Negative Space Nails Tutorial: Get Pixie Lott's Look with #ManicureMonday

Pixie Lott has been getting rave reviews for her starring role in the latest production of Puttin' On The Ritz, but it's not the only thing going down well with her fans.

The stylish singer took to Instagram yesterday to show off her new manicure, rocking the negative space trend - in which part of the nail is left free of polish.

Want to get this futuristic mani look at home? As part of our new Manicure Monday series, we've enlisted Lott's nail artist to show you how.

The Mama Do songstress's talons were created at Shoreditch salon Imarni Nails, where mega talented artists bring styles straight from the catwalk to the nail bar.

Stars like FKA Twigs, Daisy Lowe, Lily Allen and Charli XCX are also major fans.

Salon owner and the woman behind Pixie Lott's awesome nails, Imarni herself, told HuffPost UK Style how she did it:

"The look I created on Pixie Lott’s nails is actually really simple and easy to create at home!", she said.

"I started by prepping nails with Ciaté Marula Oil to soften cuticles then pushed them back with a cuticle stick to tidy nails and create a neat space for the manicure.

"The manicure itself was created with Red Carpet Manicure, which is a gel manicure you can use at home, in the shade White Hot.

"I painted the whole nail and then created the cut out negative space section using a Nail Art Striping Brush.

"You can use this to create any negative space shapes you like, I chose these curved, angular shapes which have a sixties retro feel.

"If you don’t want to use a gel you could use a regular nail polish such as Ciaté Paint Pot in Snow Virgin, or you could come into my salon at Box Park, Imarni Nails, where we can create the look for you!"

"Just Kiss Me, Don't Ask." Female Students Campaign Against 'Vulgar' Lipstick Ad

Students from an all-girls school in Australia have set up a campaign against a cosmetics company over a lipstick advert which tells men to kiss girls without their consent.

A Change.org petition was started by 19-year-old student, Alexandria Mourelatos, who previously attended Fintona Girls' School in Balwyn, Melbourne, in response to the ad by Klara Cosmetics.

Mourelatos and her fellow students started the petition calling on the company to immediately remove the makeup advert that includes the headline: 'Just kiss me don't ask'.

The petition states: "The ads essentially tell impressionable young girls that you're only attractive if someone cant help but launch at you and kiss you without consent. It encourages them to define female attractiveness in the most vulgar way possible."

sd

Mourelatos claimed that although it is just one ad campaign, this could encourage a trend of promoting rape and sexual violence. She said: "One ad might not make a difference but 20 of these ads from 20 companies starts to create a culture and breeds a deformed pre-pubescent psyche that accepts it." She believes the campaign is encouraging girls to believe that they have no control over what they want, and cannot make decisions for themselves.

The student became aware of the misleading ad after her 17-year-old friend spotted it on display in a Melbourne store in May 2015.
"She posted a picture of the ad, saying that she'd seen it in the city and was disgusted."she told Daily Mail Australia.

"I inboxed her commending her post but said that we needed to do more about it in the form of a petition."

The campaign has proved to be a success, with 13,472 supporters singing the petition. Supporters have cited their reasons for signing the online petition, one petitioner stated, "It's sending the wrong message. How do we educate young girls when this tripe is in ads??."

Rebecca Webb was angered by the message of the ad, claiming it is "Disgusting. Grooming young girls for abuse."

Shane Betts from Pakenham, took a stand against the whole industry, asking: "When will the cosmetics and fashion industries get the message? It's not 1974 any more people!"

Following the petition and the outpour of outrage, the Klara Cosmetics marketing director Daniel Jacob defending the ad, claiming that the company had not initially aimed to target young girls in their advert.

"Saying it's a new ad is quite misleading, it's a false declaration, and [teenage girls] are not our target market at all," he said.

"Our target audience ranges from 21 to 45 year old women who are independent, bold and want to make something of themselves. Our intention was more towards the fact of women being so independent, they can stand up and say 'This is what I expect.'

