The Duchess of Cambridge proved she still reigns supreme in the style stakes on Sunday when she attended Princess Charlotte's christening dressed in a McQueen dress coat.

The 33-year-old completed the look with a white feathered hat, teardrop earrings and a pair of her signature nude court shoes.

It's not the first time The Duchess of Cambridge has worn McQueen to a momentous event. A queen of sartorial habit, Kate also wore McQueen to Prince George's christening, opting for a cream ruffled suit that perfectly complimented George's Honiton lace christening gown.

Princess Charlotte also wore the hand made replica of the Royal Christening Robe, a copy of the 172 year-old lace dress first worn by Queen Victoria's firstborn daughter in 1841.

Adidas Creates A Trainer Made Entirely Out Of Garbage Dumped In The Ocean

Adidas has unveiled a pretty special pair of trainers made entirely out of rubbish from the ocean.

As one of the founding members of Parley for the Oceans, the German sports brand has been using its influence to further communication and education surrounding waste in the oceans.

adidas

Of course to highlight the problem at hand the brand decided to do what it knows best; make a pair of trainers.

The upper is made entirely from yarns and filaments that were reclaimed or recycled from ocean waste.

Activist organisation Sea Shepherd spent 110-days tracking an illegal poaching vessel during which they were able to recover nets which in turn were then used in the trainers.

This isn't just an empty statement though, technologies in the sector have advanced enough that reclaimed and recycled waste will become the foundation for a consumer-facing range of products that Adidas actually plans to launch to the public later this year.

Meet Elle Goldie, The 22-Year-Old Student Changing The Face Of Mastectomy Lingerie

A soon-to-be London College of Fashion graduate has launched a beautiful range of underwear for women who have undergone mastectomies.

Elle Goldie, 22, was inspired to design a range of post-op underwear after her grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago.

Goldie's Hummingbird range is designed to be feminine and sexy - something Goldie felt was lacking from a lot of post-op underwear ranges.

One of Goldie's mastectomy lingerie sets

She told Huffington Post UK: "My nan, Marlene, is such a glamorous, fun-loving lady and it was really hard for all of us.

"As I have a degree in lingerie design, my nan and I spoke a lot about her options with post-mastectomy lingerie.

"The choices are very limited, old-fashioned and quite honestly just ugly.

"She felt as if she was being punished and her struggle was being prolonged.

"I really wanted to create a bra that she would feel comfortable in, feminine and more like herself again, and start to celebrate her body again.

"She and so many other women have gone through such a massive change and have survived.

"It is to be celebrated that their bodies are tough and feminine."

ellen goldie hummingbird

Kim Norman, who underwent a single mastectomy in 2007 after battling with breast cancer said:

"There just isn't a very good selection of underwear available, luxury or otherwise.

"Loads of brands say that they cater for women who have had mastectomies, but there's always a very small range of two or three bras to choose from and they rarely go past a DD cup.

"They're often really frumpy, t-shirt bra styles, which isn't what you want when you're trying to regain your femininity."

Goldie spotted the huge gap in the market whilst studying for a BA in Fashion Contour, and now she's about to graduate.

Speaking about what influences her bold designs, Goldie said: "I am extremely inspired by women in general, we are all so different, strong and inspiring."

I'm Just Looking Out for My 60-Year-Old Self

$

0
No really, I am. When you look at twenty somethings that love beauty, skincare and fitness, what do you see? Are you one of them? Is it all about the here and now, looking good and feeling good, or is it so much more than that?

It is for me. I'm a twenty-something and I love beauty, skincare and fitness, but not because it makes me feel good (well, that probably helps a little). My obsession stems from something much, much deeper than that. I really am just looking out for my 60-Year-Old self.

I've always been a planner. I like to know what I'm doing days or weeks (sometimes, months) in advance - much to the annoyance of my loved ones. I try to live in the moment and even though I do manage it every now and again, I'm not all that good at it. I like to be prepared. Things should have a time and a place and I guess, to me, that also applies to beauty, skincare and fitness.

