Fashion Magazine Covers Were So Much More Glamorous In The 1950s

$
0
0
It's an indisputable fact that the 1950s were a more glamorous time than the present, sneaker-filled world we live in. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the covers of fashion magazines from the era, which showcase the then-contemporary fashions in vivid, Kodachrome-worthy colors.

With photographers like Irving Penn, models like Anne St. Marie and celebrities like Audrey Hepburn to bring them to life, it's no wonder that these glossy covers still inspire us. Check out a sampling of some of our favorite 1950s covers, and let us take you back to a time when red lipstick, cat eyeliner and daytime hats reigned supreme...

These Stars On The Week's Best Dressed List Started 2014 With A Bang

$

Some stars have already proved that 2014 is going to be their year by stepping out in outfits so amazing, we're wondering how they plan on topping them in the next 51 weeks.

Beyoncé made the best-dressed list in a drop-dead gorgeous Tom Ford dress, while Naya Rivera perfected a more casual off-duty look.

Check out our picks for best-dressed and let us what you think.

Beyoncé in Tom Ford

bey

This is how Beyoncé got the name Queen Bey -- because she can pull off looks like this. Bey's skintight LBD showcases her sexy figure, while her thigh-high boots are the perfect compliment to her dress' short hemline.

Kate Middleton in Alexander McQueen

kate

Some outfits are so great, they just need to be repeated. Though we've seen this tartan Alexander McQueen dress coat on the Duchess before, it fits her so well and is so on-trend, we're happy that it made an appearance again.

Naya Rivera

naya

Everything about this look is perfection. She manages to achieve perfect balance in her lace crop top, skinny leather pants and oversized coat. Rivera looks incredibly sexy while remaining sophisticated.

Jessica Chastain

jess

Black lace and red lipstick go together like peanut butter and jelly. This is the perfect look for the holiday season: It is both festive and extremely flattering on the "Zero Dark Thirty" star.

Quvenzhané Wallis

wallis

Could she look any cuter? The 10-year-old actress is melting hearts in this cheetah print dress and her signature puppy purse. This look is age-appropriate while still being fashionable.

Gwen Stefani

gwen

Now this is maternity-chic. The singer isn't letting her baby bump get in the way of looking super stylish. We're not sure whether it's her sky high boots, oversized sunnies or her printed scarf, but Stefani sure has the pregnancy glow.

Chrissy Teigen

chrissy

It's hard to go wrong in a LBD, especially when you look like Chrissy Teigen. This dress fit the model like a glove and is especially sexy when paired with her strappy sandals and big barrel waves.

Kiernan Shipka

shipka

This is the perfect way to wear florals in the winter (provided you live on the balmy West Coast). Shipka expertly paired her flouncy skirt with a black sweater and boots, giving us something to smile about as the temps drop.

See Which Stars Started 2014 With A Flop On This Week's Worst Dressed List

$
0

Yes, it's a new year, but it seems as though some stars are still making old mistakes. This week many of the usual suspects found their way onto the worst-dressed list wearing ill-fitting clothes in bad colors.

Mischa Barton opted for an baggy black dress that did nothing for her slim figure, while Juliette Lewis wore way too much purple on the red carpet.

Check out our picks for worst-dressed of the week and let us know if you agree.

Katy Perry

katy

Unless Ms. Perry is trying out for a cheerleading squad, she needs a new look.

Juliette Lewis

juliette

This looks like a prom dress gone wrong. There is far too much black tulle at the bottom of the skirt and her decision to wear head-to-toe purple satin and a sparkly headband made the ensemble even more juvenile.

Kareena Kapoor Khan

karrena

We question the Bollywood actress' choice of wearing this high-collared coat over these baggy pants, as together, they look a little frumpy. Had she chosen a slimmer pant leg, it would have really streamlined the look.

Mischa Barton

mischa

Though a black dress is often a safe bet, this one has a poor fit. The baggy sleeves and contrasting fabrics are hardly flattering on the actress and her hair just looks messy.

Macy Gray

macy

Well this is one way to ring in 2014. The feathers at the bottom of Gray's dress are far too costumey for the red carpet, while her very casual jacket doesn't jive with her otherwise fancy look. We also wish she had picked dressier shoes.