"'Kiss me don't ask' means she takes what she wants, she's in control and she knows her product really well. She knows a good product and when she needs to use it."

Jacob continued to defend the ad but stated that the company are listening to the response: "We're taking all this feedback on board even though it's from last year. We listen to the feedback but that's the best we can do as a company."

'Boyfriend Material': What to Wear on a First Date

$
0
0
Let's face it a first date is difficult enough for most men without the added worry of what to wear. With this simple advise you can rest assured your style will send the right message when making that all important first impression.

We are seemingly spoiled for choice when it comes to dating in the digital age, so to help you stand out from the crowd, I will show you how your appearance alone can speak volumes before you even utter the first "hello."

We all gravitate towards someone who is confident. The pressure to appear confident on a first date can get the better of even the most self-assured man. The answer to this problem is colour. It so simple but wearing a little bit of colour goes a long way.

Men tend to shy away from colour because mainstream fashion has reserved the pleasure of colour for women's attire. Men were given almost no choice. Luckily today all that has changed.

You've heard the phrase 'real men wear pink' - well I swear by it - and so should you. Be it pink, green, red , or purple a display of colour on a man can act just like the display of brightly coloured plumage on a peacock trying to attract a mate. Trust me - it works!

I'm going to show you that a baby blue suit is your perfect match (even if your date turns out not to be).

This baby blue linen suit from Moss Boss is a casual yet smart suit and the linen is breathable and light-weight- perfect for a hot summer date. I suggest wearing the whole suit if you're coming straight from work to meet your date during the week to give you a sharp professional look.

Pairing it with a crisp granddad white shirt from T.M Lewin, leaving the first button opened, gives the look a laid back vibe. You can choose to wear a nice pair of jeans (like these rolled up Mid Wash Skinny Denim from Next) or shorts should you be meeting your date on the weekend for a more casual outing. Slipping off the jacket and rolling up the sleeves of your shirt is for when the pressures off and your having fun. Loosening up a polished look is key to showing you can be relaxed as well as confident.

Mixing and matching then just becomes a matter of changing your shirt and shoes! Styling the suit with another short sleeve granddad collar navy shirt from FF Clothing gives you a lot of bang for your buck at £8 - paired with Woven Leather Closed Toe Sandal from Dune London you are killing the casual look.

Top tip: Loafers show off the ankle, a part of the body very much overlooked on a man, but one which is significantly attractive if displayed.

That's it! Dress it up with a bow tie or dress it down with jeans; a coloured suit is all you need this summer to look hot and stay cool.

Google And Levi's Project Jacquard Is Turning Your Jeans Into Wearable Computers

    $
    0
    0
Google and Levi have partnered to create a type of interactive cloth that might just be the best material the fashion industry has seen since it was first introduced to denim in the 19th century.

The giants of tech and fashion have joined hands to turn your regular not-so-smart jeans into wearable computers. That's right, your trousers could one day switch on the music on your phone at the stroke of a pocket -- a potential minefield for people who constantly have their hands in their pockets.

Project Jacquard's aim is to transform 'everyday objects such as clothes and furniture... into interactive surfaces.' Oh joy.

So how does a piece of cloth turn into a touch screen?

The answer is two-fold: conductive yarn and sensor grids.

Project Jacquard's yarn looks like the regular bobbins of thread used in home-sewing kits except that it's made from thin, metallic alloys as well as natural and synthetic materials including cotton, polyester and silk.

    project jacquard yarn

In order to convert our hand gestures into meaningful commands, researchers are using small sensors containing tiny circuits 'no larger than the button on a jacket,' to capture touch interactions.

    project jacquard sensor

This small grid sends information from your hand to your phone or any other device and voila -- your jeans have suddenly become wearable computers.

Ivan Poupyrev who is spearheading the project told Wired:

"It’s ridiculous that our clothes don’t already talk to our tech.

