Tavi Gevinson, Clinique Ambassador, Takes Refreshing Stance On Anti-Aging

When we first heard that Tavi Gevinson was the brand ambassador for a skincare campaign, we have to admit we were poised to hear her reel off some mis-judged "anti-aging" spiel.

At 19, it would seem ridiculous for Gevinson to be spouting anti-aging rhetoric, but we were pleasantly surprised to find Gevinson has taken a different approach.

"I'm more worried about anti-aging than I am about aging," she said in an interview with Fashionista.com.

A photo posted by Tavi Gevinson (@tavitulle) on

"I don’t really want to be someone who — and I know it's easy to say when you're younger and older women tell me I'll feel differently — but I just really don’t want to be someone who's afraid of aging because you can’t do anything about it unless you die. So you’re fighting a losing battle.

"I feel like I’ve seen enough cake faces in real life. I have seen [certain celebrities'] faces in the flesh, and it's not flesh.

"I'm more scared of becoming that than being like, 'Hello, yes, I am an older person so I have wrinkles.'"

Gevinson has signed up as the brand ambassador for Clinique's new #FaceForward campaign, which is aimed at "millennials". She says she was first introduced to the brand while on a photo shoot a couple of years ago.

"The makeup artist said 'you need this!' in reference to the yellow lotion, [Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+]," she said.

"Then I learned it’s sort of iconic and it’s now a staple in my skin care regimen."

Victoria's Secret Model Workout: What Happens When You Follow Their Fitness Plans

$

While they might not break a sweat on the catwalk, Victoria's Secret models are known for giving it their all in the gym.

Whereas I haven't set foot in one in two years...

Although I do exercise each week to avoid some sort of pizza related early death, it's mainly haphazardly and sporadically using random YouTube videos (the modern day version of the Cindy Crawford work out VHS) in the comfort of my own home.

While looking good isn't the sole purpose of my job (or any of it, really), there's no denying the physical benefits of a good workout and the VS models' happy, sheeny fitness selfies convinced me to give it a go, at least to rev up my flagging energy levels.

This is what happened when I spent a week following the fitness routine of an Angel...

Always a good idea to stretch it out. @victoriassecretsport

The Workout: Ballet Beautiful

Where: From home on your laptop (yaaaaaas) - balletbeautiful.com, £25 per month.

Angel Fans: Candice, Erin, Lily

Mary Helen Bowers, the ballerina who trained Natalie Portman for her role in Black Swan, is one of the most sought-after teachers in New York.

Celebs, Victoria's Secret models and fitness fanatics alike all flock to her classes - and now everyone else can too thanks to her personalised workout streaming service.

After signing up I was greeted with a custom week-long work out plan consisting of five mini routines. It's quite different to normal ballet (which admittedly I haven't done in 10 years), with a focus on repeating specific moves to tone the whole body.

I found it a fun and easy way to make sure I packed in some daily exercise, and the different work outs each day meant I didn't get bored.

You can sign in anywhere on your laptop or mobile anytime you have a spare few minutes, so it's easy to fit into a hectic schedule.

The Workout: Boxing

Where: Frame, Shoreditch - moveyourframe.com, £11 per 45 minute session

Angel Fans: Adriana, Alessandra, Doutzen

If you told me two weeks ago I'd actually be enjoying a boxing class I would have laughed you off the face of the planet.

Luckily, easing my fears as I entered, the instructor confirmed there would be no actual sparring, broken noses or untimely deaths - just lots of high energy boxing combos choreographed to fast-paced music.

This is cardio at it's finest - sweaty and exhausting, but builds stamina in the way only cardio can, along with releasing all those brilliant post-workout endorphins.

The Workout: Pilates

Where: Frame, Shoreditch - moveyourframe.com, £20 per session.

Angel Fans: Elsa, Behati, Karlie

A step up from regular old pilates, Frame's Reformer class uses a series of springs and pulleys to add resistance - a top trick used by Victoria's Secret models to create their long, lean muscles and strong cores.

Having never used the resistance equipment before, I opted for the Beginner Reformer class, which runs at a slower pace with more emphasis on explaining correct alignment and technique, (which I definitely needed).

The pulleys may look like a torture tool but the hour-long workout was an absolute blast. It's tough, but fun and most definitely worth a go - I swear I felt an inch taller after the first session.

The Workout: Train Like An Angel

Where: A free YouTube workout

Angel Fans: Alessandra, Erin, Candice

Another home workout led by supermodel personal trainer Justin Gelband and Ballet Beautiful’s Mary Helen Bowers - the perfect way to try out her classes for free.