As children, we drink our milk and eat our vegetables to grow big and strong. As teens, we follow the advice of our elders, rushing to become adults. But when we get there, hitting our mid-twenties, what's next? Not everyone tells you to look out for your older-self.

But I always will.

I definitely look after my skin for agelessness. Despite suffering with acne, it's the early signs of ageing that gets to me the most. Blemishes are easy to treat once you know how, but fine lines and wrinkles - they require so much more once they set in. So, I'm doing my best to hold that off for as long as possible.

Years ago, I was that terrified I felt that I'd definitely look to cosmetic surgery as soon as I needed it. Now, I'm firmly on the prevention is better than cure fence.

And why shouldn't I be?

I write about skincare, nutrition and health for a living and have built quite the obsession with it. Taking care of my body so that breezes its way through life, as much as possible, has become a bit more than just fun for me and nutrition plays a big part in that.

Finding foods that are good for collagen production has become a bit of a mission and I'd quite happily eat an avocado a day to keep the cosmetic doctor away.

It's the same with water. It's not easy to up your intake, but if you just give it a try, it becomes addictive. Yes running to the bathroom a few times an hour isn't always that glamorous, but do you know what is? Healthy, glowing skin and a well-functioning body. It really is true what they say, water works!

I fully intend on only letting one thing give away my age as I grow - my boyfriend (or, hopefully, Husband by then). He tans well and loves the sun, but refuses to take my advice on skincare - opting for the more rustic way of looking after himself.

But as I opened with, this isn't all about beauty, it's just as much about healthcare as it is skincare.

Sometimes, beauty and fitness efforts can seem superficial and while I'm not going to defend or shame them (that's definitely not what this post is about), I can't speak for everyone, but what I will say is - there's a reason for mine.

I want to be able to run, dance and still do yoga as I age. I want to take care of my body so that it stays strong and healthy throughout the whole of my life. I don't ever want to reach a point in life where I look back and wish I'd taken better care of myself and with the way I live, I really don't think I will.

So the next time I scatter my love of pizza with a whole lot of greens, proteins and juices to balance out my biggest weakness, I'll know I've only got me in mind.

Are you planning ahead just like I am? I'd love to know if you have any beauty, skincare and fitness tips to share!

While stripping off for the cameras in front of a room full of people would fill most of us with nothing but awkwardness, it's just another day in the life of a supermodel.

But in the August issue of W magazine some of the world's most famous fashion models have opened up about what it's really like to bare it all.

Shot by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott, the editoral called Privacy Settings stars Barbara Palvin, Joan Smalls, Bella Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Anna Ewers, Irina Shayk, Lily Aldridge, Doutzen Kroes and Chrissy Teigen.

w magazine

Barbara Palvin

"Even though I'm not very confident with all this getting naked or anything, I think when they put me in front of the camera I just change and I'm playing a character, it's not like I've got to be myself."

Bella Hadid

"I like to be comfortable in my own skin, so it's cool to like be able to shoot like that, I mean sometimes it's uncomfortable but depending on who you're shooting with, it's pretty nice."

w magazine

Emily Ratajkowski

"Shooting in the nude is normal, I mean, I don't know - I think you get used to it and if you have a good team around you and everyone making you feel comfortable, that's all that matters."

Irina Shayk

"You have to be really confident with your body, you have to work out before the shoot of course, that's why I woke up early today and went to the gym and then you have to just know your best angles and feel comfortable. You had to love your body."

rosie huntington whiteley

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

"They [Mert and Marcus] make you feel very womanly and empowered which I think is the most important thing when your shooting nude, there's always a sense of empowerment to it."

Chrissy Teigan

"I'm the most comfortable in my own skin, literally just my own skin. I don't know what it is but I think sometimes pieces of clothing can be unflattering. I actually am better in less clothing, it's a blessing and a curse."

2. The square shapes were painted on using a white nail polish (I used Red Carpet Manicure White Hot polish) and a striping brush."