"Any time you put your phone into your pocket ...you have a smart jacket… the only problem is they don’t talk to each other. There’s no connection between them. So this work, we can actually kind of close the circuit.”

Jacquard claims the materials are cost effective to produce, a major hurdle that wearable tech is yet to jump over, and based on CNET's demo at Google I/O, the product will be relatively easy to use.

The only problem is that it might be a little too easy to use, especially if you're prone to wiping your hands on your clothes. Oh and you obviously don't want your lower end lighting up every time your hand accidentally brushes your leg.

    Poupyrev acknowledged these challenges saying:

“If you’re serious about it, you know people don’t want to glow like a Christmas tree.

“This is not a technology problem...it’s really a design problem. Design, and cultural understanding.”

Jacquard's offering is the closet we've come to true wearable technology so far, but we may be quite a few embarrassing LED scenarios away from it becoming high street fashion.

Caitlyn Jenner Vanity Fair Cover: The Glam Squad Share Her Beauty Secrets

    $

Caitlyn Jenner made her debut on Vanity Fair's landmark July cover this week, and now the fashion and beauty team behind the shoot have revealed her style secrets.

Jenner posed for a series of stunning photographs by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz.

The glam squad behind Jenner's classic beauty and Old Hollywood style included stylist Jessica Diehl, makeup artist Mark Carrasquillo, hairstylist giant Oribe, and celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann.

"I didn’t want her to look like a man in a dress. I wanted her to look like a beautiful 65-year-old woman," makeup maestro Mark Carrasquillo told Vanity Fair.

Carasquillo created a soft makeup look without the contouring much-loved by the Kardashian clan.

He made the most of Jenner's features - creating a flawless base with Tom Ford Traceless Foundation, Eve Pearl Salmon Concealer and a peachy blusher on her cheeks, by Serge Lutens in Shade No. 2.

The eyebrows were filled in with Estée Lauder Stay-in-Place Brow Lift Duo in Soft Brown, lashes were coated with Estée Lauder More than Mascara in Rich Black and a few individual mink falsies were applied. Very little eyeshadow was used, followed by a flick of Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen in black along the top eyelid.

For the lips, Carasquillo used the Serge Lutens Lip Pencil and the iconic red lipstick Nars Jungle Red to mix it up in one of the shots.

For Jenner's elegant-yet-natural hair, Oribe looked to Cindy Crawford for inspiration, explaining: "I wanted to create a glamorous look that I normally do for any woman, and sexuality was very important in this context."

The hairstylist used cult products from his range including the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray to create volume, and the Oribe Signature Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray to add shine and softness.

    Can Fast Fashion Be Sustainable?

    $
    0
    0
The world of fashion is increasingly under the environmental spotlight as the impact of the industry becomes apparent from pesticides in cotton through to working conditions in Bangladesh. Top of the hit list are fast fashion chains with campaigns questioning whether the pile it high sell it cheap model can be environmental sustainable.

To find out more I headed to Stockholm to interview the leader of H&M Karl-Johan Persson. We embarked on a frank debate with no PR person on-hand to fend off awkward questions. I wasn't expecting this openness.

Fast fashion companies can respond to ethical questions by hiding in the pack or by engaging in debate knowing there will be weaknesses which can be exposed. H&M is firmly in this second category - why? One reason is the heritage of the company which was founded by Karl-Johan Persson's grandfather. He believes this family connection means that short-term financial reasons are not the sole driver of decision-making as there is a deep interest in how healthy the company will be for future generations.

Focus on the longer term was a recurring theme. For instance, H&M is the world's largest purchaser of organic cotton which it claims is a costly choice driven by environmental considerations not financial benefit.

The company has a long-term commitment to working in Bangladesh, Vietnam and Cambodia. How had they reacted to the Rana Plaza disaster that killed 1,129 people? Karl-Johan Persson pointed out that H&M was not present at this factory and had a strong track record of working on fire and building safety. The disaster was tragic but has forced greater collaboration between fashion companies, improved inspection regimes and secured more investment. This included a new safety accord which H&M was one of the first companies to sign.