Paris Hilton

paris

S&M-inspired outfits NEVER look good on the red carpet.

Miley Cyrus

miley fur

Underwear + cowboy boots + way too much fur = Overkill.

Miley Cyrus

miley

It was clearly a rough week for Miley. This outfit wasn't any better than her fur coat ensemble. The flesh-colored crop top, paired with her mini skirt, made the singer too exposed. It's never smart to show lots of leg and your midriff.

Chanel's Canvas Graffiti Backpack Doesn't Look Like It's Worth $3,400 To Us

If anyone can justify a hefty price tag on a designer bag, it's us. Yet, Chanel's recent offering has left us speechless.

The bag in question, Chanel's canvas graffiti backpack, debuted on the fashion house's Spring 2014 runway back in September, but it's featured in Vogue's latest issue, where its $3,400 selling price is bound to drop more than a few jaws. We can already hear our grandmothers hating on it: Four figures for a bag that looks filthy?

Maybe we're missing something here. Or maybe Chanel has finally lost the plot. See the backpack below and tell us: Is this what a $3,400 bag looks like to you?

A hat, duh. To help you stay warm, we've rounded up 21 winter hats that are on sale for under $50. And the best part? They can all be ordered from your couch -- without even going outside.

Buying Perfume Hasn't Changed Since The 1960s -- Just Ask This Avon Lady

$

Do you remember those days when the Avon lady would arrive at your doorstep hawking beauty goods? Well-dressed and made-up, she'd educate our grandmothers, mothers and aunts on the latest makeup trends. But one of our most memorable Avon lady experiences is when she taught us how to pick the perfect perfume.

In the 1961 ad above, we see an Avon rep in the cozy confines of a home that looks like a scene from "Mad Men." With a small selection of fragrances laid out, she guides her potential customer on how and where to apply it. (Tip: You should dab or spritz perfume on your skin in spots where a pulse warms up the notes, like the inside of your wrists and inner side of the arms.)

Everyone's skin chemistry isn't the same, so a fragrance may smell different from woman to woman. This is a part of what makes it so personal. And when you factor in that many people choose to outfit themselves with a perfume that goes with their wardrobe, an event or the season, there simply isn't any other category of beauty that compares to fragrance.

This won't stop these stars from churning out scents:

Here Are All The Celebrities That Tortured Us This Week With Their Awesome Beach Accessories

With the weather being so terrible, all we're thinking about is summer. We're left dreaming about warmer weather, but many lucky celebrities actually traveled to beaches during the holiday season. And trust us, they traveled in style. (Is there any other way?)

Not only were their bikinis' lust-worthy, but there were also some pretty amazing accessories to be had. Between body chains, reflective sunglasses and oversized hats, these accessories of the week had us planning our next trip to Mexico.

Bethenny Frankel's hat

beth

Though an oversized hat may not make sense in everyday life (come on, who can really see when they are wearing one of those?), they are perfect for the beach. They provide shade from the sun and look oh-so stylish.

Olcay Gulsen's sunglasses

sunnies

The fashion designer's bathing suit is almost as cool as those sunglasses.

Olivia Palermo's necklace

Who says you can't wear jewelry on the beach? A wooden necklace is the perfect oceanside accessory.

Rihanna's body chain

If anyone can pull off a body chain with a bikini, it's Riri.

Kendall and Kylie Jenner's matching rings

Forget friendship necklaces -- it's all about matching rings.

Princess Beatrice's beach bag

beatrice

This might just be the perfect beach bag. It is big enough to fit a towel, it's sand-colored so it won't show stains and it has just the right amount of sparkle.

Here are some more of our favorite accessories:

It's really, really hard to get dressed in the winter. You're too cold to move, much less put together a brilliantly stylish outfit. And it's all going to get covered up by a heinous puffer jacket anyway. What's the point?

The point is that looking cute in cold weather is actually possible, and it can make you feel good. You just need a bit of a boost -- some inspiration, perhaps. So we turned to the girls of We Wore What on Instagram this week to find some encouragement. Here are outfit ideas we're copying this January!