3. Next, I used a sponge to apply shimmy shades from the Red Carpet Manicure Cinderella collection to create a glitter fade and outlined the squares using striping tape."

4. "Finally I added gems and encapsulated it all with a topcoat (I used Red Carpet Manicure Brilliance Topcoat)."

Kim Murray Hair Tutorial: How To Get A Beautiful Blow Dry At Home In 6 Simple Steps

Kim Murray rarely has a hair out of place, even when battling with breezy conditions court side as she watches her husband Andy Murray play at Wimbledon.

For anyone whose hair isn't naturally straight and voluminous, achieving a look that is sleek and glossy, but still full of movement can be tricky.

But British hairdresser, Nicky Clarke has shared his styling secrets so you can recreate Murray's look at home...

kim murray
Murray wears ‘Sabitri’ In Red Rose Print and Navy - £575 from Beulah London.

1. Take diagonal sections beginning at the nape of neck and comb through a light mousse (we used Nicky Clarke Flexible Hold Mousse).

2. To achieve a healthy shine, add some smoothening cream throughout the hair as you comb through large sections and squeeze into the hair. Avoid the roots to avoid build up which can leave hair greasy.

3. Blast the hair with a hairdryer to take out all the moisture.

4. Section off the fringe area in a triangle section. Using a vent brush, move the dryer from side to side so there is no natural part to the hair. Use a small round brush and blow dry the ends downwards. Avoid the roots. Volume will naturally appear due to the movement created by the vent brush.

5. To create that little bit of movement, set the hair in heated rollers (we used Nicky Clarke’s Classic Compact rollers). Leave these in as long as possible to create optimum bounce to the hair.

6. Release the rollers and brush out using a wide tooth comb for separation.

After all of that, your mane should be able to withstand any number of hair-pullingly tense moments...

Victoria's Secret Beauty Secrets: Alessandra Ambrosio Sets Her Hair On Fire To Fix Split Ends

$

Victoria's Secret angel Alessandra Ambrosio tousled beachy waves often draw a lot of compliments.

But the admiring looks were replaced with concerned comments recently when she she shared an Instagram snap of a hairdresser singeing her locks with a candle.

Turns out, she was having a Brazilian treatment called Valeterapia, where split ends are burnt off using an open flame.

Friday treat @lacesandhair @crisdioslaces #hairtreatment #hidratação #multivitaminas

A photo posted by @alessandraambrosio on

The stylist starts by twisting dry hair so the split ends poke out. They then move the flame along the twist to burn off flyaways.

If you can get past the smell of burning hair, the treatment supposedly cauterizes split ends, opening up the follicles to make hair more receptive to conditioning. All without taking anything off the length.

A recent survey by the British Association of Beauty Therapists and Cosmetology revealed that half of Britons would be more likely to try a beauty treatment if one of their favourite celebrities had also had it, and we must admit we were pretty curious after seeing Ambrosio's snap.

Ale's hair was treated by professional hairstylist Cris Dios at Laces salon in São Paulo, Brazil - and trying this technique at home is certainly not safe.

How To Look Like A Victoria's Secret Angel

Hair stylist Bryn from London salon Easton Regal told HuffPost UK Style they wouldn't recommend the treatment:

“We believe it is a gimmick and that the best way to look after your hair is by using professional shampoos and conditioners and heat protecting sprays alongside regular haircuts.

"But if you really want to try this process, I would highly recommend going to a professional who is familiar with the technique.

"It requires control and a trained eye to know where to start and stop.

"The procedure apparently seals the hair and helps it to maintain moisture, however we believe the hair must be weakened from this procedure as it would using any heated appliance.

"We would still recommend regular trims for clients wanting to keep their hair in tip-top condition rather than this technique. Like any treatment it’s not for everyone, but if split ends aren’t removed the hair will split higher causing more damage.”