The Angels demonstrate the moves and a note pops up on screen advising how many reps of each exercise to do, which ends up being slightly annoying as you have to keep stopping and starting the video... but it's free so you can't really complain.

These are so quick and simple to add in to your daily workout routine, although I definitely had to add quite a few videos together to feel like I was getting a proper session.

But believe me, once you get into it you can really feel the burn - as Ale says in the video, "When it burns, it's good. You know what it means - it's working!"

Green juices (and cashew milk) from @radiancecleanse

A photo posted by Rosy Cherrington (@rosycherrington) on

Green juices and cashew milk from radiancecleanse.com

To help me through my week of work outs, and make sure I was getting the nutrition I needed, I looked to the Angel's diets for inspiration.

I obviously wasn't going to follow Adriana Lima's infamous pre-show nine-day liquid only diet or subsist on a ration of Karlie's Kookies, but after scouring through countless interviews the only constant in the Angels' diet plans was a focus on clean eating.

That meant lots of fresh fruit, veggies and lean proteins. And it wouldn't be a Victoria's Secret week without a hefty serving of green juices - I added a few organic, cold-pressed servings each day from juice company Radiance.

I will admit, somehow a Nandos found its way into my saintly Angel diet... but that's ok because it's totally Jourdan Dunn endorsed.

The Verdict

At the start of this challenge I was skeptical that just seven days would be enough to make a big difference in how I felt and looked, but I've been surprised at how fast my body reacted to some serious training.

Not only am I waking up feeling fresher in the mornings and sitting up straighter at work, my skin's looking clearer than ever and there's a visible difference in my muscle tone - meaning, I actually have some now.

I can't see myself following the vigorous daily two-hour work outs the Angels complete in the run up to their annual fashion show, but I'll definitely be incorporating their fitness tricks into my regular routine (because life's too short to not eat pizza).

This July we're running a Fitspiration campaign, where we're championing fitness as a positive addition to life rather than always being about weight loss. From inspirational interviews to easy-to-follow exercise tips, we hope to inspire everyone to get out there and have fun. Trust us, your body will thank you for it. Here Are The Stunning Results Of Kickstarter-Funded Body Awareness Campaign 'Curves' By Victoria Janashvili

What does a great bottom look like? It's both Kylie Minogue and Serena Williams; it's also Tess Munster and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini.

Here to celebrate the variety of great bottoms, or 'booty' as is the preference of photographer Victoria Janashvili is her body awareness project Curves, which was funded on Kickstarter.

"We love women’s bodies, whether they are skinny, full, flat, athletic, old, young, black, brown, white….but not everybody does... Because not everybody knows how beautiful bodies truly are," she wrote on the funding page.

"Media still usually sets the standards of beauty at a smaller woman, making women, beautiful, healthy women—with curves, and boobs, and hips, and, yes, booties — feel an unjust pressure."

curves

Janashvili raised $40,000 to complete the project, indicating that it was a subject that resonated with a lot of people.

We caught up with the photographer to find out more.

What was the inspiration behind the book?

I've shot a lot of body image awareness campaigns in the past and a lot of times people used the images to promote slogans that I didn't agree with - like bigger is better, or skinny is better or whatever they could. So for a while I was thinking of a good response - so this book was perfect. It's 70 women who look completely different but are similarly beautiful to me. The book features their nude or semi nude photographs and their stories on finding confidence and self love.

Were you surprised by the support your idea gained on Kickstarter?

Yes. When we ran the Kickstarter I didn't have any expectation of how it would turn out. I thought that the project was for people to judge - if they liked it, they would fund it. But the people didn't just fund the project - they also encouraged me in every way possible to keep going with it.

Story continues below the slideshow:

What do you think about the current representation of women's bodies in the media?

I think that media is definitely changing in a positive way. But most of the times the women you would see in media are Caucasian, young and very thin - which by itself is perfectly fine. But it would be good to have a lot more diversity.

Is body image a topic that is personal to you in any way?

Of course! I am a woman and I have a body so that topic is very relevant to me as well as it is to anybody. I myself also got nude for the book and shared a story about my deepest insecurities and that was definitely very hard.

The photos will appear in an art photography book.

Emily MacDonagh Marries Peter Andre In a Sassi Holford Wedding Dress

Emily MacDonagh wore a custom-made wedding dress by Somerset-based designer Sassi Holford as she married Peter Andre on Saturday 11 July.