Exploration of the supply chain revealed huge complexity highlighting the dangers of black and white analysis. Factories in developing countries supply a range of companies from high-end brands through to mass market. Shop price tags may vary but working conditions under which they are produced are the same. It is not uncommon for one factory to be supplying up to 20 brands. Creating change requires collaboration: not easy when some brands would rather not highlight their supply chain - H&M has an open supplier list. I feel certain that most UK consumers are unaware of this and assume garment workers making high-priced top brand clothing have different working conditions to their fast fashion equivalents.

Complexity makes it difficult to get a clear grasp of whether H&M is a leader so I asked Karl-Johan Persson to succinctly tell his customers why his claims are believable. He highlighted meetings with the Prime Ministers of Cambodia and Bangladesh pushing for increased wages which directly affects costs. He feels that working at this national level is essential as it can be counter-productive to just focus on the pay of garment factory workers. He believes that carrying out unilateral pay rises for selected employees driven by western consumer campaigns can do more damage than good leading to corruption and resentment. Instead the country's overall pay structure must be respected.

I sensed a growing frustration that H&M was being lumped together as a fast fashion baddie when Karl-Johan Persson clearly feels they are ahead of the pack in certain areas. Why was this? He accepted that H&M has much to do and needs to be better at telling their story. However he feels more can be done for customers to make informed decisions. He called for governments to make sustainability reporting mandatory for companies above a certain size. He wants customers to be able to look at a hand tag on a garment and immediately see the social and environmental impact of a product and H&M is working towards this through the Higg Index initiative. The predominant message was facts rather than emotion is needed in the debate.

Finally our conversation shifted to the vexed question of consumption. Karl-Johan Persson has strong views. For him economic growth is essential to take people out of poverty. He referenced a World Bank report stating that growth in Bangladesh could be as high as eight percent per year for the next ten years with the creation of one million new jobs. The report highlighted that continued rapid growth in the textile industry is a prerequisite if this forecast is to become reality.

I challenged whether this growth could ever be sustainable. He replied that H&M wants to grow but with 100% of their energy from renewable resources and with new technologies that create a close loop economy which don't create environmental harm.

The challenge for H&M is that these ambitions have led to consumers placing less value on the clothes they buy, leading to more waste. The frenzied madness of Black Friday perfectly captures this consumerism in action. It will be intriguing to see how H&M squares this circle. How adventurous will they become in actively engaging customers in their sustainability campaigns? Can they persuade people to truly value the cheap clothes they buy extending their life and ensuring they are recycled at end of use.

The openness of Karl-Johan Persson and his willingness to debate the wider impact of the company is impressive. The heritage of the company places it in a strong position to embed sustainability into its strategy and big steps have already been taken in certain areas. However there has to be a question whether the overall business model can be sustainable. If it can, H&M will have to be even bolder and drag a large number of laggard fast fashion companies with them.

Johnny Depp has been announced today as the new face of Christian Dior Parfums.

This is the first time ever the actor has agreed to be the face of a men's fragrance, and what better way than to join the likes of Charlize Theron and Natalie Portman at the French fashion house.

The House of Dior has enlisted François Demachy, the nose behind a number of their fragrances including Dior Homme and Miss Dior Cherie, to compose the new cologne.

    johnny depp

Depp is currently on set reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow for the fifth Pirates Of The Caribbean film, but by the looks of it he managed to ditch the bandana to shoot the first official campaign image (above).

Nothing is yet known about the fragrance itself but if Johnny was willing to put his name to it, we're guessing it smells pretty good (or like rum, treasure, the open seas etc etc).

The 51-year-old actor has also been busy filming with a star-studded ensemble cast in Rob Marshall’s Into the Woods and will next be seen starring in Scott Cooper’s Black Mass, slated for release this coming September.