Here, this should help:

Malia Obama's Two Buns Are A Great Plane Hairstyle (PHOTOS)

Navigating airports is pretty much the worst -- especially these days -- but at least we now have new hairstyle inspiration for all of our plane trips, courtesy of Malia Obama.

The president's 15-year-old daughter joined her father and younger sister Sasha for a flight on Marine One yesterday, thus ending her two-week holiday in Hawaii. Even though her vacation was over, Malia still managed to have some fun with her hairstyle, wearing her hair in two buns. The result was surprisingly enviable for teenagers and non-teenagers alike. (Take notes, Miley.)

We've been noticing the Princess Leia-inspired hairdo more and more recently, but we think Malia could totally make this a trend... or at the very least, inspire us to give two buns a try the next time we want to get our hair out of the way during a long flight.

Will Smith Skydives With Tyrese And Crown Prince of Dubai

Will Smith certainly takes care of the important people in his life.

Smith pulled out all the stops for longtime friend and fellow singer/actor Tyrese's 35th birthday. He arranged for the two of them to meet with Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, during a recent trip to the United Arab Emirates. The trio spent a day at Inflight Dubai, an indoor skydiving center.

Tyrese thanked Smith, whom he calls his mentor and family, and encouraged his Instagram followers to follow Maktoum's page as he posted photos and video of the three spinning, levitating and flying through the air in the facility's vertical air chamber. In his Instagram captions, Tyrese raved about the experience and said that it had changed his life.

Maktoum also drove Smith and Tyrese through the desert to show off his exotic animal collection.

Smith even arranged for he and Tyrese to take a private helicopter ride above the city for an impressive aerial view of the coastal metropolis.

Tyrese is a Grammy nominated singer/songwriter and actor who is known for his roles of Roman Pearce in the "Fast & Furious" series and Robert Epps in the "Transformers" series. Maktoum writes poetry, which he publishes under the name Faz'za.

10 Things You Need To Start Doing For Your Skin This Winter

$
0
0
Let's face it: winter can wreak havoc on our skin. Not only can the season leave us dry and chapped (which can be pretty painful), but the wind, low-humidity and intense indoor heat can also make our complexions appear dull (and who doesn't prefer to be radiant year-round?).

That's why dermatologist and "Forget the Facelift" author Dr. Doris Day stopped by HuffPost Live to share her top skincare secrets to keep our skin soft and smooth from head to toe.

1. Limit Time In The Tub

woman bathtub

While a long, hot bath or shower may seem super appealing after braving the cold, it might not be the best thing for your skin. "You don't want to wash away the protective oils which help lock moisture in," says Day. So get clean quickly (we're talking 15 minutes or less) and opt for warm water when you can stand it.

2. Use A Mild Soap Or Cleanser

woman in shower

'Tis the season to be gentle! Now is not the time for antibacterial soaps or harsh deodorants that strip away natural moisturizers. Stay away from cleansers with strong ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or glycolic acid and reach for those with added oils and fats instead.

Day points out that you don't have to spend an arm and a leg for anything fancy either because drugstore products like Olay and Dove are great options for any budget. No matter which cleanser you choose, you won't want to overdo it: Add the soap to a puff or Clarisonic brush and you'll be able to use less plus get a deep cleansing.

3. Give Yourself A Pat Down

towel bath

After you've scrubbed, Day advises against drying yourself off completely to hold on to precious hydration. Instead of rubbing your skin with a towel, pat or blot your body so that a light layer of water remains.

4. Moisturize Twice A Day

lotion hands face

It's most important to apply lotion after a shower or bath. Whether your second time to slather it on is morning or night, you'll be more likely to reapply if you store a bottle by your bedside. And when it comes to what's in the bottle, Day swears by products like AmLactin because the prescription-strength brand contains both lactic acid and humectants, which remove dead skin cells and pull water inside. Despite the double dose, the cream isn't thick or greasy, so you won't have to worry about ruining your clothes or sheets. (For non-petroleum moisturizers, click here.)