MacDonagh's long-sleeved French lace and ivory Italian silk gown was inspired by the Duchess of Cambridge's Sarah Burton designed McQueen wedding dress.

However, MacDonagh, 25, opted for a Bateau neckline rather than a V-neck as she says she's "not one for showing cleavage."

peter andre ok magazine

MacDonagh's dress was designed so it could be worn in many different ways - the sleeves are detachable and the neckline can be changed so that it sits off-the-shoulder, or strapless.

Andre, 42, met his bride as she came up the aisle wearing a black single-breasted DKNY suit.

Andre and MacDonagh brought their wedding date forward after Andre's father, who lives in Australia, fell ill and they were worried he wouldn't be well enough to fly over to attend the wedding if it took place next year.

The change of plans meant the MacDonagh only had six weeks to find her dream dress, but luckily she'd already started looking.

"I tried on a few dresses, as in my head I knew what I wanted, but after I tried them on I realised I wanted part of one and part of another so I got my dress custom -made," MacDonagh told OK! magazine.

She added that she chose Sassi Holford because as a West Country girl she liked the idea of wearing a dress made by a Taunton-based designer.

Prices for Sassi Holford's bridal couture gowns start from £1,200.

The ushers - Andre's brothers Chris, Danny, and Michael, as well as MacDonagh's brothers Tom, Sam, and Will, - all wore DKNY and Cerruti suits with Moss Bros shirts, ties waistcoats and pocket squares.

Standout pieces include a floral silk culottes jumpsuit and a button up denim pinafore dress, and everything in the range costs between between £12 to £65.

It has previously collaborated with ‘Reclaim to Wear’, the company launched by the founders of From Somewhere, a label that works to tackle the problem of textile waste.

Why Serena Williams' Eyebrow Shaping Video Deserves A Second Watch

$

When a celebrity shares a photo while having a beauty treatment we will often cover it on HuffPost UK Style as we love getting a glimpse into the beauty routines of the rich and famous.

However, when Serena Williams uploaded an Instagram video showing her getting her eyebrows shaped we avoided covering it as a news story because... well, to put it bluntly... it made us feel uncomfortable.

It wasn't the close up of the beautician wielding the scissors so close to Serena's face that made us squirm, it was what she had written in the caption:

"Lol finally getting them shaped! Hahahha #haters I love you!!! Hahah but I still like them all natural! But for now you win lol"

The #haters she refers to took to Twitter in their droves to comment on all aspects of Serena's appearance following her Wimbledon matches.

Now I want to point out that I don't think there is anything wrong with Serena Williams getting her eyebrows shaped - as Beyoncé would say, she's a grown woman, she can do whatever she wants.

Nor is there anything wrong with Serena choosing to share a photo of the experience, nor sharing the fact that Twitter trolls' spiteful comments have affected her.

What unsettled me was Serena's admission that her #haters have "won".

They have beaten her - something that no woman at Wimbledon was able to do.

The Instagram post should make Serena's Twitter haters feel ashamed, as it is proof that they aren't just sending their hateful messages out into the abyss - they have a very real, and very human, recipient.

But I have a sinking suspicion that many of those trolls will be gloating and relishing their power to chip away at a champion athlete's confidence.

Sadly, the Twitter vitriol against Serena in the face of her success is not unusual.

Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington has previously spoken about how she had a nose job after being bombarded with abuse on Twitter, while world champion gymnast Beth Tweddle was subjected to a stream of tweets slating her appearance while competing in the Olympics.

Serena's video is the latest in a long line of high profile evidence of the effect trolling can have and that is why it deserves a second watch:

To remind ourselves that even after a colossal accomplishment our self-confidence is fragile and we all have a responsibility to each other to think before we tweet.

Jazz Jennings has described the powerful impact fashion has had on her life - enabling her to reflect what she was feeling on the inside, on the outside.

The 14-year-old, who was assigned male at birth, said wearing a sparkly one-piece swimming costume on her 5th birthday was a "huge turning point" for her.

Speaking to Mashable, she said: "I definitely feel that society sets expectations for transgender people to fit in and makes us feel as if we have to dress a certain way so that we blend in with everyone else.

"But I believe all transgender individuals should be able to wear whatever they want and not worry about fitting in."

Jennings said she always "knew she was a girl" and the way she expressed this was through fashion.

In the interview Jennings, who is dressed in white strappy wedges, black skinny jeans and a lacey, off-the-shoulder cream top, goes on to say as long as people in the transgender community are happy and expressing their true self - it doesn't matter what they wear.