The new Instagram update is about to turn your favourite app into a virtual shopping centre (we can almost hear our bank balances draining).

There will now be the option to shop products in-app - making life simpler for fashion lovers everywhere.

On Tuesday Instagram owners announced in a blog post they will be introducing a "Shop Now" button to promotional posts, eliminating the need for users to click through to the website in a brand's bio.

Facebook, which bought Instagram in 2012, also announced plans to open the Instagram feed to all advertisers - from local clothing stores to high street giants.

Brands will be able to target ads to the service's 300 million users based on interest, age, location, and gender in an aim to deliver ads suited to your individual tastes.

The downside? Expect to see more ads than ever before *cries into smartphone*.

Calling On All Fashion Houses to Pay Interns

    $

    0
I want to make a call to all fashion houses to pay their interns.

I run a start-up fashion label in South London, financed with my own money. An army of unpaid interns would make my life that much easier and would keep my costs that much lower. But I won't do it. Every one of my staff is paid. It is simply the right thing to do.

According to HMRC an internship is a form of work placement or work experience usually undertaken by university or school students. The legal status attached to an internship depends on whether the intern qualifies as a worker, volunteer or employee.

An intern denoted to all intents and purposes as a volunteer has no right to a minimum wage or other employee rights such as sick pay, holiday, etc. They may receive travel and subsistence expenses but only proper classification as a worker or employee would confer full employment rights.

In the fashion industry, graduate internships are a necessary pre-requisite to full-time employment. Graduates need to demonstrate practical and technical proficiency and working as an intern is often the only means to do this.

The problem they face is that most employers do not pay their graduate interns.

Most of my staff is made up of relatively recent graduates. Almost all have undertaken post university unpaid internships. Some have even worked without travel or subsistence expenses which implies they have effectively paid for the privilege of working for free.

I have been told of fashion houses that basically run on the labour of free interns.

Brands may argue that they are simply taking advantage of a convenient loophole or just doing what everyone else does. I would beg to differ.

To volunteer, and therefore qualify as an unpaid intern, the individual can't be held to conditions that would normally constitute a contract of employment, e.g. the requirement to work a set number of hours per week. However, fixed hours and day is what is usually expected of them. And yet still they are not awarded either employee status or any associated legal rights.

Aside from the fact that employers seem to be walking a rather precarious legal tightrope not paying people who work for you is just plain wrong.

Aside from any morality issue, the main problem with this is that fashion interns with limited financial means often have to walk away from their industry of choice, from the profession they have invested years of their lives learning and fine-tuning.

Access to debt will be almost impossible for practically all unemployed graduates, especially those already bearing the burden of student loans. Without wealthy and generous parents or patrons, which is the purview only of the privileged few, graduates would have no option but to look outside their chosen profession for paid work.

Fashion-related and other creative degrees are also not so easily transferable, certainly not in the same way as the more conventional arts or science subjects.

This leaves fashion graduates with even less choice.

And those graduates who do choose to take up an unpaid role are often one of many within a firm. I have heard of brands with nine unpaid interns per employee.

Interns need proper experience to build their CVs. They need to be developed. Having an overabundance of interns can often lead to in-fighting, simply because they're all looking to bag the best experience. And discord always leads to lower productivity.

Not paying interns engenders the creation of an elitist industry and risks the creation of discordant - and therefore less productive - teams. It can also result in the loss of talent.

The late Alexander McQueen is hailed as one of the UK's greatest ever fashion designers, renowned the world over. He was brought up in a council house in east London and started off as a paid apprentice.

It would be a travesty for a new mastery such as his to be lost to us all.

How To Keep Your Hair Clean At A Festival: Tips For Washing, Styling And Festival Braids

Looking groomed at a festival is no easy feat. With sleepless nights, tent-head and flying cups of wee to contend with, it's pretty much a given your hair's going to be looking a little less than its usual best.

Luckily there is a style solution! We've tried and tested products, enlisted some expert help and relived our own beauty mishaps to create this day-by-day rundown on how to get (and keep) fab festival hair.