Anabel Kingsley, hair care expert and daughter of Philip Kingsley added: "There would be absolutely no advantage to doing this. Subjecting hair to the an open flame is simply going to burn it, dry it out and result in more breakage. There's also the risk of your hair catching on fire."

Nothing in the whole range costs more than £35 (and you could seriously convince your mates it might be Burberry).

Paying homage to the bohemian, seventies trends on the recent catwalks, there's faux fur coats and shearling gilets, cosy cable knits, Victoriana-style dresses, wool ponchos, knee-high boots, studded leather jackets and lashings of lace.

There's Nothing Wrong With Getting a Bit of Cosmetic Help if It Makes You Feel Better?

$
0
0
If I read about another celebrity who states, 'I'd never have anything done cosmetically' I will eat my hat. Both smug and annoying it suggests those that do are somehow lesser. Some people are blessed genetically, but why be so quick to judge those who seek a little help.

The rise in popularity of these non-invasive cosmetic procedures is not too dissimilar as getting your hair coloured, or your nails done, or getting a fake tan for a night out to cover up your blotchy pale skin. If every woman stopped colouring their hair we would all see the difference.

If people get some cosmetic assistance what's the problem? It's their body and face. I'm thinking of someone suffering from depression who's spent too many hours with a furrowed brow making them look permanently angry and wants to try Botox just to soften the lines a little. Is there anything wrong with wanting to look a bit fresher and happier?

The lines on our faces create a map of your life and it might be interesting for others to look at, but when you see your reflection every morning it's not always a pleasant sight. If filler under your eyes means they are less sunken, then it means less time putting on make up to conceal them and less people saying, 'Oh my god, you look exhausted.' When actually you are not exhausted, you just have dark circles genetically.

These treatments, which are simple, relatively affordable, fast, and now ubiquitous can make people feel better about themselves. Just ensure you go to a reputable clinic with proper certification; there are cowboys out there with accompanying horror stories.

This same celebrity was dismissive of women who undergo breast augmentation surgery. If someone goes for ginormous implants I admit they can look weird, but what about a woman who has had breast cancer and needs breast reconstruction and implants? That woman is just trying to reclaim her body ravaged by a disease. And what about women who choose to breastfeed, not for a few months, but perhaps a year or two, with each consecutive child. The toll on the breasts is often not spoken about and tacitly accepted. After breastfeeding, the breast tissue atrophies leaving empty sacks where there were once ample bosoms (not in all cases). And sometimes the nipples can droop. Are women expected to just love and embrace their bodies? How can they when, often, all we see are pert, pneumatic breasts on giant billboards?

Working in Asia, I see women who are practically half naked, in shorts, with their legs out and their hair perfected. You will not see a hairy leg in sight; laser hair removal is big business. There's massive pressure on women to look a certain way and I can see, just by scanning a room that most have bought into the beauty concept, including myself. I take care over my appearance and want to look good for my age, it's something that was drilled into me since I modelled from the age of 16. When I look at old modelling photos, I see how lighting can transform me into someone other. I know it is an illusion, but it is still intoxicating to look at and has made me understand the allure of image and surface.

2015-07-06-1436195689-7054993-RTIMG_11701.jpg

On the day of the shoot I was tired but it was airbrushed away to make me look in my 20's, I was 36 at the time.

When you walk through an airport billboards are screaming at you to buy expensive products so you, too, can look like the airbrushed perfection they are selling. It's a fabricated manipulated con but the images are impossible to ignore sticking in our consciousness in a pernicious way that can make women, especially, feel wholly inadequate.

If we lived in a society were we saw a diverse range of faces and bodies: old, wrinkly, black, brown, yellow, saggy, short, tall, thin, fat, oblong, this silent quest for perfection, that many of us tacitly accept and unwittingly pursue, would not be so pronounced. There is pressure, on men and women, to look good. If you look good life will be better - that's the theory. It would be preferable if the emphasis were more on how you behave, your personality and how you treat others. Unfortunately, how you look matters - at every level of our lives, professional and personal.