The transgender activist was named one of TIME Magazine's Top 25 Most Influential Teens for 2014 and more recently, became the face of a Clean & Clear campaign.

Jennings also wrote a book of the same name - I am Jazz - last year, which was one of the first books featuring transgender people to be geared toward children.

In an interview with Yahoo News, Jennings said: "I wanted to write this book so I could help other kids who are really struggling to find out who they are. It's not geared towards just LGBTQ kids, but kids of any difference of any type."

Inspirational Model Winnie Harlow With Vitiligo On How She Overcame Bullying After Someone 'Mooed' At Her

Model Winnie Harlow has made great strides in challenging the fashion industry's ideas about beauty, but she recently revealed her vitiligo saw her bullied while growing up.

As a contestant on America's Next Top Model, she was praised by Tyra Banks for her "symmetrical fantasticness", but writing in Cosmo, she discussed the cruel taunts she received from other kids.

Harlow - also known as Chantelle Brown-Young, has the skin condition vitiligo, which means that the cells that produce the chemical melanin die or stop functioning, causing white patches to form on the skin.

She explained that children at school had been warned to stay away from her, "because they might catch my skin condition" - despite the fact that vitiligo is not contagious.

From the third grade, "it would define the way people treated me," Harlow wrote, describing the way that "kids called me a cow and mooed at me."

chantelle brown young

She went on to describe how the bullying changed from name-calling to physical violence:

One night at a basketball game, I sat by myself while a girl mooed at me. I turned around and rolled my eyes. She kept mooing, and I told her to stop. A group of older kids prodded her, saying, "You're gonna let her talk to you like that?" After the game, outside in the cold, she rushed toward me, shoving me.

People crowded around us. I didn't want to fight. With vitiligo, my skin is sensitive in extreme temperatures. To get out of the situation, I let her beat me up. The next day, she came at me again. This time, I snapped, defending myself extremely well. I never had to fight her again. But it was only the first of many similar incidents.

As the bullying continued, Harlow began to miss school, and was eventually recommended to move to another one. "It's crazy that I got ousted, when I was the one getting abused," she said.

But it was at this point that Harlow's life started to change - away from the bullies, she was able to perform better at school, and started to receive the encouragement that gave her the confidence to try and get noticed by Tyra Banks for America's Next Top Model. Which she did - and from there on, began to shake up the fashion industry's tired perceptions about what beauty looks like.

winnie harlow

Harlow has since led the way in bringing diversity to the fashion industry, having walked the runway at this year's Madrid and New York fashion weeks, as well as acting as a brand ambassador for Desigual and Diesel.

But the bullying she faced has inspired her to do good. Harlow says that she recently returned to her school, "where I once cried in the hallways" to talk to the students about being confident and supporting one another.

And instead of anger, Harlow has found understanding for her childhood bullies: "Looking back, I can see that the students who bullied me were just like me, trying to fit in."

Sam Smith wasn't exactly struggling in the talent department, but his latest announcement suggests there may be no end to what he's capable of.

The multi-award winning singer-songwriter Sam Smith has just announced that he will now be creating his own fashion line.

He shared the news via his Instagram page, revealing that he would be collaborating with the designers at Balenciaga.

Judging by the short video he released teasing fans about the news, it's going to be a chic and classy affair.

The singer will not only be modelling the collection, but creatively collaborating on its design, which Balenciaga named #balxsamsmith on Instagram.

Smith promised that his fans would get a glimpse of the Fall-Winter Collection soon, telling them to watch this space.

You’ll be able to see my full FW15 @balenciaga Men’s campaign VERY soon.. so happy xx #Balenciaga

The announcement suggests there will be no letting up in the whirlwind 2015 Smith has already been having. He has already cleaned up four Grammy Awards this year, as well as showing off a remarkable weight loss, which he credited to Amelia Freer's Eat Nourish Glow diet.

Smith was forced to have surgery on his throat earlier this year, leaving fans concerned that they wouldn't be able to hear his velvety tones for a while.

But alongside the exciting news of his collaboration with Balenciaga, he just announced on Instagram that "MY THROAT IS LOOKING BLOODY FANTASTIC."

Speaking about the collaboration Perry said:

A woman with Down's Syndrome who became a model after adopting a healthier lifestyle, is now beginning to make waves in the fashion industry.

Madeline Stuart, 18, shared her inspiring fitness journey on Instagram almost two months ago.

