consultation with a good colorist, preferably one who has helped a lot of women slide into silver. And then, because your look is going to be one of “transition” for a while, choose your timing carefully and plan to be patient. You don’t want to start growing out your color right before an important presentation or social event.

Tips for Going Gray
  • Go shorter. A different cut helps to eliminate a bulk of the hair you’re trying to match or catch up to — it also introduces the element of new.

  • Go lighter. Ease into gray by going lighter first, says Phillips, who recommends starting that process as early as possible. This eliminates and/or lessens the demarcation between regrowth and pigments that you’re applying.

  • Add lowlights. Instead of doing a full base color, start doing lowlights — that is, instead of coloring all of the hair, re-pigment hair that’s your base color in strands as opposed to in full. “There are several benefits to this,” Phillips says. “It buys you more time between appointments and it can look very natural — not like you’ve gone gray overnight.”

  • Temporarily cover new gray growth. Within five days, you start to see the shadow of roots; by week four, they’re obvious. In response, the hair-care industry has created a number of products to cover you up in between appointments. You can use a crayon-like cover-up stick from Roux; mascara wand–type color applicators, such as Generation Klean’s Gray Disappear; spray-on hair color powders, like Bumble and Bumble’s; and rinses and foams, including a line from British hair guru John Frieda.

How to Care for Gray Hair

Once you’ve grown out your gray, plan to put in a bit more effort to maintain it and keep it healthy. Step up your regular maintenance: Your old shampoo and conditioner won’t cut it anymore. Choose products that brighten and clarify the gray, like Blue Malva from Aveda, Pantene Pro-V Silver Expressions, Clairol Shimmer Lights and Pure Silver from Philip Kingsley.

Because gray and white hair is naturally more coarse, dry and brittle, you’ll want to give it special care, like having regular deep-conditioning, warm-oil scalp and restorative elasticizer treatments.

“In a perfect world, you should have an elasticizer treatment every two weeks,” Phillips says. “Or you can do it yourself at home.” This helps to bring moisture and elasticity back into the hair fibers to help reflect light and shine. She further stresses the importance of protecting your gray hair from oxidation and advises clients to stay out of direct sunshine, which can make hair dull-looking.

Refresh Your Face

When you do go gray or white, your skin can look a bit washed out. This is a perfect excuse to toss your old cosmetics and bring in some new, added color.

Choose hues that will brighten your complexion and not fight the gray. The right (and brighter) blush, for instance, becomes much more important now, as does a nude lip liner and a rich lipstick that’s just a few shades deeper than your natural color. But steer clear of black liner, face powder and smoky or dark eyeshadows. These will not only age you, but work against your gorgeous new gray.