But let's not be so dismissive of people who undergo such cosmetic procedures? Just don't over do it because who wants to look like a clown. Getting a small dose of help, now and then, is just fine.

The iconic model, who shot to fame in the 1970s after marrying photographer David Bailey, revealed she stays in shape by hitting the gym four times a week.

But despite looking amazing, Helvin has said that it might be time for her to retire - meaning this recent shoot for lingerie brand Aliza Reger may be her last.

19 Fashion Struggles Only A Londoner Can Understand

L'Oreal's Helen Mirren Adverts Cleared By Advertising Standards Authority After Airbrushing Complaints

$

L’Oreal have been cleared by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), following viewer complaints over an advert featuring Dame Helen Mirren.

The veteran actress starred in a TV ad for the beauty brand’s Age Perfect products, and the clip featured numerous close-ups of her stunning skin, while she provided a voiceover.

Watch the ad in question above...

“It’s the science I trust to help me look like me,” the voiceover declared. “Nourish and indulge your skin, and show those age spots who’s boss. Grow another year bolder. Look and feel more radiant. Our perfect age is now. So are we worth it? More than ever.”

However some viewers objected to the promo, with one accusing the brand of using “post-production techniques” to change the actress’s face, reports the Guardian.

L’Oreal countered that they had made efforts to ensure 69-year-old Helen looked as she does at red carpet events, and the ASA has now ruled that the brand did not make any false claims, or mislead potential customers.

helen mirren
Helen at a recent event

A statement on the matter read: “The ASA considered that consumers would expect Helen Mirren to have been professionally styled and made-up for the photo shoot, and to have been photographed and filmed professionally in flattering conditions.”

The ASA also investigated the print ads, and ruled: “We understood that some retouching had been carried out but that the changes were minor and did not relate in any way to the claims made for the product.

“We considered this approach was acceptable so long as the resulting effect was not one which misleadingly exaggerated the effect the product was capable of achieving.

“With regard to [the TV ad] … We noted that wrinkles were clearly visible on Ms Mirren’s face in both ads, including across her forehead and around her mouth.”

helen mirren
Helen at the 2015 Tony Awards

“We considered that the recent press images of Ms Mirren would have reflected a similar degree of professional styling and makeup as the images in the ad, without any post-production amendments, and that her appearance in the ads was comparable to those more candid images.

“We therefore considered that the ads had not altered Ms Mirren’s appearance in a way that would exaggerate the likely effect that could be achieved by consumers’ use of the product, and concluded that the ads were not misleading.”

Helen began working with L’Oreal back in February, and in her first campaign, she delivered their classic ‘because I’m worth it’ line a twist, instead stating: “So are we worth it? More than ever.”

Jane Fonda was L’Oreal’s previous age-cream spokesperson, and she was also 69 years old when she began filming ads. Jealous? Us? Never…

Naomi Campbell has had an impressive 28-year career in fashion, with countless campaigns, over 500 magazine covers and an array of catwalk appearances - and she's not planning on retiring anytime soon.

In a new video interview series called Subjective, the 45-year-old supermodel discusses the lack of racial diversity in the fashion industry and how she feels it's her duty to fight for equal representation.

"I don’t even like to use the word racism. I call it more territorialism, where they just don’t want to budge. They don’t want to change their ideal and be more open-minded to just booking a beautiful girl regardless of colour," she told photographer Nick Knight.

Campbell, alongside fellow supermodel Iman and fashion activist Bethann Hardison, has been working on the campaign Balance Diversity, which notes how many models of colour were used in every runway show that occurs.

She revealed in the interview that in all 2014 runway shows only 6.8% of models were of color and some designers weren't using black models on their catwalks at all.

Campbell, who first started modeling at the tender age of 15, also revealed that she doesn't plan on retiring until the fashion industry changes for the better.

“I didn’t work 28 years for it to be a trend. That's one of the things that keeps me wanting to work. I can't duck out yet; I feel I still have to represent.”