Now she's been chosen to front the national campaign for US handbag brand, EverMaya, and is well on her way to becoming something of an internet sensation.

Since day one, Stuart has been incredibly vocal about her condition on social media and has revealed how she won't let it stand in the way of her dreams of becoming a model.

Recently, she documented her weight loss story in a Facebook post where she described her fitness journey.

She wrote: "So 18 months ago I decided to turn my weight around and to concentrate on my health. This is the outcome."

Since adopting a fitness plan and healthier lifestyle to help her fulfil her dreams, Stuart has landed a succession of modelling gigs. But this is quite possibly the most exciting one yet.

Stuart continues to inspire her 46,000 Instagram followers with messages of positivity and inspiring images that promote her healthy lifestyle.

After joining forces with EverMaya, an accessories brand which specialises in quality-made handbags that are made in Guatemala using Mayan fabrics and traditional techniques, there's no telling where she might end up next.

President of EverMaya, Damian Graybelle, wrote: "Madeline Stuart is not a 'beautiful young woman with Down syndrome', rather she is beautiful – full stop."

"In every photo featuring Madeline, you see an expression of pure joy on her face," he said. "That joy is infectious, and you can’t help but walk away with a smile of your own as well."

The fact she's comfortable in her skin and has overcome personal obstacles, such as her weight, are also huge reasons why he chose her to front the campaign.

And it's not the first time that Stuart has landed a major modelling gig.

Earlier this month she starred in a fitness campaign with Manifesta which prides itself on being a "feel-good" brand that has a unique and "non-shaming" approach to sizing.

We can't wait to see what she does next.

On the DAMNsel website, designer Rachel Feinberg explains how an encounter with 'manspreading' inspired her to create these attention grabbing bags.

One morning while commuting on the New York Metro, Feinberg sat down with her legs crossed and three bags piled on her lap.

She took out the book she was reading: Politics of Reality: Oppression by Marilyn Frye, and was struck by a line that read:

"Consider, by comparison, the discipline of women’s cramped physical postures and attenuated stride.”

When Feinberg glanced around the train she noticed that every woman in her train carriage, herself included, was sat with their bag on their lap and their legs either crossed or tightly closed, while the majority of men sat with their legs relaxed and "extended in all directions".

"We [women] have been instructed to not be as carefree as men," Feinberg told Refinery29.

"We don’t have that luxury, and I don’t understand why.

"Are women’s body parts more offensive? Even more so than a penis? This doesn’t make sense to me."

She added that the thought process behind the DAMNsel purses was that they would allow women to: "still sit with their legs crossed, and still remain conservative and 'classy’ if they chose, yet if a DAMNsel purse is held on their lap, it reminds the world that we are still advocating for social change, and women should have the opportunity to be as open as men."

Feinberg's bags have now found some high profile fans, including Beyoncé, transgender model Andreja Pejic, Pussy Riot and model Elliott Sailors.

Drag Kings: Style Icons Are Ripping Up The Underground Scene In The UK

Drag is about drawing attention to the public performance of gender and being a drag king is no different.

Essentially, to be a drag king you have to be someone who identifies as a female and performs as a male, although many people who define across the gender spectrum also partake in the performance.

Though not exclusive, the scene usually sits within the LGBT community. Exploring gender fluidity on a public stage can traced back to as early as the 1800s.

Adam All runs a drag king event in London

London's drag king Adam All spoke to the Huffington Post UK and said: "Being involved in drag as an art form, developing my character, performing as a drag king, has all become far more than a hobby, and now far more than a legitimate income; it is an obsession, a way of life,

"The drag king scene has always been pretty underground but over the last few years we have seen the emergence of groups and club nights that are helping to broaden the understanding and accessibility of this art form. I'm really proud to have been an active part of that and I hope that the steady growth of the scene continues."

The Transformation

It takes a lot of make-up and serious dedication to be transformed into a drag king.

Lots of performers strap or bind their chest to give themselves a more convincing masculine figure and some even pencil on beards and facial hair.

The clothing worn is usually for stage performance, so bright colours and over the top lavish designs are commonplace.

Some drag kings prefer to dress up as famous icons such as Freddie Mercury in the examples below:

Adam also spoke about the venues that currently run nightly events: "The scene continues to grow as it has been with the'Kings' bar in Blackpool, 'Boi Zone' on Canal Street, Manchester, 'FMAS' and 'BarWotever' at the RVT, The Admiral Duncan and The Marlborough's King of the Fringe.

He currently runs a successful monthly event named BOi BOX in London.