    Pre-Festival Prep

    hair
Ojon Damage Reverse Plus (£19), Kérastase Essential Revitalising Balm (£32)

    The last shower.

It's time to savour all that running hot water before you enter the land of baby wipe hose downs. Take your time and treat yo'self because you and your hair won't be this clean again for a good few days.

Pack in more of a punch by applying a pre-shower moisturising treatment like Ojon Damage Reverse. Slather dirty locks in the rich, velvety balm, wait 30-minutes and follow with your usual hair washing routine.

Prevent damage and breakage at the festival by using a deep conditioning masque like Kérastase Essential Revitalising Balm. The opulent texture and luxurious scent will leave you feeling positively pampered.

Top tip: Wash hair at the last possible minute before you set off and leave free of any products to avoid adding extra oil or residue.

    Day One

    festival hair
Philip Kingsley One More Day Dry Shampoo (£14)

Stay away from people throwing cups of wee, these people are not your friends (note: Pete Doherty and Kate Moss are probably not these people).

Avoiding standing near the front of crowds is the best way to steer clear of this unfortunate fate, but a less mind-numbingly boring way of doing it is simply to wear a hat when you're watching a band.

Your hair may start to get slightly greasy at this point, but it's nothing a quick spritz of dry shampoo can't fix. Even if you're showing no signs of an oil slick, spray it on anyway while screaming like a prematurely-balding Aidan with his Rogaine in Sex and the City. "IT'S PREVENTATIVE!"

Philip Kingsley One More Day is the ultimate dry shampoo: leaving hair fresh, odourless and subtly volumised. It's also packed with unique scalp cleansing ingredients to keep flakes and irritation at bay.

Top tip: Try not to touch your hair. Getting handsy both increases sebum production and transfers all that grimy festival dirt to your newly-washed 'do.

    Day Two

    bleach london braids

It's time to get braiding. If there's one thing greasy hair is actually better for (apart from disgusting your friends and family), it's braids, like these 90s styles from Bleach London.

There's also no harm keeping the style in all weekend if you fancy it - not only will it get messier and even more on trend, plaits come in pretty handy for avoiding knots when you've slept on your shorts as a makeshift pillow.

Sam Burnett, founder of London salon Hare & Bone, said: "Braids are big news every season but this Summer they stand out - it's time to move away from the signature single side plait and switch up your style with multiple braids and different textures for a fresh approach."

Follow Burnett's simple three-step guide for a festival fishtail braid:

    1. Work one or two fishtail braids either side of your face.

    2. Wrap both braids around to the back of your head and secure with grips for a face framing feel.

    3. Finish with a blast of dry shampoo for a matt finish.

    Day Three

    festival hair
Soap & Glory Mini Glad Hair Day Shampoo (£2.50), Tangle Teezer Original (£10.60)

So you need to wash your hair but the hot water's run out (or you're just really, really hungover and can't face the queue). The solution? Just settle for doing your fringe.

Create a makeshift shower outside your tent with bottle of water and a travel-sized shampoo, like this sweet-smelling one from Soap & Glory. Simply lather in your hands, apply a tiny bit to the roots of your fringe and rinse out.

If your hair is starting to resemble some sort of birds nest nightmare zone, feat not! Try a Tangle Teezer. There's a reason this professional detangler earned its cult status - gliding through the most matted of hair with (seemingly magical) ease.

    Post-Festival Damage Control

    festival hair
Macadamia Healing Oil Spray (£13.40) Bumble and bumble Sunday Shampoo (£18.50)

    The aftermath.

At this point you'll probably be in need of some sort of industrial strength detangling spray. If so, Macadamia Healing Oil is right up your street (seriously, this stuff gets out knots like nothing else).

Rinse away all that dirt and grime along with the sins of the weekend with Bumble and bumble Sunday Shampoo, a clarifying treatment to detox your hair and leave it as fresh as when you left.