5. Pay Extra Attention Below The Knees

lotion legs

Certainly the face, hands, elbows and heels deserve special treatment, but don't forget to moisturize the rest of your body. Day notes that the skin below your knees actually has less oil glands than other parts (which is why legs can get especially itchy during the winter months), so be sure to hydrate your lower half, too.

6. Supplement (Or Completely Scrap) Hand Sanitizers

hand sanitizer

Day isn't a big fan of hand sanitizers. First, they're very drying, so she recommends following up with hand cream if you must use them. One reason to reconsider before you go for your next pump: The FDA is starting to question the efficacy of antibacterial products compared to plain old soap and water.

Regardless of how you're disinfecting, you don't want to do it too frequently -- even during flu season. Day explains that our skin was designed to handle bacteria and infection (it has its own natural defense system, which is better than anything money can buy), so constantly cleansing could be doing more harm than good. Definitely head to the sink before eating or after a trip to the restroom, but don't go crazy or it could be a disservice. If you really want to prevent getting sick, the key is to keep your hands away from your face.

7. Invest In A Humidifier

humidifier

To combat the effects of Mother Nature's elements and man's manufactured heat, a humidifier can do wonders. If you turn one on in your bedroom while you catch your zzzs, your skin will be more moisturized and you'll be able to breathe easier as well. Bionaire has several models that won't break the bank, but believe it or not, Day suggests you can also try a DIY version: Fill a soup pot with water and leave it on the radiator overnight.

8. Sleep

woman sleep in bed

As if we at HuffPost could praise the benefits of sleep any more, Day agrees that getting a full eight hours is a dream come true for your skin. From condition to tone, well-rested skin is more beautiful-looking skin.

9. Load Up On H2O

drink water

By hydrating from the inside, your skin will be plumper and firmer and repair itself better, so drink up! Down several glasses a day, and for optimal results, Day stresses moisturizing often as well - the hyaluronic acid in your skin and in your lotion will help hold water, leaving your skin elastic and vibrant.

10. Eat Right

avocado pomegranate

As the old saying goes, "You are what you eat." And Day says foods with essential fatty acids like avocado and antioxidant-rich foods like pomegranate and pumpkin give your skin increased protection, immunity and resistance to the elements. A nutritious diet = healthier skin.

The Queen Doesn't Like Prince Harry's Beard -- Go Figure

$

Ladies may love Prince Harry's beard, but let it be known that the Queen is not amused.

The British monarch has reportedly asked her grandson to shave the overgrown stubble he's been sporting since his recent trek to Antarctica. "She doesn't mind royal men growing beards when they are away in the Armed Forces or out in the wilds like Harry was in the Antarctic, but she expects them to be clean-shaven when they get home," a "royal insider" told Express. "Royal staff are not supposed to grow beards or mustaches and she probably thinks it is difficult to enforce that rule when her own grandson has a beard."

Luckily, it seems the rest of the family likes Harry's beard -- it is a "royal tradition," after all. According to Express, Zara Phillips has even started referring to the 29-year-old dreamboat as "Prince Hairy." But Harry's rebellious streak only goes so far (most of the time), and he plans to shave it off... after his girlfriend, Cressida Bonas, sees it.

Of course, we're taking this insider info with a big grain of noble salt. But to be fair, we really can't imagine that the Queen is into the scruffy look.

See how we got here:

Kristin Chenoweth On Her Pixie Cut: 'It's Freeing' (VIDEO)

Broadway beauty Kristin Chenoweth is known for her big voice and her long, golden locks -- so fans were shocked to see her sporting a short new 'do recently. In this online exclusive, Chenoweth tells "Oprah: Where Are They Now?" why she chopped it off.

"Women know our hair is our crown," Chenoweth says. "I've had a lot of hair extension mishaps. One went up in fire once, one crawled upon itself -- it was bonded the wrong way -- people who wear extensions know what I'm talking about."

"I had long hair, I've lived with it for a long time -- but I just thought, I've played a lot of different roles and I want to continue to keep reinventing myself," Chenoweth says.

Though she's still getting used to the new cut, Chenoweth says she's had a positive response.

"It's freeing," she says with a smile. "I don't know how long I'll keep it, but I like it."

"Oprah: Where Are They Now?" airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.
